I don’t disagree. But I still think we will spend a little bit. I don’t think every deal will be a loan/free.

I don’t disagree. But I still think we will spend a little bit. I don’t think every deal will be a loan/free. If winning the league is the only target, and the club are being open with that, then that doesn’t tally with doing it entirely on the cheap.

Leave Fabbrini out of this! Another talent that we were completely lost on how to use.

So we've had some good and some bad. Basically the same as any signings from any clubs. Let's be fair, the players we got back then gave us an incredible first season and then helped us get promoted 2 years later

I'm not sure how you can conclusively say most of those are better centre backs than the ones we have, despite ours not being great.

Take Norwich for instance, their defence was a disgrace last season and Godfrey was a significant part of that, and there are no guarantees Gibson will be very good after his lengthy absences.

Bournemouth conceded 1 more goal than us last season and have since lost their best CB in Ake. Kelly has actually been good since stepping in, but Mepham is crap. I wouldn't have him here.

Brentford's CBs seem pretty average and I doubt much different to ours.

Bristol City - most of us here were aghast at the thought of calamity Mawson coming here, so again no idea how you can say he's any better.

Swansea - yes Rodon is likely better, but Swansea fans seemed to think Guehi was pretty similar in ability to Wilmot.

Derby - Bielik is their DM. Their CBs were Clarke and Davies. As a side-note Bielik is class though - if he wasn't out injured long-term I'd def have def been up for signing him for our DM spot. Clarke might be better than what we have, yet wasn't liked enough by Brighton to be kept for the PL.

Most of those you mention, including ones I've referenced above, are completely untested at PL level.

I'm not doubting your knowledge but how much of these players have you seen. Norwich were far worse than us at the back. Brentford seemed to be defensively sound last season. Bournemouth have been poor in defence. Mawson at Bristol City? Bristol City finished bottom half and conceded a bucket load of goals. Cardiff conceded the most out of the top 10. Cooper at Millwall seems to be highly thought of. Derby conceded in excess of 60 goals. Reading, Blackburn and Stoke I presume was a joke.

Do people think we're done 'strengthening' CB or that we'll bring in one more? If we're planning on playing 3 at the back, then we'd probably need 6 senior CBs. Signing a young, left-footed defender in the 5-10m range would obviously be ideal. Hard to tell if that's actually being sought but interest in Mawson and Gibson suggests that it is something being looked into.

Hope and expectation aren’t the same thing. That’s where you’re going wrong. Once again we appear to have someone here who claims to know other’s opinions.

I hope he does well. I have no idea if he will but his career to date is below the level I think we should be aiming for. Hopefully he shows he has ability beyond his CV to date.

I'd have all of our centre-backs at this level over any that Yellowkicks has mentioned.

In the Premier League though we know they're consistently not good enough and make too many individual errors due to lack of concentration, which isn't as essential in the Championship.

The biggest thing at this level is being able to score goals and win when not playing well! 3-4 wins on the bounce can take you from relegation strugglers to play-off chasers! All about momentum and consistency. At this level i'd expect Dawson, Cathcart & Kabasele to be on it having played Premier League football for the last 4-5 years!

  16. Burnsy

So it’s not essential that our CB’s can concentrate or stop making errors in this league? You’re gonna have to explain that one. We can’t win every game 4-3...

The majority of the "Udinese rejects" that succeeded here had some pedigree. Abdi had just played quite a few games in Serie A for them and was a Swiss international, Ighalo was coming from La Liga where he'd scored a few, and also had a decent record in the Spanish second division.

This guy is 23 and has played a total of 21 games in Serie B, another 6 in Serie A (two seasons ago), and a handful in Chile's top division. Zero pedigree, very little playing time for a 23 year old, and no real reason to think he's anything other than another Marc Navarro.

Yep. I am certain this guy will be a squad filler dud. I'm pretty sure we've got zero cash to spend to be honest, so it's just a case of backup.

  19. Angella had no CV to speak of when he arrived. They are fairly similar in that respect. ‘He didn’t cost £10m so he must be ****’ just makes us sound like typical arrogant PL fans. I’ll wait to see how he looks over a handful of games before making my mind up.

If this guy is centre back number 6 (and we bring in someone good to start alongside Wilmot in a partnership or back 3), were unlikely to find better or cheaper for that role. That’s a big if though.

That isn't what I said though, was it.....

If you'd like me to explain it to you then I don't mind. What I said/implied was that lapses of concentration at this level don't always go punished by Championship forwards, however, in the Premier League they do, as we know only too well! I certainly didn't say or imply that we don't have to worry about making errors or not concentrating at all.

Ultimately, Dawson & Cathcart are more than good enough at this level and are tested at this level! Kabasele has never played at this level, he's been a level above where we are now and was arguably our best centre-back in the Premier League in the Gracia season.

I have no worries at all about any of them for this season.

    F**k me, you're very negative.

  22. NathWFC

Angella had just played 14 games in Serie A, even scoring 4, the season before we signed him. I believe injury prevented him playing more.

Not a single person has said "he didn't cost £10m so he must be ****". What I'm saying is that, on the face of it, signing a 23 year old who has barely kicked a ball and has only really played in very weak leagues, very much stinks of Navarro more than it does Angella.

Some of our signings are just bizarre and crap. A lot of them, in fact.

I'm not sure Ivic has the final say but he must be involved in deciding if a player who has been training with us for a few weeks is good enough and this suggests he has done enough to say he is. His CV is not great but maybe this his chance to get his career going. Angella came here with very little playing time and did well but Belkalem came with reputation as being a very good player and wasn't.
    Lets give him a chance

Centre-backs that can complete a pass are a good thing to have. If this bloke turns out to be one of them he'll play. Far too often our CBs either panic and hoof the ball long, ping a rocket at a center-mid who has pressure breathing on him or hit a pass out wide to the player's back foot (or further behind) resulting in more negative play and more pressure. We need to get better distribution out of the back or we'll keep getting squashed by pressing teams. Fingers cross that this bloke can help.

Sierralta was picked from Udinese because of the way Ivic sets his team up. Need to be good in a low block, comfortable playing short/long, decent aerially. He fits the system - whether he works out we don’t know, but he suits what Ivic wants and that can only be a good thing.

Realistically, there's almost always a 'but...' involved in any players coming to us this season. Suarez looks a great prospect 'but' he's only done it in the Segunda. Estupinan has awesome pedigree for the Championship 'but' will he stick around?

I know he doesn't have great pedigree, but I prefer to stay positive about this signing, someone's past doesn't necessarily determine their future, we could be the kick start he needs for his career

You said ‘In the Premier League though we know they're consistently not good enough and make too many individual errors due to lack of concentration, which isn't as essential in the Championship’

I really don’t know how else you would expect someone to take that comment but thank you for clarifying as I don’t think what you said was clear. Your explanation has been far clearer.

And no, I’m not ‘very negative’. I’ve been plenty positive on a number of threads. But likewise, I am negative about our CB situation - that’s nothing new. Not everyone has to see everything in a positive light just to appease those who do. I have differing opinions on Cathcart and Kabasele. Doesn’t mean I’m right, doesn’t mean I’m wrong. But I’m allowed to display a different opinion as much as you. The difference is I wouldn’t be saying ‘F*ck me, you’re too positive’
