Completely forgot about this thread and thoroughly enjoyed reading through all that I'd missed over the past couple of years. Blown away by your success @reids but fully deserved by the hard work you've clearly put into it!

Manager of the the Portuguese team I've signed with has bought in completely which is great - although they got absolutely hammered today by Benfica B (6-0). The opposition (like 90% of the Portuguese 2nd division, defended zonally) left a big gap at the corner of the 6-yard area so I had 2 ideas:

Manager completely took on board my ideas, however we only had 4 corners - but used my ideas for 2 of them leading to the following - 2 routines - 2 good shots away, well chuffed despite the score.

Just thinking out aloud here however "set piece " managers/teams are seen as dour and
old school . Allardyce etc . Maybe you could consider "re branding" your analysis as
something other than set pieces given today's fashion for young foreign coaches
playing hi energy attractive football ?.
I don't mean this as any type of criticism however you could be seen as just a modern
day Jon Beck in today's climate.

I certainly get that - but times are changing, previously "set-piece" teams as you say are defined by their managers who bring with them set-piece prowess. However there's a lot of managers who don't have this in their locker but see it as an essential part of the game and feel they're missing out on a potential edge - Howe, Arteta, Klopp, Guardiola, Potter have all hired set-piece specialists which allows them to focus on the parts of the game they do excel in, but also not missing out on a key component of the game.

really interesting but be careful you don't give too much away about the clubs and the advice on social media to compromise your role or irritate the clubs.

Don't want to jinx anything. The problem is that I'm half-believing it might not just be a flash in the pan, otherwise I'd have been here joking about it.

Early days of course but the start of this season is looking similar to 2015/16 with the big boys all over the place. And we know how that finished...

Portuguese side I'm working for are top of the table (well for corners at least), 2 goals from 2.22 xG from 17 corners taken is pretty good going. Watford scored 1 goal from 3.35 xG with 133 corners taken last season...

Had a good meeting with a big team (currently in the top 6) from France the other day and he was hugely impressed and said that i'm miles ahead of all the other set-piece analysts he's seen (and the only negative he could find with my work was that it wasn't visually appealing). Sadly they've just hired someone and 80% of that persons role will be set-pieces, although he's unproven in that area so if their numbers aren't looking good in a couple of months he'll get me in.

Groningen - I have Robben (when he's not injured!) at my disposal that I'll try and get behind a short corner routine at some point!

How have they been from set pieces this season?

I've been to watch VVV Venlo a couple of times, once was against Groningen. Other than the top few teams, it's pretty much Championship standard.

How do you go about getting business - just approaching clubs?

  23. reids

    reids First Team

Ah we're playing VVV at the end of the month - we've had a couple of good chances but no goals yet sadly!

Yeah mostly through approaching staff (or getting approached by them) on LinkedIn/Twitter - although Groningen came about through a bit of luck, I'd tried approaching their analyst on LinkedIn last season as they were pushing for Europe but had only scored 1 corner all season but he didn't reply to my message.

Then a couple of weeks later I was at a coaching conference at the Leicester stadium and a Dutch journalist wanted to do a little article with me so we got talking and I told him about how I was trying to find a Dutch club to work with and mentioned that I'd been trying to get in at Groningen as they were doing badly from set-pieces and the journalist goes "I play 5 a side with their assistant manager - do you want me to pass him your number?" and things went from there!

3rd corner goal of the season for my Portuguese team - from only 30 corners taken!

A corner goal for my Championship side this week means my 3 teams have scored 4 corner goals from 114 corners taken (a 3.5%) conversion ratio and have conceded just once from 135 corners faced (0.74% conceded rate) which is good. Just leaves my Dutch team as the only team without a goal (from 30 corners taken) - would really like a goal there this weekend although the delivery has been awful, might have to switch approach after this weekend if the delivery remains poor.

Good movement from the goalscorer , looking generally disinterested and keeping out of the
eyeline of the defenders. As soon as kick is taken he makes his move towards back stick and takes
advantage of all defenders getting attracted to the ball\danger.
    Good set piece IMO .

All credit to the coach there, he's really embraced it and it's obvious that he drills the players with good set-piece techniques that aren't included in my routines (there's only so much I can include in remote reports) which is something lacking with the other teams I'm working with (which is why I'm having so much success with that particular team!), but can't really easily be fixed without day to day contact with the players

Just read this thread for the first time, started back in 2015 in your Hendon days. Genuinely fascinating the path you have trodden, even if it wasn't what you planned to do 5+ years ago. You seem to be doing really well, hopefully you get the results you need to garner more interest from rich clubs.

For set pieces, do throw-ins ever get attention? One thing that always bothers me when watching live football is how bad some throw-ins are, e.g. Ball thrown right to a players knee/thigh, thrown too fast, thrown to a heavily marked player etc. which completely ruins the advantage. Sometimes a throw-in seems as if it could be more dangerous than some Corners/Free Kicks.
