Wfcforums have provided a live match chat facility (Shoutbox) for a long time. This was mainly as a service to people who were unable to watch or listen to commentary of the game so they could keep up.
As technology has improved this is now become less of a service for match updates and commentary and more of forum to add comments and opinion during the game. The issue with this is that the chats are then lost once the shoutbox is closed and also it's nigh on impossible to moderate and manage to a standard we would like. I also have a feeling that it is used far less now.

As such we are considering stopping providing the shoutbox. In match comments and commentary can be placed in each match thread with the bonus that they are saved for posterity along with pre and post match analysis.

I've added a poll (public). WFCForums are interested in your thoughts in this thread.

You're considering dumping off the only enjoyable aspect of the match day experience at the moment?

    Very WFCForumsy.

I rarely use it, but it is useful and as pointed out before the fact that comments are irretrievable would come as a blessing for some posters.

Well more are using it now so guess you will get a wider range of views and disagreements?

I imagine it's a major PITA to run and moderate (especially with bitter bipartisan nature of our support at the moment). TBF it's the old pizza/sex debate: when it's great it's a fantastic memorable experience when it's bad it's still alright. Bizarrely it was my only way of following the first half yesterday...

It does feel like it has become very negative in the shoutbox, more so than the forums in general
    Hostile even at times.

I don't think you can moderate how people feel but it probably is putting people off from joining in.
Sometimes you cant for whatever reason follow the game and it remains to some extent a good way to follow but think it was better when more kind people posted about what was happening.
Now just feels more and more like a daily Pozzo hate

The more methods of communication there are, the better as far as I'm concerned. Especially during these unprecedented times.

I have only been in there a couple of times but it is similar to the matchday experience, in so far as most comments you hear are negative. It's what football is all about, effing and blinding, calling the team shyt and the players ****s, until the magic moment we score and we're "by far the greatest team the world has ever seen".

For many people the match is an outlet where you can release your weekly frustrations and vent your anger in a controlled and understanding environment. Be it towards the opposition fans or our own players when they underperform.

The shoutbox should be a place where people can do the same now the matchday experience no longer exists. Remove all moderation and just add a warning that all people contribute there at their own risk and any comments made are not condoned by the website owners. Then leave everyone to it. So long as there are no libelous, homophobic, racist etc comments, then who cares? The chats arent saved anyway you said.

I tried to find it last night but couldn't. I've just noticed there is a separate tab for it.

But that isn't everyones experience of match day.
I find those that whinge constantly and loudly at the ground ******* annoying if Im honest and I don't think they are the majority.
I agree at venting frustration but I think many do that towards the opposition and ref.
There might be the odd shout of X is ******* useless etc but it isn't constant.

I agree, and I am categorically not one of those fans. But that's football fans for you. It brings the worst out of people. The Shoutbox is no different by the sounds of things. So in that regard, it's a highly successful representation of the match, which is the point of it isnt it?

Another point is, internet forums are a dying breed, I do not think it makes commercial sense to reduce the content offered by this website.

    I like shoutbox.
The raw emotion, usually negative, is just like standing on the terraces.
The moment we score or concede and some realise their stream is a minute behind is hilarious. The confusion caused by the "Yes. Get in !!!!!" post causing everyone to think we just scored again, only to find out that the poster has only just seen the goal from 3 mins earlier. Or the stress of "Pen !! Red card ?"...with no other clues, .......was it a pen, was it a red, which team etc ?
You seriously want to lose all that ?

I have no wish for it to be closed. I used to enjoy it when I couldn't get to the games

I explained why I don't join in recently, but if others enjoy it, and if it provides an outlet for those that feel they need one, then absolutely fine. I can easily just watch from a distance.

I think the version we had on the previous forums software was better where we could have a sticky that showed current score and team line up. It made it more useful for those without commentary.

For me all I see is 25 lines of largely rubbish, I generally just open it up and close it down at the end of the match and that's about it.

  13. The undeniable truth

It is, but its the same rubbish you get on the terrace or in the pub. Nothing wrong with a bit of rubbish....just banz innit ?

I like to get the flavour of the match if i cant get access to the game either in person or on tv

Also as my streams are generally behind the shoutbox ,normally get notice of goal ahead of streams i see which prepares you for the worst or for a good moment

Getting fed up though of the constant negativity of some posters .... you can block them on the forum but not on shoutbox or maybe I am wrong on that

I've mostly stopped using it now. It's become a pretty joyless experience.

I think there's definitely a place for it, but without an ignore list to filter out those who do little more than ruin the experience it's not worth using in its current form to me.

But as KGT said, if it gives old men a place to yell at clouds and keeps some of that out of the match thread, that's enough of a reason to keep it.

  18. GoingDown

Yeah, that's definitely down to the people that use it as opposed to the performances on the pitch over the last 2 years.

Keep it, I am not a prolific user, but I think it serves a purpose. Having said that I do wish the usual suspects did not try to spoil it for others, like they do on all other aspects of the forum, but we must not give in to them so either ignore them or stand up to them, but don't let them win by scrapping it.

  20. Emotions run high in a game and the shout box reflects that, but that’s what football is all about. It’s the constant negativity on the forum gets on my wick not the shout box.

Where else can moog encapsulate his many forum aliases into a single match long banter?
I rarely post in there but I do have it open and follow the games. The comments and shouts of "Gray is ***" or "Crapcart does it again" do feel like things you hear at live games.

Also the Deeney weight jokes last season before Sheff Utd away were some of the best I've heard.

Props to @Relegation Certs @GoingDown @Smudger @NathWFC and @The Voice of Reason for them.

@StuBoy also uses it as a release for his bowels when nothing else works.

True, although a couple of seasons ago I moved to the SEJ as I so was sick to the back teeth of one particular 'fan' a few rows away who spent every match screaming abuse at his own team. It has its own issues but makes for a much more enjoyable experience (aside from many of last season's performances on the pitch that is!) and it's a better view.

As for Shoutbox, I occasionally look in, but as those who I have ignored elsewhere on the board are visible, I don't post any comments. I wouldn't be able to bite my tongue!

When I was getting stick for being positive, I thought it was still being moderated as I saw Smudger in there so thought everything that was going on was the new acceptable as he is down as a Staff Member and no one was being warned or anything. An ignore/block feature would be handy as more would use it then I think. Without the feature, may as well change the name to Moanbox lol

I was on it sporadically yesterday and the only thing I saw was criticism of the team's performance which seems universal and you just constantly repeating we were in the top 6 in response.

I'd say you are the outlier currently.

I was in there on and off on Saturday and I was pretty positive, praising the first half and accounting Ivic for the drop off in performance. I also agreed with everything you said about the importance of Gray. I think you are being too sensitive - didn't see much wrong on there at all during QPR game, certainly not enough to make people upset.

  34. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

I had it on in the background on Saturday, and I thought it was OK. Much of the criticism of our performance was fair I thought. Last match it was OK too, imo.

OTT hyperbole on our prospects for the season, though.

But it made me laugh when Nath welcomed our goal by being critical of their defence, but that's par for the course.
