Isn’t the point about depth in a 46 game season with midweeks?

But typically one or two might rotate in, not the whole backup cast. It wouldn’t be the first time any of us have seen a player pull their level up a notch when playing with the full first team and then, once the spotlight is on them from the start in a cup game or whatever they look woeful.

That's a fair point and at stages of the season one or two of the players may play but not 5 or 6 at one time. If we played one or two of them with better, more experienced players around them they may play better and would certainly learn more. Not all of them are complete rubbish. Phillips and Agayaka(?) seem to be ok and with experience they may become players who can cope at this level. The issue with last night is that it was almost a full team of kids and that very rarely works. Liverpool kids for instance lost 6-1 at Wigan last night

While it wasn’t exactly a glittering performance, Garner did play the most accurate passes and have the most touches of all Watford players and had a passing accuracy of 89%. Thought he needed to be a bit more progressive, yes, but thought it was definitely one of the stronger performances.

Where did you see that stat? I'd quite like to see the rest of our team's stats.

Accurate passes demonstrates volume. So 5/5 (Accurate passes/attempted passes) would be 100% pass accuracy but 39/40 would likely demonstrate a higher capacity for accurate passing. There seem to be some really cool data visualisation things being worked on showing passing volume, direction and accuracy but not so readily available to the average fan except the odd post on Twitter.

It's a bit of a double-edged sword really. I think many would agree that the cups are an unnecessary distraction. Our squad is far too small to deal with fixture congestion etc and that is without another lockdown induced break from matches.

On the other hand, it's pretty difficult to lose to a League 2 side without playing terribly.
Therefore the 'ideal' situation of being out of the cup, having played well, is almost impossible.

Maybe. I'd wager that we need to step it up, significantly, if we want to finish towards the top of the table.

Cathcart is currently our top scorer!

I liked Agyakwa, inexperienced of course, but looked classy, and much more confident against Newport than against Oxford where he didn't really do much. Maybe he'll be involved in some league squads in the not too distant future. Phillips very talented, hope to see him push towards a place in the team in a year or two, but very very raw still. Those are the only ones of the young lads who have played for us this season who look as if they have any kind of long-term future with us

Some social media rumours going around that QPR would like him on loan if we terminate his deal here. I'm sure that will go down well with some on here, although without bringing anyone else in, it would leave us very thin in midfield

Good squad option, but sounds like Man U are whining about him not being a guaranteed starter. Think we can cope just fine without him now Hughes is back.

Chances of Hughes staying fit until the end of the season are slim though given his history - I certainly wouldn’t bank on it. We are light in CM as it is - I don’t rate Garner but it’s unquestionable that he needs replacing before we agree to cut short his loan (unless we have no option).

I think that would be very short-sighted.

Will Hughes has completed two matches, Cleverley has a poor history of injuries and normally gets hooked after 65mins, Chalobah is painfully inconsistent, Capoue has gone and Quina and Dele are injured.

Garner has, on occasion, been the best player on the day. He's never played senior football before and I think he's done alright considering the Ivic tactics.

That said, Man Utd will want us him to play every game, which isn't going to happen.

We would obviously need a "replacement" to make up the numbers, especially with Capoue having gone, but if we're talking about replacing what Garner brings to the squad then that really, really shouldn't be difficult, even for calamity Gino.

£50 for every backwards pass he made. Should come to around £5m.

I mentioned this on the transfer suggestions thread, but I’d be pretty happy to send Garner back and bring in Billy Gilmour instead. Tuchel wants to loan him out.

I don't think he's as bad as people make out. Certainly earlier in the season on the few occasions we tried passing at pace he was very much part of trying to make that happen. Can't leave without a replacement lined up anyway I would have thought

He's exactly what he is, a kid getting his first taste of Championship football. Nothing against Garner at all and no blame on him but it's been a bad signing by the club. He doesn't look physically capable in this league yet and we can't afford to nurture another club's youngster if we want promotion this season. Especially in a position we're lacking in already.

Moreover, he’s not even their manager yet. Only tabloids saying he’s willing to loan him out so not sure how much I’d read into it. Expect a new manager will want to take a look at all players available to him.

He'll probably be a decent player in the future but we've got enough passengers and bang average players as it is, he'd be better suited at a nothing club like QPR who will finish mid-table. Perhaps amongst less talented players he'll stand out and get more of an opportunity. The best thing about him going elsewhere is that it'll get rid of Man Utd 'fans' asking about him on tw@tter (Also find that weird, why would you give a ****?)

Ok. Well there’s already a report from the fairly reliable Daily Record that this is the case (that Gilmour will be loaned out). Tuchel will be announced tonight I reckon

Yes some managers like to run the rule over players in training but others will set out their plans in the interview. Also, wouldn’t be surprised if many of Chelsea’s loan/development decisions are made by someone other than the manager.

Certainly seems a very good player and I would imagine would play a fair bit if he came to us

  35. Steve Leo Beleck

He's just... a nothing player. Nowhere near as good as Chalobah was when he was here as a 17/18 year old. The total lack of pace, strength, heading, tackling and finishing ability will limit his career progression. United fans seem to think he's the new Michael Carrick but he doesn't read the game well enough and is far too negative in his passing unless under no pressure at all. He's a body on the bench so in that sense we'd miss him but let's be honest, he wouldn't be starting for any of the clubs in the top half of the Championship, let alone our serious promotion rivals.
