Could also go back and look at this thread and reflect on whether you and others were right to get on your high horse about "meltdowns" and stupid people believing everything they read on Twitter when the tweet from his agent that suggested he would be going to Granada was discussed. Because if he ends up there, as seems almost certain, you and the others would look pretty silly, wouldn't you?

I would much prefer to keep him here. I would rather see one of Deeney or Gray depart.

I want an up and coming youngster with a knack for scoring. Problem is how do we shift either of Deeney and Gray given their wages. Nonetheless as many a manager has said you cannot have too many strikers at a club. We have a formidable arsenal with which to crack various defences in this league. Ivic has got the basics right thus far in building a solid defence from the front. Our press was the best it has been for many a game on Saturday. The goals will come with more familiarity upfront.

Horrific business. Pozzo is panicking now. Desperate to generate funds.

    Agree to disagree.

Agree Welbeck is the best to an extent but I am not including him as I think Welbeck wants out, the club want him gone. Also regardless of his ability, Welbeck struggles with a game a week, never mind twice a week.

I just think we are a soft touch with the players and give them an easy way out. If the bid was decent I don't have an issue, but as it stand it looks like a bad deal from both a financial and footballing perspective and I don't really see the benefit to us as a club to follow through.

You may be basing this on his time in the Premier League. We are in the Championship. There is no evidence yet that he has regressed at this level.

I know its only 2 games but he was absolutely useless last season home and away against Tranmere

It remains to be seen whether he will still be any good at this level. I suspect he will do a decent job personally but not enough to justify his wages and I therefore hope we can move him on

There are 2 main reasons I want to keep him:
    1. He should kill it in the Championship in our system
    2. That's our striker sorted out if we get promoted.

If he leaves now for €18m and we get promoted, we will probably have to spend a similar amount on a striker next summer.

I think he is a cut above those players IRB. I know people will say it is only the Segunda but plenty of strikers who have made it in Spain have done it at a rate that Suarez has scored at. David Villa is one example when he played for Gijon. It is difficult to buy the knack of scoring but Luis has it. He is physical but skilled and good on the ball. I think he would enjoy it here. If he is going to be sold then a minimum fee should be fifteen million with a hefty sell on clause. He is well thought of by the Colombian national set up. Most Cafeteros think he is wasting time here and should be playing in a top tier league. I hope we keep him and if needs be have him for the PL. We would be so threadbare if we did go up striking wise. Pedro plus who ? Deeney,Gray, Murray are on the slide. Perica might make the odd contribution but that is it. Gino needs to think longer term.

How is being in the Championship going to fix any of those issues? Is he suddenly going to be faster in the Championship?

He obviously performed at this level years ago, but things change. Ellington was a good Championship striker once. Look how that worked out for us.

These things that you say needs fixing is just your opinion. We have yet to see him this league season to form a real view.

OK, so we write off anything that's come before and any judgement/views on a player purely because we are now a division lower? I'll keep my opinion on his lack of qualities as a footballer, regardless of what league we're in.

The tweet from his agent said nothing of the sort. It said the next step was onwards and upwards whilst looking for european football. It mentioned nothing about granada and could have been one of many clubs. The club then posted a picture of him and estupinan in watford kit and he proceeded to play in a preseason friendly. The links to granada have come much later.

I still maintain that people are daft to get worked up by a tweet.

There is no guarantee he will get 10+ goals! On what basis have you come to that conclusion?

Players can perform better at a lower level. Been happening for decades. And every player has some imperfections, I have yet to see a perfect footballer. If Gray is effective as our main striker and scoring goals then its job done. We wont know if he can do it yet as he hasn't played.

But came from the Bundesliga did he not as one of the top scorers? The debate was about translating form to a different league, not about their nationality.

Well we managed to work out it was likely Granada and the was the point of discussion, wasn't it? And the tweet suggested that he was going to be playing European and top flight football. Additionally, people didn't get worked up about it, they just discussed it then others jumped on them and accused them of "having a meltdown" and getting on their high horses about people being stupid to believe things from Twitter. Turns out the tweet was correct and you (and others) were wrong. A little humility wouldn't go amiss, maybe even an apology for incorrectly patronising others...?

    • His style is more in keeping with how we are playing now.
    • He’s always been better in a pairing which again, we are using.
    • Has decent pedigree at this level, which while isn’t a guarantee due to poor form over the past couple of years, it shows he knows the league and can score goals in it.
That’s how I came to form the opinion I have. All are fair points no? There is no ‘guarantee’ that any player will do anything before it’s done.

Gray may not be a great footballer , but his ability to get goals is fairly proven at championship level. He’s had 2 pretty decent seasons so I would also Expect him to bag a decent amount of goals if he plays regularly. The only caveat to that is what his dry spell has done for his confidence . But if he bangs a few in early on I’m sure that will sort itself out .

Nah I’m alright thanks. I don’t believe the tweet was relating to Granada at the time, it just happens to fit your narrative.

But I accept the Joelinton point was about nationality I guess! I should have just used Haller as the example...

Pretty confident he’d do well for us, but I think it’s clear he doesn’t want to be here. Seems fair enough, we’ve done nothing to develop him.

I wonder if Ivic being determined to involve those who are committed to the cause played a role? Unlikely, but it’s possible the club are backing his plan.

Perhaps the loan indicates we expect to fill the financial hole with money from other sales - hopefully the likes of Dawson, Pereyra, Welbeck etc and not players like Sarr (lol) or Hughes, and we’re hoping to use him after promotion.

    Disappointing.

I am more negative about this than most, but in fairness we do still have Cucho to come back next summer who is more top flight proven than Suarez.

He has been getting into the Colombia squad ahead of Suarez (although Suarez is saying he may plan for Spain).
