Tbf I don't really have space for any new teams as it is, unless they only want attacking analysis which doesn't take too long (I think i'm gonna try and switch some teams over to this next season as looking at my unconfirmed client list for next season I'm gonna be very very busy)

January has sprung a bit of a goal drought with just 1 goal from 62 corners taken so far (1.61% conversion rate), overall still on good numbers for the season but still chasing goal #20!

Still a bit of football to be played this month mate.

What is "par" for goals scored from corners ?

  6. reids

    reids First Team

3% conversion rate is usually what's described as the average but it varies a bit from year to year and league to league!

  7. Davy Crockett

    Ok
So , and stating the obvious here !, the key is to get the conversion rate above 3% and
    the conceding rate below ?

That's the idea! Although it's much harder to influence what happens defensively (as most managers tend to have a set way they like to defend and aren't likely to change) so just have to provide as much information as possible and hope for the best haha.

    Maybe.

A good point, I think next Friday could be crucial, a winnable (albeit tough) game against Fiorentina whilst the 2 teams directly below Spezia are playing each other, a win for Spezia whilst the other 2 draw would be perfect.

It's interesting how many US private equity firms and other investment vehicles are getting into football club ownership. I've always thought that there's no profitability in owning a football club and that it's more about wealthy individuals buying fun assets for personal pleasure or states using football to cleanse their own reputations. Clearly a lot of financial types have crunched the numbers and disagree.

If you do it badly then it's a huge money sink, if you do it right and have the right targets and objectives in place then you can definitely earn a lot of money from it. I saw earlier today that Benfica have made $500m profit from transfer sales in the last decade which is incredible. Red Bull have a great model of moving players through their club network before ultimately being sold that City are now trying to emulate (but with more money). It's definitely not easy, but is definitely doable!

  17. LeedsOrn

Maybe. Benfica are not a great example for PE firms to replicate elsewhere because they obviously have a conveyer belt of talent from a wide catchment area which they can sell while blooding more and remaining competitive in the league. Surely there are only a handful of clubs in Europe who are similarly positioned (Ajax come to mind off the top of my head). Red Bull are really smart, maybe that's more replicable.

But there seems to be a lot more money and less risk (though less fun too) in football club financing - as Michael Dell, Macquarie, 23 Capital and others (and inadvertently Elliott Management) have found.

Incidentally the investment group I'm working with are linked with the MSD Capital group backed by Dell, the guy who's in charge of MSD Capital is now a billionaire in his own right (Robert Platek) and has cut up his own slice of the football pie. They haven't told me as much but I think MSDs plan is to wait for one of the clubs they're lending money to default so they can get a club for free.

That’s what Elliott did with Milan - not sure it was intentional though. Not free though if you’re writing off hundreds off millions of debt owed to you though.

What sort of role do you have with the investment group? Set piece analyst or something broader? Either way good for you, but I’m impressed that an investment group has had the foresight to employ you and, if as a set piece analyst, the foresight to hire a set piece analyst.

Yeah, I think it's more likely to be the smaller clubs (so less debt) that are likely to default. I read earlier that Sunderland have their stadium and training ground up as as collateral so I'd imagine them and Derby (who are also in a perilous financial position) that have borrowed a good chunk of money from MSD that are the main clubs that it would be possible to take over cheaply with a manageable amount of debt which can then be rebuilt into a valuable asset.

At the moment I only do corners for them (although I have an inkling they want to hire me full time to be in charge of all set-pieces at all their clubs) and it was that foresight that really sold me on the project, on the initial call with them they said they they had all the recruitment and data/staff etc all ready to go but they wanted to hire a specialist in an area that could provide a lot of value to the clubs to help give them that edge and they thought the lowest hanging fruit that could give them that edge was in set-pieces, luckily they were impressed with what I'd built so got the gig!

I think they have pretty big goals so imagine they'll be backing the project substantially (they're certainly paying me very well :D) which will certainly help - especially with the Portuguese team where budgets in the Segunda are low, so it technically shouldn't be too hard to get promoted next season (touch wood), Casa Pia finished bottom of the league with 11 points from 24 games last season before the season was declared null and void (saving them from relegation). The takeover went through a fortnight before the start of this season, with no manager and only 4 contracted players and yet now at the halfway stage we're 7th in the league (out of 18) which is pretty damn good in my opinion. So I imagine promotion will be the aim next season now the core of the team is built and all the processes sorted

That was a huge win and opens up a 9 point gap from Spezia to the relegation zone, a win on Friday and things are looking very good.

Goal number 20 just doesn't wanna come. Last month was horrible with only 1.67 xG and 1 goal from 85 corners taken (1.18% conversion rate), however the chance creation this month has been much better with 3.31 xG from 51 corners taken, however no goals have yet been scored, so annoying.

I’m not sure about that, but if it wasn’t for this forum, Reid’s would have taken a poorly paid full time position at Brentford and probably waiting for his P45 after today’s result!

We’re chances created with your tactics? Did they just fail to execute?
If so I’d say goals will come.
Did you see Napoli juventus highlights?
Juventus free kick on top corner of 18 yard box. Sets up as if crossing, squares it player 1 let’s it through legs player 2 takes a little heavy 1st touch gets shot away which tests keeper. Very much like Italy goal against England in Brazil WC where Pirlo steps over the ball leaving England flat footed chasing shadows. The Italy goal was open play if I remember. But very simple and effective

Reids now you have established yourself with a fair few clubs can you please try again to get WFC to take advantage of your services, that is if you have not done so already of course, because we really need to improve our set pieces more than ever if we are to have any hope of bouncing back to the PL.

Goal #20 finally came midweek for the Championship team and was quickly followed this weekend by goal #21 (also Championship team), goal #22 (Forest Green Rovers) and whilst not technically a corner goal, my well worked routine for Casa Pia lead to a penalty which was duly dispatched. Drought over :D

The well worked short corner routine that won us a penalty for handball, I tried this earlier on in the season with Groningen and it worked well there - resulting in a free cross as you can see below (even if the final ball was horrible - this was meant for the back-post!). Will definitely be using this in the future

Keeper went walkies big time there. Was that part of the strategy, to lure him out?

It wasn't! My analysis actually flagged that their goalkeepers rarely try to come and claim too far off their line - I guess that goal shows why that's the case haha

I love the fact that Reids has become some sort of renegade-for-hire set-piece ninja, trying out routines at one club and then using them at another with only us knowing he's doing it.

He's like some sort of movie bad guy, sitting in a big office chair laughing at the likes of Tom Cleverley hitting the first man for the 78th time whilst gently stroking his cat Almen saying, 'if only they'd listened to me Almen. If only.'

  33. reids

    reids First Team

Haha they all know I'm working for other clubs! It's actually part of what makes this so effective as I'm essentially having 5 seasons worth of work rolled into 1 - meaning that when a situation comes up (so for instance I flagged that Groningen's opponent was slow to react to short corners so suggested the routine above), I can test an idea out and then when I encounter that situation with another club later on in the season I can say that I've experienced this recently, we did this and it worked well and could be a good idea to try. Gives more credibility to it rather than just saying "I think we should do this", as I've already had experience of implementing it successfully (and getting the coaches to implement the recommendations is the hardest bit!) which means all the teams benefit from that shared knowledge and experience.
