Worth pointing out that I've seen Callum Wilson's name linked with Tottenham too, apparently Bournemouth want £20m+, Tottenham are only willing to offer £10m

Spurs want to get better don't they ?

I know it's hard for them to get a striker who wants to be back up to Kane but not sure their fans would take to having 2 relegated strikers linked.

Surely someone like Ings would be a better option?

  4. I've said it before he needs to move on, and I'd even do it for free. He's a club legend but we're stuck in this never ending loop of only ever playing Troy Deeney and not evolving as a team.

PLEASE let this be true, we need to cut costs and this would be a great way to do it. I imagine we'd keep Welbeck too if this happened

They have a couple of journalists that are usually spot on with us, don't confuse the sports pages with the rest of the rag.

Having said that, this would be a totally bonkers signing for Spurs and can never see Deeney getting on with Mourinho.

I can't understand why so many want Deeney out. It's bizarre. It maybe a nothing story, but the very fact he's been linked to a move to Spurs should tell fans a few things. Who would have expected Ighalo at United?

We need to keep hold of him, especially now we're in the Championship. He'll play an integral part in our season for sure. I want to see a partnership between him and Welbeck next season. It has rarely been used, but that will get the best out of him.

I know he always saves his best performances for Arsenal and Villa matches, but he did look good linking up with Welbeck in our final game.

With Troy's "grumbly" knee, a bit part role for a club like Spurs should be the ideal dream move for him.

Get's to stay in the PL and intensify his rivalry with Arsenal. Chance to finally play in Europe as well. Can then drop down to the Championship with Birmingham afterwards or go to the MLS.

Be nice for Walsall to finally get their sell-on too.

I like your ultraistic view. It's humbling and if we didn't need him I'd go along with that too.

However, just say we did sell Deeney, who would we have upfront? Welbeck, maybe, but it's not likely he'll be able to play at 46 game season. Cucho and Suarez are smaller players who work between the lines and look for pockets of space. Deeney is the perfect foil for that type of player to benefit from.

We've got no one else that can play the target man role. Success no, Okaka is no longer at the club. Gray definite no.

We'd have to completely redesign the entire team to play a different way if Deeney was sold. Ok, that may not be a bad thing, but getting in a new coach, who maybe new the the league and English football, it's asking a lot to hit the ground running if we are to completely redesign the squad in such a short space of time. It'll be a mess.

It's a question of evolution not revolution. Time is against us, so we need to keep what we have and integrate new ideas naturally over time.

Using my head you're correct. His experience would be vital to our efforts. His partnership with Danny would work well. Neither would play every game but having some youngsters pushing them hard is a must. Danny and Troy could help the you get players coming through. Whatever anyones opinion is of Troy is entirely up to them but we desperately want and need a strong spine to the team.
If he wants to go well that's another matter. I'd thank him and wish him well.

I can’t see him going and being 2nd fiddle to somebody like Kane , doesn’t need the money and seems to revel in the leader of the club role

if he stays with us he will continue to be relevant especially if he leads us to promotion , if he becomes a bench player he will soon drift into insignificance and become forgotten by everybody

not sure if he has what’s needed for us left in him or not ,would at this point certainly rather keep Sarr /Hughes /Gerry than Deeney

not sure how I would feel coming up against Deeney playing for another club , I would be a bit sad personally , perhaps he should go to China

Doing it in six weeks is only something you can do in Football Manager. In real life it would be a disaster. It has to be a gradual change over a period of time.

In all seriousness of he does go, it'll be a shame there won't be a testimonial for him in the current climate.

It’s the championship. We chucked virtually a whole new team in and nearly got automatic at our first attempt. We can absolutely succeed without a 32 year old shipping container with a dodgy knee.

I would never have wanted to keep Deeney if we had stayed up, but now we are in the Chump, I think he could still make a decent contribution. However, if he does stay and we win promotion next season I would absolutely not want to retain him for the PL, as those days are gone for him IMO.

I’m not against keeping him but strongly disagree with HB1 that we can’t do without him and change our playing style.

We’re about to get a new manager with his own way of playing.

We’re very likely to lose at least 3/4 of last years first teamers.

We’re going to be integrating a load of fringe players and unknown entity’s from Udinese and elsewhere.

Playing to Troy’s strengths was everything that was wrong with us last season.

The fact that we are about to have so much change and are in an inferior league means the notion we have to continue to play in a way to suit Troy is quite frankly absurd.

By all means keep him, but don’t continue to build the bloody team around him!

I'm not sure you fully understand my point. I'm not against moving on beyond Deeney and changing our style but it has to be a gradual process. It cannot be done in 6 weeks. There has been far too much turmoil already.

I'm not saying we use him as a sole target man, but in a two. Take Deeney out and that severely weakens us, IMO.

  25. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

But, our team is likely to change beyond all recognition. Nothing can be gradual because there will be so many changes anyway. If there aren’t, well fantastic that means we will have kept hold of most of our players, but I think unfortunately that is unrealistic.

Continuing to build a team around Troy doesn't make any sense now that he's that bit older, slower and likely to be ever more injury prone. We need to evolve the team so that it can compete for the next 5 years.

But that doesn't mean that he doesn't have any value to us if he were to stay and be a positive leader behind the scenes. With the likes of João Pedro and (hopefully) Cucho and Luis Suarez coming through, having his and Welbeck's experience for balance would be a positive asset.

Also, none of the other four offer the physical presence of Deeney to the same extent and there will be some games when we'll need that. If Deeney goes I think we'd have to bring someone in to do the same job. For all his size, Success doesn't look like he's willing to apply his physicality and Gray isn't up to it either (plus he's on the highest wages of the lot I believe).

So on balance I'd prefer that we kept Deeney and transitioned him to be more of a father figure like John Eustace. Have him there but playing half the games whilst we blood in the younger generation.

That might be unrealistic as a) we might not be able to keep that suite of strikers, b) Troy might not be content playing that role and c) we may have to way up an offer vs. how much value we can get out of him in the long term. But don't think the choice is simply between keeping Deeney as the main man and cashing in.

I think you're completely wrong. We changed the team completely in far less than 6 weeks in 2012 and made the play offs:

We replaced the team with better players back in 2012, which will not be the case this time. We are in a position of strength right now. Selling our top players will only weaken us, IMO. It's the reverse of 2012.

It is the reverse but we’re coming from a stronger position. Whatever anyone likes to think with their rose tinted glasses, our championship team of 2012 is nowhere near as good as our squad as it stands right now. It’s also ignoring the fact Deeney is old, slow and ineffectual. We could easily replace him with someone better, not worse.

Oh, we're still insisting Deeney is important and not a huge detriment to the club, the team and the way we play.

    Cool.
