    Interesting.
I skipped the PS4 having all the previous consoles. The slated price is reasonable. Whether I plump for this or not depends on whether they still want to milk gamers for subscriptions and what the 4K gaming is like.

Just waiting for Sony to come in with a lower price for the PS5?
My son just said they have a smaller version of said xbox's at $299.

Yeah. It's not overly clear how lower in spec the Xbox S will be. Haven't read too much on it yet.

I think Microsoft caught Sony by surprise with this announcement hitting them the day before some big game reveals and Ubisoft Forward's presentation.

They need to blink soon and reveal the price and pre-orders as with Cyberpunk 2077 and Watchdogs Legion, two games I want to play coming out in the next couple of months, I want to know whether I get them for the PS4 or not because if I do, I won't bother getting the PS5 until well into next year.

Wasn't the rumoured price of the diskless PS5 £349?

A 'friend' told me at they keep faithful to the xbox because they use it mainly as a media centre. Streaming 'sourced' material (notably blurays) become 'problematic' on the PS because of Sony's copyright protection.

I've heard that the d/l only version of the xbox x is a much lower spec (it's cheaper). All have a 1TB drive as standard which can be expanded - I don't know if that's OEM though.

We had a discussion at home and we won't be an early adopter as as the latest Halo instalment is being dual released on both xbox formats.

ill probably pre-order it as soon as it comes available. i use game pass ultimate on my pc and current xbox, and have had an xbox live account for the last 12 years. got too many friends that also play on xbox to make a switch now. i turned 31 earlier this year, and i find a session of gaming now and again is the only way that i can stay in touch with a lot of them.

i actually quite like it, not every game on there is something I’m particularly interested in playing but there are enough new titles popping up at the moment to keep it interesting. i think it will become more useful in the coming years as that is clearly the model Microsoft is moving towards.

at the same time I have a big collection of games on steam, and you can’t beat their collection.

If you never had them then it would probably be hard to see the appeal I guess?

Personally I have been waiting for the time to hit where I feel like I don’t wanna play games anymore and I definitely don’t have as much time to sit and play as I used to. That being said though, there are occasions when I have a couple of hours, or the girlfriend is working the night shift when actually i still find it really fun.

I would rather sit and play something than sit and watch tv for example.

Each to their own I guess.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear something today. Didn't xbox buckle last time with their price only for Sony to slip in undercutting them.
Looking forward to Legion, it looks like one hell of a game.

I guess my issue was that I was utterly **** at these games at 15 so didn't have the incentive of continuing to humiliate myself. Was slightly uncomfortable about my sons at the age of about 10 playing GFA, shooting cops and stealing cars.... !

I'm utterly **** too playing fps online but it's still fun crushing my sons mates now and again. Tbh there is such a variety to play these days with great storylines. For instance the last of us. They plough so much time and money into the games there is always something for everyone to enjoy. As you said GTA is hilarious, Red dead 2 had me in tears of laughter when you go of the beaten track and explore what the game has to offer.

What does age have to do with anything? A lot of games these days tell better stories and are more of a spectacle than most films and TV shows. That's personally what I play for.

I'll play FIFA and COD online a bit, but it's the stories that drive me to play. I genuinely feel sorry for people who have missed out on experiencing games like Bioshock, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Arkham Knight.

These dogfights are at far too low an altitude than historically accurate but other than that the modded game is very realistic. Dicta Boelcke does apply. Mods cover the entire Second World War in all aerial combat theatres. Steel Panthers World At War is another excellent tactical game that might be up your street. Also very historically accurate with ballistics and scenarios.

I wrote some of the back end Engine code for Sims 3 on the Unity Engine and I can personally say the power of modern game Engines are getting stupidly good. Look at the Last Of Us 2 for example. Even Horizon Zero Dawn as a PS4 exclusive looked amazing and that was made on an older version of Unreal. I still have a PS4 and love it. might get the PS5 but will wait till all the early bugs and growing pains have been ironed out first. I made the mistake of buying the Xbox 360 in 2006 launch day and got the RROD!!!!

TBF to Microshyte they fully serviced my box (3 years of heavy use before RROD) and when I kicked up a stink about having to take it to a couriers myself I got 3 years of xbox live, two halo controllers and £50 of game vouchers gratis...

The games that will be coming out for PS5 in a few years time, when producers start to really maximise its potential are going to be near enough photorealistic. In terms of lighting definitely, and perhaps animation too. ( Im atlakign about humans , the hardest thing to recreate in CGI)

RDR2 has come the closest so far. Imagining RDR3 in 4-5 years time makes me very excited.

I switched from PS3 to Xbox One for the last gen because most of my mates were on Xbox, although they're all too old and busy to play much any more. To be honest I dislike all the Xbox exclusives (Halo, Gears etc are overrated) and there have been a fair few PS exclusives I wished I could've played, but other than that I don't really think there's much difference.

Decisive factors for me will be:
    • Exclusives,
    • Backwards compatibility,
    • MS Game Pass (as I have it for PC anyway).
    So far I'm still undecided.

During lockdown my son and I did the H:TMCC (also buying the disappointing ODST and Reach add-ons) in co-op. I was pleasantly surprised how well H:CE and, the derided at the time, H2:A held-up (I suppose it was such a groundbreaking game) - especially with the updated graphics and music (ISTR that the games industry is the major buyer/driver of contemporary 'classical' music) . You did feel a drop in 'enjoyment' as the series progressed (known in our house as the "Family Guy Problem"). Thankfully the lack of co-op on H5:G meant we didn't have to experience (again) the nadir of the franchise.

H:I does look good (especially as it's being released on the XB1):

Though the release is being delayed due to reviews of "...the gamers...". I do like the YT comment that sums this up:

It's coming out on PC so no need to buy a console for it (assuming your PC is gaming level).

I've just seen H:TMCC is included in the Game Pass, so I might give it a go - maybe the early games will be more up my street, especially as so few games have a local co-op these days. Which would you recommend as the pinnacle of Halo?

Game devs can't win, you only have to look at Steam comments for any game to see that! Although some series (Project Cars, I'm looking at you) are so desperate for good reviews they totally destroy the soul of the series.

Ooooh your question has caused discord & division chez bois de Boreham:
    1. I say H:CE as it's uncomplicated has a good story and is 'long' (and looks/sounds really good with upgraded effects package).
    2. No. 2 son says H2 because of the story and updated character abilities compared to H:CE (and looks/sounds really good with upgraded effects package).
