It's amazing what can happen when you take off the brakes.

  2. Lucked into today buy accident, stood scowling through most of the game, and will change it back to 442 as soon as he gets the chance.

Sooner this clown is fired the better.

Well, given that it’s been confirmed post-game that Deeney was injured, didn’t warm-up and was never a candidate to come on, think it’s fair to suggest today wasn’t so much a lightbulb moment for Xisco - but more that he decided to try something different based on the fact he couldn’t do what he normally wants/is told to do.

I have no doubts in my mind that Deeney would have started today had he been fit. And that he will not be sidelined just because of today’s result. Bet he starts again, if not midweek, defo next weekend.

Just imagine how many we would have scored if the Chuckle brothers had started?

Perry Groves while summarising on Talk Sport’s commentary today:

“The problem Watford have is if it gets windy, it will put Will Hughes’s cigar out”.

I agree. One thing you shouldn’t do is change a winning team. Unless forced by injuries suspensions. So I hope he sticks

Yeah, I think the idea is he's so cool/louche/in control, that he's smoking a cigar whilst controlling the midfield/game?

Cleverley on Hive Live - 'it felt like I had five or six options every time I had the ball'. What a contrast to having to lump it in the vague direction of Deeney.

In the post match "Hive live", Chalobah and Cleverley said that they had a meeting after the Coventry game to have an open discussion about everyone's performances/behaviour. Emma said that Ben Foster brought it up in the preview, did anyone catch what they said?

Cleverley said that one of the things said was that they felt were being too critical of each other, so they suggested to get more involved in the game instead of criticising. I heard that as a political way of saying it was a clear the air meeting, despite what he said, but if it works then it works.

The Coventry game lots of them waving their arms about and pointing fingers. Today only saw encouragement. Which is probably the most positive thing to see overall today.

Ok, but then you did also say that Deeney has a better football brain, despite the fact that Perica has basically had two opportunities to display his awareness, which would therefore fall under that category, and in both done something Deeney is literally incapable of and scored in the process. In terms of legitimate goals that should have stood, even he has more from open play than Deeney, and they evidenced a part of his footballing brain Deeney just does not possess - either that, or steadfastly chooses to ignore 100% of the time.

I'm not saying that the one thing Deeney has isn't there - he does have some game intelligence, it's true, although it's rare he actually uses it effectively - the Stoke game was his classic 'one-in-ten' exhibition. I just don't particularly think we have much evidence either way to judge Perica as worse in that regard within the context of his own play.

Before today we’d played 10 league matches this season without either Deeney or Gray in the starting line up.

In those games we scored 11 times.

Ironically the first match this season where we started both up top together, we scored 4.

If ever there were stats that went against what most of us feel about what our best team is, it’s those!

He could have still played 4-4-2 with Gray and Pedro up front, Hughes on the wing and no Sema. And he gave recent/underused signings some useful game time, including Zinckernagel who scored a confidence-boosting goal to increase the goal difference which could be crucial.

Give him some credit, 17 points from 9 is a decent return and we're unlucky not to have one or two more if anything.

Teide, I didn’t hear Groves say it at the time I must confess. Didn’t listen to their commentary. But saw it on a Tweet by Ian Danter and thought people on here might enjoy it. He actually referred to mumbling of discontent by us WFC supporters and said he hoped we were happier with today’s one-way traffic!

If anything, we're lucky not to have fewer, in that we were lucky not to lose to Cov - they created every decent opportunity in that game, and were the only side at all deserving of it.

Hence why I said "one or two" - we were also unlucky not to win at Millwall which would have given us one more point even if we'd lost at Coventry.

  27. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

Why were we unlucky there, though? We huffed and puffed and couldn't put a single coherent offensive stage of play together -I don't recall many major opportunities we passed up, though it's possible I've just expunged it from my mind.

There was an 8-0 in the League Cup v Darlington in our relegation season of 1987/88, but I think this was the biggest league win since ‘82.

  31. Why would I give him credit? He's wasted weeks with a rancid 442 when the football being played in front of his eyes was screaming for change. Then we find out the team who played was only selected because he was forced into it. ******* clown.
