Nothing unusual about that. When do clubs every officially disclose how much they bought or sold a player for?

Some of the Watford fan reactions to him leaving on Twitter which include describing him as 'one of our best ever players' and hoping Everton 'smash their way into the top 6' are both depressingly predictable from our fanbase and sickening to the core.

Much as I loved Micah Hyde and Richard Johnson, Doucs is a way better player than those guys.

Can't say I'll be supporting Everton however

Putting aside the bedwetting (******* Lionel Messi would struggle to get Everton top 6), and overall legacy at Watford, in terms of pure ability, he must be well up there?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I doubt many of us wanted him to leave 12-18 months ago.

    Good luck Doucs

He was one of our better players for the last 4 seasons and at times was our best player. Last year wasn’t great, it’s clear the time has come to part ways and we have got a decent fee from a team that’s about his level. I don’t feel like club or player owed each other anything any more.

    Good luck Doucs.

Can't say I blame you. You don't want Everton as your 2nd team. I have Everton as my 1st team with Watford (admittedly a distant) 2nd. Imagine how depressing that would be.

£12m I heard, £2m upfront. £10m if it snows in Hertfordshire in April 2022.

At least Everton don't do relegation, hey.

He’s better sure. But football is more than that at our level. I will always feel a bigger affiliation to players like Richard Johnson because I felt they put themselves on the line every game for the club and were invested in every minute they played for the club - can’t say the same for Doucoure sadly.

Club legends or heroes shouldn’t be based on ability alone.

Good point about what qualifies you as such.

Mooney would fit the same category.

But I don't see Doucs as one who didn't try; more like he lost his way when the team did, and maybe some confidence.

Sure he was disappointing this season, but in the awful West Ham away game it was still him pushing on and setting up our goal even when we were three down.

He also contributed to plenty other of our better moments. We've been noticeably worse when he hasn't played despite his drop in form and seemed to have a good team ethic.

Be interesting to see how he goes in a different environment and under a highly rated coach.

He's no club legend (has anyone suggested he is?), but certainly ranks for me as one of the best midfielders we've had, at least in the last 20 years. He also looked like one of the worst, at times.

I’d clap. Then I’d have that clap rammed straight back in my face as he celebrates a last minute winner as if he’s won the World Cup.

Really rated him, still do despite a below par season just gone.

The whole thing about him talking about moving whilst with us is a touch misleading. He got asked questions and he purely stated his ambition to play in the CL one day. Never kicked up a fuss about trying to force that move though and always gave his all on the pitch.

I have a personal reason to want Everton to do well this season and them having Doucoure has made that easier to do so.

Hope he has a great year and good luck to him.

On a side note why does everything in sport these days have to be a "project"?
It has overtaken "journey" as the favourite nonsense word.
What's wrong with club or team? Almost as bad as " the football club" said after someone says the name of the team in a football context. It's implicit fools!

"Project" means you're allowed to **** things up for a while as it's just the start of a long journey. It buys the incumbant a bit of time....

Total gobbledygook, the sort of twaddle spoken by the 12 year olds named Jasper and Tristan who inhabit the corridors of the NTC, spouting drivel and producing shiney brochures for this week's re invention of the FFT plans of 1983!

They will probably take up their usual mid table spot and sack the manager mid season ..

    Good luck to him.

This is definitely the beginning of the end of an era. I doubt we'll be signing players of his quality again in our lifetimes.

But hey, it's much better to have a team full of players who put themselves on the line every game for the club and are invested in every minute they played for the club. But who aren't actually very good at football.

All the pundits on SSN creaming themselves over Everton signing Doucoure, they obviously didn't watch him very much last season.

The assumed figure for Doucoure is £20m. If that's roughly correct, I think that's a shocking piece of business by the club.

It might rise to £25m, with add-ons, but I still consider that low.

Doucoure is a £30m player. I'm really surprised the club sold him for such a low figure. Look at £41m for Ake, or £33m for Watkins.

Everton were desperate to sign him as well. They are crowing from the rooftops over this. Even on SkySports they are calling it the steal of the window to date.

Good luck to him. Players come and go and for me he deserves his move. I can't criticise him one little bit. On his day a joy to have in the team on a bad day atleast he tried.

We need money. Every potential buying club knows it and will exploit it. On this one things were complicated more because, for some odd reason, Doucoure had his heart set on a move to Everton which prevented us allowing an auction to develop which would have surely led to a higher fee.

In fairness, values are a bit hard to call at the moment - we've signed James Rodriguez for £12 million, for example.

The COVID stuff has thrown a spanner in the works, plus you have to consider the fact that Watford had been relegated, Doucoure is 27 and (from what I've read on here) Watford actually wanted to sell him given that he was one of your top earners (if not the top earner?) - that makes it a buyers market. Ake and Watkins are both younger, I presume both were on less money and we don't know whether there was any pressure on either club to actually sell.

From our perspective I wanted the player, but in the current market context I'd have wanted us to look elsewhere at £30m.

We have to sell and his value will only drop year on year from here even if we sold Sarr instead. If £20m is all they will pay, Gino had no option.

We need the money, but we cannot give players away. This deal will tell other clubs we are desperate and we can be taken advantage of. The knock-on affect does not play out well for Watford.

No matter how poor some may think Doucoure was last season, he was still very high on breaking-up play, successful tackles and metres run. He was one of the top players in the Premier League in these categories. He's an established Premier League player with plenty of experience coming into his prime at 27. He's an incredible athlete with a great track record for always being available and avoiding injuries. There should be a premium paid for a player like this.

It was a crazy low figure, that I just cannot understand why the club settled for such a reduced figure. Certainly destroys any notion they are ruthless negotiators. We didn't even get a loan player from Everton to sweeten the deal. Whichever way you look at this, it's a rubbish deal for Watford.

Yes you are right, they should have insisted that someone bought him for £30m.
Our only option was not to sell, and that really isn't an option for us.

Had Watford dug their heels in and carried this to the final few days of the window I think Everton would have paid £30m. They really wanted him, that's the point. If they had other options and were a bit half-hearted, maybe there's a case to be made, but they weren't. They've wanted Doucoure for ages. I bet Everton cannot believe their luck to get him for £20m. It's a lottery win for them.
