Would be a good signing on paper (haven't seen him play).

His name has been mentioned a few times on here but not sure if that was due to links or just suggestions.

This would make sense seeing as it's clearly an area we are looking at, yet we seem to have baulked at Grimes' valuation, and we seem to have gone off Busquets

No it hasn't, we were linked with him over 3 weeks ago:

From what I've seen of him recently I'd be pretty underwhelmed by this. He has a lot of potential, but he also has a touch of the Sarr-esque stroppiness about him and is very inconsistent. Sometimes games can pass him by, and he plays too negatively even though he has the ability to be a very good passer and striker of the ball.

He'll still take time and a fair bit of coaching to be really effective. I suspect he'll be pushing for Quina's role in the team if he comes.

I really hope we won't be intending to use Garner as a 6 if he comes in. He can theoretically play anywhere in central midfield, but ball winning is not one of his best attributes right now. We currently complain about our midfield being too lightweight and too easily by-passed, the only player he'd currently be an improvement on in that regard is Quina I reckon.

He won't give us much more in the way of steel.

So more of a Doucoure replacement than a Capoue replacement? Transfermarkt says he played DM in United’s Europa League games last year, but he also has 8 goals in 10 PL2 games which suggests he is a little more attacking.

I think even if he had all the raw materials in the world, I wouldn’t want a 19 year old with less than 5 senior starts to be our Capoue replacement. DM isn’t really a role that is kind on inexperienced players. (Young Chalobah the only one that comes to mind, but I suppose I would have been open to Ampadu or Gilmour as DMs too).

But he should be able to keep the ball better than Chalobah. Tricky one, Capoue has big shoes to fill

As I've pointed out above, he can and has played as a 6, 8, 0r a 10 for Utd's teams and England's youth teams.

As a 6 he's more like a Carrick-esque deep-lying playmaker, but with shielding the defence not one of his strongest attributes and with his age he still lacks some alertness and physicality. He also has a cracking hit on him when the mood strikes, which have also seen him given Scholes comparisons.

Given we still need more in the way of tacklers and ball-winners, I'd hope he would be used here as a more advanced playmaker/goalscoring CM (as per Quina's current position).

Oh wow. Just confirmed by the club on twitter. That was quick.

Perhaps, but only because one of Garner's most annoying traits is he's one of those midfielders sometimes prone to just repeatedly making 6-yard passes right back to his CBs all the time (even though he has the ability to do much more and be more adventurous in his passing). It could be a confidence thing at times, but it's something which will need to be coached out of him.

I don't see him being used in an advanced position, he's more likely to be Capoue's replacement playing a defensive midfield position. Probably closes the door on us going for Grimes and confirms Capoue is likely to be off. Another cheap option, but raw and will need a lot of nurturing in order to hold down a regular first team spot.

An extra body to pick from though and clearly has some talent. I'm open minded about this one, but it's certainly more of a risk than it would have been had we signed a player like Grimes, or keept Capoue.

His squad number will be 16 and he'll be available for selection tomorrow

Who do you think he would replace in our current lineup out of Chalobah and Cleverley were that to be the case?

Well, we need bodies in central midfield. Never heard of him but my Friday lunchtime research shows me that he's a captain in the younger age groups, loves a crossfield ping and Utd fans are all replying to the club's tweet saying w@nky things like he's a "proper baller". I would take the last of these with a massive pinch of salt though as pretty sure that Chelsea fans thought Josh "Neat and tidy" McEachran was also a baller.

When I originally heard the rumour it was in the context of a Doucoure replacement, but I would agree that he seems more suited to the Capoue role

It's a risk, but so was Chalobah back in 12-13. I'm happy enough with this if we get one more in CM along with an LB, CB and RW.

Chalobah. It can't have escaped Ivic's attention that he's been immobile, lazy in possession and looks scared. Cleverley was captain and showed the youngsters the right attitude last Friday.

We’re going to look silly when the window closes and we still have 9 strikers and 8 centre midfielders.

Based on what? I think he is ultimately more suited to being one of the more advanced CMs. He is not good enough of a ball-winner for the Capoue role (plus I think too much of his scoring potential is wasted when he's made to stay deep).

I don’t think he’s been brought in as a replacement for anyone leaving. We need bodies in that position anyway - Ivic’s has been explicit in saying he wants a big squad and will rotate often. No way do the likes of Chalobah and Cleverley get through 46 league games unscathed.

Scored 8 in 10 for United U23’s so doesn’t seem to be a sitting midfielder either.

As one of Chalobah's biggest proponents I can't say he has been anything but poor under Ivic and it's not the manager's fault. You see glimpses of him return and it goes again.
