Good. I'll feel more confident of a win if so.

Look on the bright side - your analysis assumes he has some authority. That’s a big step forward for the patsy.

There’s a lot of people here talking about a player that wasn’t our player, who didn’t feature much, and made little difference when he did. (I guess it’s just that it’s a bit of solid news).

Hopefully we’ll sign someone who will be our player, will feature, and will make this Watford side a better team.

I look forward to catching up with you all on the Matty Vydra thread. X

I was not impressed by Garner throughout any game that I saw him play in this season. Looked very average and took some woeful set pieces. No loss at all and I would rather we developed our own youth players in the first team instead of someone elses.

Murray, Garner - these loan signings are working out well.

From what I saw he was average at best. If he had been able to take a decent set piece he would have played a lot more as this is an area we have nobody capable of doing regularly. Instead it was hitting the first man every time.

Stop sulking, play football better, save the NHS

I'm going to go slightly against the grain and say that there was a period, after he had a decent run of games, that he looked fairly decent. And that's on Hard Mode (ie in a side managed by Ivic).
I'm sure he'll make at least a good Championship midfielder in the future.
No loss for us though - as long as we get another centre mid in.

This is a good move. I wish him well but we don’t need. We’ve got Troy playing midfield now anyway ;)

    Just get a striker.

    I tend to agree.
I adopted my usual view of a new player, being very excited and desperately hoping they would be our saviour.
After a while this is worn away by the inevitable realisation that the player is not the new Mo Jo,Tony C etc.
It shows I suppose how difficult the transition is from youth to senior sport.

He had good and bad games for us just like the rest of them. Have no doubt he will have an excellent career ahead of him.

    Going to Forest.

Another defensive minded side so not sure he will do much better there as his defensive work was poor.

He was just a 6/10 player. No more, no less. Young enough to get better but playing for a club where he needs to be better quicker than most other clubs. Or else he will become another middle-of-the-road Championship player.

Didn’t help that he was designated as a set-piece taker and wasn’t very good at them, and for a club that has been terrible at set-pieces for years. Think that detracted from the occasional good work he did otherwise. I desperately hoped he was a link-player between CM and the striker(s) and could carry the ball between those lines - but he was just another sideways short-pass merchant who was no great shakes at tackling. He’ll need to do more than that to have the career that’s being talked up for him.

As I said, it’s no great loss if 1-2 more come through the door.

It may be "mutual consent" in the politique sense that we don't want to p155 ManUre off for any future potential loans. Better to say that than "those basta5ds at Man U have recalled him unilaterally".

I wonder who at our club even thought he'd be good enough for a side chasing promotion to begin with, and whether they'd even watched him play before or just went off reputation. In the summer I watched him even look anonymous against Huddersfield reserves in a friendly. There are/were some crap decision makers at the club.

Pretty low risk signing in the scheme of things though. Many, many bad picks by Giraldi but this one was arguably a harmless punt with few downsides.

I think he just didnt fit with our needs. Would have been OK as back up but I'm sure that Man U had made it clear he had to be getting games, which can't now promise.
He reminds me of a young R Johnson but without the natural grit, he took a few seasons to come good.
I think the club know what type of midfielder we need right now so best we get the right type in.?

Absolutely imperative we get another body in. Quina injured for a while and can't really be relied on anyway, Dele-Basiru out long term. We desperately need a more physically imposing presence in our midfield.

What you want as a championship club loaning a PL player is someone who looks a cut above your own players, like when we had Adam Johnson, or Cleverley first time around. In the most part Garner looked worse than the players we actually own, so was therefore an entirely pointless loan.

  24. Sort of OK

Thought he did OK for a young lad getting his first run of games with the grown ups. Didn't shine but not convinced he was worse than the others, given it was Ivic time as well.

Tend to agree with some of the above though that given our ambitions he maybe isn't the man in a two and would and should find opportunities limited.

Don't think he is the next Carrick but good luck to him for the future.

    Yes.
But he hit the bar with a direct free kick and put in a couple of good corners early on.... and then it was down-hill from then on. Lacked ability to read the game, cojones, tackling skills and ball-control even by Championship standards. I suspect he is badly in need of really good coaching. I strongly suspect Watford FC is a club where coaching just isn't set up like that.
I also wonder if there is a fair bit of inter-club politics that goes on. Manure have a lot of promising young players and a lot of Champ clubs must be eyeing them up. Maybe Watford have tried to keep in with Manure by warning them early that would be a change of opportunities for him. Or maybe Man U just thought the coaching wasn't good enough. Or maybe the lad has high expectations of his worth and asked for a move. We won't know.
But, whatever, he wasn't good enough for us.
I'm distinctly underwhelmed by the Gosling signing, but at least he'll have more Championship savvy than Garner.

I thought Garner showed his immaturity when he throw his toys out of the pram when he didn’t get on v Stoke, I know he is young but obviously thinks he is better than he actually is at this time!

I think he got a bit of a rough ride over that personally. The lad is only 19, is very likely away from home for the first time in his life and did so with the plan to play lots of football. Was stripped and ready but was (correctly) told to sit back down given Stoke had just scored. I’d be disappointed if a seasoned, experienced pro reacted the way he did - but given his age, I think he just wanted to play and had the carrot dangled in front of him, I found his reaction understandable to be honest. Not sure it had anything to do with him believing he’s better than he is. I think most people would be annoyed if put in his shoes at that moment.

Garner was apparently MOTM in Forest’s first match, even though he had hardly trained with them.

As I said before, he would be great if he has a decent option to pick out over the top/ in the channels, but doesn’t suit our static forward line.

Not surprised really - will be easier for him with less expectation and he will likely stand out in a side a bit further down the table. Seemed like his current level right now.

Much as I dislike Manure we have had a good relationship in the past in sourcing loanees. And some have been decent enough. This saga however which is more mismanagement from the hierarchy sours yet another relationship. Soon no one will want to do any business with us unless it is those lurking in the shade.

Blackburn have done really well in terms of their loans. Branthwaite and Elliot and now securing Harwood-Bellis. As usual everything that our chumps have touched has turned to dust.

In hindsight I think that Garner / Murray loan stays have been mired by the mess with our squad.
Not saying they were great signings but I guarantee you they will move on and do a good job somewhere.
One of our big problems over the last 2 years is our total lack of playing identity or style. Most average teams even know what's expected, whether it be sitting back most of game or lumping it up to a couple of giants.
I honestly can't say what our key strategy is right now as a team, so what chance does a loanee have..?

A snippet here from Solskjaer on why he was recalled, quote from the Manchester Evening News. Nothing to do with playing time it would seem.

Garner joined Watford in the summer but his loan spell was cut short in January with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explaining the appointment of Xisco Munoz led to United believing his development would be better served elsewhere.

He said: "Jimmy has played quite a bit lately, but when the new manager came in we felt and they felt that it was right for him to find somewhere else."
