Gosling and Dyer have had similar careers and similar age too, or must it be position based? Suppose that makes Jephcott similar to Danny Ings then who Burnley signed in the Championship when he was doing well in L1 so I'm happy either way. Similar career progression and all that.
At least we can look forward to him sitting on Hive Live in very tight shirts burbling nonsense platitudes 10 years from now, then.
Jephcott is not on the same level as Toney. If we paid Toney-money for him we'd be utterly bonkers. He could be worth a punt for half of what Toney cost.
Got to factor in the added value of being able to say we're 'ephing and jephing' every time he plays, if he comes in.
And that he is. Hasn’t scored a single goal outside of the penalty area this season. Some have been inside the 6 yard box, which Gray can’t do. However most of his goals have been between the 6 yard box and 18 yard line, which Gray definitely can’t do.
All signings are a gamble, even with proven-quality players. Signing the 21-year-old League 1 top scorer seems like a reasonable one to take, given our current situation.
Obviously there aren't many, or even any, about for that kind of money, which is why we should have just stretched for Ivan and sorted the issue completely for a few years. The closest I can think of, who I have posted about in the transfer suggestions thread, are Kevin Nisbet at Hibs and Ercan Kara at Rapid Wien. Nisbet would probably be a bigger risk than Jephcott as the SPL may be even worse than League One and he also misses as many as he scores, but I reckon his ceiling is higher. I'm not sure he'd work that well with Deeney, but could link up well with JP. Birmingham currently seem to be trying to sign either Nisbet or Cosgrove and have made offers in the region of £2mil-£3mil for both. http://wfcforums.com/index.php?threads/transfer-suggestions.54511/page-74#post-2937563 Ercan Kara at Rapid Wien from what I've seen def has PL potential, but might cost more like £3mil-£4mil. http://wfcforums.com/index.php?threads/transfer-suggestions.54511/page-78#post-2945523 Junker from Bodo/Glimt has also been suggested on here, though it would be too late to get him a work permit for this season, and while the jury is still out on Zinc it seems unclear if he'd also have the required impact.
No one is suggesting we pay 1p million for him. He has scored 14 league goals in 18 appearances and has only just turned 21 though.
Scoring goals is a strikers main purpose. I couldn't care less if he was the worst footballer on the planet as long as he can stick away the chances from 6-12 yards out ! That's exactly what we need. Typical Watford fans writing a young lad off before he's even kicked a ball for us. Sent from my CLT-L09 using Tapatalk
You literally started a thread based on the fact that we were linked with 'dross' players who you'd written off before they'd ever kicked a ball for us.
I'm not actually commenting on the likelihood of his success either way, but regardless, you can't say someone's being 'written off before they've even kicked a ball for us' before he's actually signed for us. As it stands, he's just a football player being assessed as football player. We're not even near the stage of starting up the kind of empty-headed, meaningless 'let's get behind the lad now he's here/give him all our support' witterings at this stage - that is still some way down the line. If you're desperate for that, head over to the Gosling thread.
Fully expect this lad to be a decent Championship striker at this stage in his career if nothing more, but would he need to be? We're already in with a shout of the automatics with 2 goals from open play from Deeney and Gray, a solid 5/6 goal haul from now until the end of the season could be more than useful if our defence stays solid
So he just scores goals? Hope he dates pop stars and holds good parties otherwise I can’t see a clear strategy here. This is a panic buy and I can’t see it working out. We need a Gray replacement, and this guy sounds completely different.
I disagree I think Jephcott has shown that he has potential he has 14 goals from 18 appearances in the league this season at just 20 years old. Toney's all round game may be better but Jephcott is still on the way to scoring as much goals as Toney did and it is a goalscorer that we need.
When we currently have Gray up front, I'm surprised there's anyone even questioning this. Will Hoskins in whatever condition he's in nowadays would be better
Have you seen him on Hornets Hive? An absolute hunk of a man. Scored 2 in 5 for Kings Langley and rarely goes to sleep alone.
True we all know it is probably not true and we will be left with Gray missing open goals from the remainder of the season.
My mate in Plymouth said about Jephcott: Really good striker for his age. Scored a lot of goals last season and this. Works hard and will get you a goal from nowhere. A real fox in the box. Think we (PAFC) will want quite a bit of £££s for him and will be surprised if he leaves us this window. Told him that if they wanted money for him, that would rule us out...
I’ve not seen this reported anywhere still. Surely Burnsy can’t have better contacts than any sports journalist in the country?
Well it came from the person who said Gosling and Pochettino before they were reported anywhere of note...
See above. Not saying I do! As ever just passing on the names given when I asked a question to someone who occasionally will afford me info.
I don't know much about PAFC. My brother played for St Albans Wanderers with a chap named 'Wadey' an Argyle fan. He was prone to announcing "One Freddy Binney!" apropos of the nothing,in a loud voice. Could he give us an appraisal of Luke on the 'Binnometer' please?
I’m not calling in to question whether you heard it, more asking if perhaps your friend was getting a bit ahead of themselves? But as they were right on the first 2, maybe they’re credible on this too. We won’t have to wait much longer if we are going to hear anything.
I was really pleased when we signed Will Hoskins. I thought he would do well. Mind you I thought Trevor Senior was a good signing too. I should get a job as a Watford scout, I’d clearly fit in.
