Seen routines like this before, the principles are good as it makes it a nightmare to man-mark - however if it doesn't work it looks silly so I think I'd have a hard time convincing coaches to use it! I think corner routines like this: https://streamable.com/s18ynt are really undervalued and have a hard time trying to get teams to use them as if it's intercepted it "looks wasteful" even if it's the same result as sticking the ball into the mixer and losing it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Come on Reids give the club a few freebees as we need to improve our set pieces because we actually get so many corners but totally waste most of them.

Well now's a good time to announce - I was offered a full-time job at Watford for next season! I say was as I've turned it down to become Head of Set-Pieces at Spezia, SonderjyskE and Casa Pia instead. Crazy to think 7/8 years ago I decided that with no qualifications, contacts or anything that I was gonna try and get a job in football and now after a long journey, I've finally done it, it's a ******* great feeling lads

Well done Reids, but surely as your new employers are not even in this country you could slip the team you support a few freebees ;)

10-3 is a really strange scoreline (unless it’s in rugger).

I'm interested to know the origins of their name.
'Home of Pia' who lives over the way.
    I shall investigate.

It's named after a charity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Pia - who were also convicted of a child abuse scandal in the 90s and 2000s - I would've changed the teams name after that as if you google the team the first few pages are about nonces which isn't a good look!

I'm a big fan of the delivery being chipped (like that most recent video above) for that very reason, it's much easier to get an accurate delivery if you chip the ball rather than a inswing/outswing. Very often you can win the ball towards the back of the 6-yard area, which combined with the chipped delivery means you'll be a threat from second balls.

I can see that, but on the other hand surely a ball hit with pace, potentially with added swerve and dip, is harder to defend. In the end it depends on having someone who is expert at taking corners and free kicks, which Watford sadly haven’t had for ages.

  14. reids

    reids First Team

Yeah definitely, it also depends on the opposition a lot, when teams are fully zonal (which leaves players unmarked) then chipping the ball is very effective but you lose that edge if they're primarily man-marking and might be better off with it being hit at pace - although if your delivery is bad and you're constantly hitting the first man then looking at alternative methods of delivery is usually what I recommend!

Not if it doesn't get more than 5 feet off the ground. I've always been one for aiming for an area of the box. If you get runners meeting the ball you will generate the power required. Against Forest on Saturday I think Sema took 5-6 corners, none of which made it past the first man. Never going to score like that. If you look back to the first game of the season, the corner, although played short originally, was then crossed in to an area between the pen spot and six yard box which gives you the whole goal to aim at

Interesting - was it a financial decision to turn Watford down or more about the way of working? I would have thought a Championship team would offer more money than the other three clubs?

Oh, and congratulations of course! This is one of the best threads on the forum.

Mostly financial but slightly about the role. Backroom staff don't tend to earn much and Watford offered me the going rate, however my new role absolutely blows that out the water by a significant amount (we're talking almost triple an analysts salary!). Plus with the role of Head of Set-Pieces it puts me at the absolute top of my field (compared to just set-piece analyst), which means if my contract isn't renewed at the end of the 2 years it should hopefully set me up nicely going forward.

    Great work @reids
Do you just work on the attacking side of set pieces or do you the defensive side as well?

Fun fact, they tried to hire me the other day as well but I had to turn them down!

I do both, but it's much easier to have an impact on the offensive side, I'm not likely going to be able to persuade the manager to change defensive set-up to nullify a particular threat (say for Cardiff for example) so it becomes more about trying to provide as much info as possible on what the opponent is likely to do which they can then pass to the players instead.

A good coach would look at your plan and of course listen to his other coaches and take some if not all the plan and implement it his/her own way.

When I done my coaching courses I had to make a portfolio of all my sessions. The guys marking me looked at everyone’s portfolios, not to see if we’d done the work but to see if there was any stand out ideas.

I was on a course with a guy who was based out in Germany he got to carry out his sessions with Dortmund’s academy. The Germans watched helped and if he had that special something I’m sure they’d of tried keeping hold of him. In his case he couldn’t stay as he was in the army, not sure if they ever offered him anything.

The way I see it is coaching ain’t a secret we should be open and share ideas. Just the better ones maybe modify sessions and plans their own way.

Do you or have you tried to get involved in the women’s game Reid’s. ?

Well I'm quite bowled over by this, actually quite emotional!

Absolute congratulations Reids and I hope your success is an example to some of the losers on here who always look for the downsides, the negatives and excuses. You've achieved this in a few years through brexit, through the pandemic and everything else thrown at you. Well done!

Still some way to though. Make a name for yourself in Italy and you may get a full time "Head" role in the Prem with the mighty Horns!

I fully agree, sadly that's the way it is in football - managers just do not want to change the way they defend corners from game to game for fear of confusing players. Personally I think this is wrong as clubs will often change the way they defend corners if a manager is replaced (as the new manager will have his own preferred setup) - if they can do that successfully it should surely be possible to make slight modifications to the defensive setup each week to cater for the opposition. That's something I'm gonna try and work on and change!

As for the womens game, I'll admit I didn't try too hard to break into that side of the game as a majority of clubs don't have the money for a full time analyst, let alone a set-piece analyst! I did get invited to spend the day with Man City Women a couple of years ago though which was a great experience, they're all (mens, women + academy) based out the same training facility so the facilities were incredible. Had breakfast at the canteen to start, then sat in a cinema like room whilst the coaching staff went over the analysis of their next opponents with the players whilst they explained what they'll be doing in training and how that links to the analysis. Then went out and watched training for a bit before then going to the analysis suite and watching them train from there. Lunch and then I did a pitch to them, was a great day despite not leading to a job!

Yeah I've got a bunch of cool people following me: first team assistants at Chelsea + Arsenal, the future assistant manager at Borussia Dortmund (he's joining in the summer!), Danny Cowley, the heads of analysis at Man Utd and Leicester both follow me and messaged me privately congratulating me as well, it's all quite surreal haha

Last month was almost horrid, xG was doing great which means my teams were creating chances but not sticking them away (I mean technically not my fault as I can't score for the players!) and then a run of goals later in the month balanced things out and my teams ended up with 4 goals from 116 corners taken (3.45% conversion rate) although xG was 5.73.

This months the same without the goals, 1 goal from 106 corners taken (0.94%) but xG is at 3.7. Overall my teams have scored 24 goals from 654 corners (3.67%) although xG is at 29.39. Would be an insanely good season if they matched their xG across the season or even the month, however with 2 games left of the month it'll have to be some weekend to balance out the xG for the month!

Oddly Brentford didn't even offer me an interview, whilst I thought I stood a good chance of getting the job (especially since they rang me to discuss the role after I applied), I was stunned that I wasn't even offered an interview considering my experience in the field and with their ex head of set-pieces vouching for me!). But ah well, instead of reporting to the Head of Set-Pieces, I am the Head of Set-Pieces so I'm not too bothered :D

What did you make of Watford’s unusual corner routine in around the 23rd minute today @reids? Not sure I’ve ever seen all the attacking team line up that way before.

It can be useful - it makes the opposition uncomfortable as it's not something they'll have encountered too often (if at all!) which of course is a bonus. A German team did it a couple of months ago which is when I first saw it (and probably where our first team staff took it from)

    https://twitter.com/C_Carpenter14/status/1358444203018174465?s=20

Derby then did it the next month but starting from the other side of the 6-yard area which I prefer - it provides a much more natural angle for attacking the ball and really throws the defence off as they have to make a choice whether to have their back to the ball or the player, which instantly puts the defence at a disadvantage
