According to Alan nixon of the sun we are interested in the former villa and wet spam holding midfielder. Wierd one as he is 35 and has been a free agent for a year

Free agent is all that matters. Is he past it, injured, one legged?.....doesn't matter. He's free. We can loan out Hughes then to Udinese.

Is he better than no one? Almost certainly. But this is hardly inspiring is it? Would be a bit like the Lazaar one.

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhh

    One Carlos Sanchez,
    he wears a Watford hat,
And when the Pozzo saw him for free
    He said I'm having that

Hasn't played for nearly a year
    and gets injured every game,
And when we win the Championship
    We'll never see him again

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh

Nixon is fairly reliable generally. I'm not keen on Sanchez but would you really rather we have no midfield cover than have him until the end of the season?

Ohh, now it makes perfect sense to have sent Quina out on loan to a far superior team “for minutes”.

The Quina loan is right up there with the Janmaat contract extension in terms of Pozzo ineptitude.

To be fair if Gosling gets injured on Wednesday night aho plays in the midfield 3, okay we have Phillip's but not sure he is ready. Sanchez is 35 and has been injured but he has 80 odd caps for Columbia and I guess he would do for back up.

It's a sign of our ineptitude that it's come to this, but we do need another midfielder

I wonder if they laugh as they release those sorts of statements or if it's after they see it's been accepted by the fans.

This signing just highlights so many things the club have done questionably IMO...

    • Letting Capoue go without knowing they could replace him... and now getting a 35yr old, who’s never done well in English football and is coming off the back of a huge injury.
    • Underfunding the academy to such an extent that Dan Phillips isn’t even seen as capable as emergency backup.
    • Hammering home the point that the words in the summer and Duxbury’s comments at the fan forum were bare-faced lies told to fans. Trusting in youth? What part of Gosling and Sanchez over Phillips and Quina says that?

If Phillips isn’t good enough, fair enough. But don’t sell Capoue just to be kind to the bloke if you can’t adequately replace him.

As it is, as a stand-alone signing for a few months, I don’t mind it. Back-up, experience - but it makes little sense when you see what’s come before it, that’s all. And I’ll despair if any deal goes beyond this season.

Phillips is a great example of the circle of life of a a Watford fan.

    Fan 1 - Phillips isn't good enough
Fan 2 - Stop writing him off before he's had a chance

    6 months later

Fan 1 - We just signed a 35 year old bloke who hasn't played a game for a year
Fan 2 - can't be any worse than Phillips

Badu seems to have major health problems - he was hospitalised with a pulmonary embolism last year so I think that’s a no go.

Why do you think Ledley would be better? He is also injury prone and old and hasn’t played much football lately and the football that he had was at a lower level than Sanchez (one appearance for Charlton and 6 for Newcastle Jets in the Australian league in the last two years).

    Taider is injured.

Imbula, Itarruspe, Sandro and Ramires along with Wellington might be viable and on the face of it would be better signings. But hard to tell if they’d get a work permit under the new system (whereas Sanchez is perhaps still settled in the U.K.) and it can be hard to figure out what the fitness status and wage expectations of players who haven’t played in so long would be. If it’s viable (in terms of cost, fitness and ability to work in the U.K.), I’d definitely rather have one of those though but who is to say it is.

Haven't seen Phillips play for the U23s recently, is he injured?

You’ve literally answered your own question.

A health problem Badu is better than Sánchez
A Joe Ledley who’s played 6 times for the real Newcastle, is better than Sánchez
An injured Taider, is better than Sánchez.

Anyone and everyone is better than Sánchez. He is the midfield version of Andre Gray. I hope to never see the day that they are on the same pitch together.

Edit: just seen your question only related to Ledley. Anyway, my points still stand.

What points? Is there a reason why you think Taider, who is unlikely to regain his fitness until the end of the season and would thus not be able to provide injury cover, or Ledley, released by relegated Charlton after one championship appearance last season would be better than Sanchez? Just saying that they would be better doesn’t constitute a substantive point.

This is not an exciting signing by any means. But it would provide short-term cover which is much needed. And there may well be better viable options out there. But there’s no reason to suggest these two are them.

For what it’s worth I’m open to the claim that Badu with his pulmonary embolism would be a better option. I would imagine the Pozzos have scoped him out given their close relationship with Badu, who has said he wants to be the Pozzo scout in Africa upon retirement.

I don't have a single memory of seeing Carlos Sanchez play football so I'm coming at this completely blind, but looking at his career, can he really be *that* bad, as cover?

He's spent the vast majority of his career in top leagues (PL, Ligue 1, Serie A, La Liga), and has made nearly 100 caps for a decent nation in Columbia.

There's a chance his injury has finished him off, have to wait and see. But a bit of experience may be useful in the big games coming up. If we have a couple of midfield injuries I wouldn't want to be throwing Dan Phillips in the deep end.

He’s truly woeful mate. You would honestly rather anyone other than Sánchez. Seriously.

Since his knee op, he's made 7 appearances for West Ham, although 6 from the bench. Ironically two of those games were against us when West Ham smashed us 4-1 and 3-1 in close succession at home. In total he's played for 136 minutes since returning from his knee op on 4th May 2019. Before that it looks like he was part of things for West Ham, playing regularly.

His last appearance was his only start and that was in a home defeat to Leicester. He played 62 minutes of that game which was 28th December 2019. Since then he's not played a competitive match. So around 15 months without a game.

Seems unlikely he'll get up to speed for what we need. Clearly the ACL has pretty much killed his career and at 35 I'm surprised he's not retired.

What's the most concerning is that this is another example of muddled thinking. Why send out a young dynamic player like Quina? He's can do the spectacular and scores goals out of the blue. This is exactly the type of player we need around the place. We're in the Championship. That's exactly the time to play him.

But what do we do......we send him to Granada so they can benefit from his goals. We need to be showing him he's wanted at Watford, but we do the exact opposite. He'll have to renew his contract in the summer, or else we have to sell. Seeing as he'll feel he's not part of things he'll go elsewhere.

So we leave ourselves short of midfield options. Who could have predicted someone would get suspended eh? What are the odds? So we now have to scramble around and look to sign someone who should be retired. Utter madness.

Guess he's holding on just in case there's someone foolish enough out there to offer him a new contract with no pay-as-you-play terms ? Can't see that happening.

I'm sure you're right but why do established top league clubs keep signing him, and a decent nation like Colombia kept playing him? They can't all be wrong, surely?
