Keith Mercer scored with his head if I remember correctly. In those days we didn't have VCR but I used to tape the commentary on my tape recorder. Sadly those old tapes have long since gone !!
Correct. I ask because near the end of the coverage on The Big Match the cameras panned into the Rookery End and I briefly saw myself on TV which was a big thing back then!.
I’m usually pretty good with this stuff, but I don’t remember this game, or it being on The Big Match at all. It seems a strange choice of TV game but I suppose they were jumping on the bandwagon of Watford soaring away at the top of the 4th division at that time.
Think G Plumley was in goal for NC and played a blinder which was why about a dozen years later I wasn't too concerned that he was going to play in goal for us in a SF.
We were runaway leaders at the time under GT so an element of intrigue . Brentford away and Southend home and away also televised. And West Ham in the FA Cup which wasn't shown due to industrial action.
Not Brentford away. That was the following season, a 3-3 draw. The 77/78 game was a 3-0 midweek win early in the season when Sam Ellis single-handedly repelled a half-hearted pitch invasion by some Brentford schoolboys.
He was a legend at Newport. Me and a mate went up to see him at his wine bar, Romans, in Caerleon and he dropped us off at the ground afterwards for a match against Aylesbury. When he pulled up in the car park, the crowd started going potty and singing his name. He was a really good bloke, just a shame the Spurs game didn't go so well! We lost because of a lack of confidence in him, and frankly an all round lack of confidence anyway, rather than because of him, I believe. McLellend's half hearted block that sent the ball past GP just summed the whole thing up.
I was looking at http://watford.fcdb.info/ and they had a link to http://www.watfordfcarchive.co.uk/ so it is still there but is now .co.uk rather than .com So glad all the data Trefor amassed on the club is still available for us to enjoy.
If anyone doesn’t know, Matt Rowson and others are redeveloping the wonderful Watford archive at the moment and a new version will become available in the fullness of time.
This is probably said as a person of a certain age however I can look at a seasons fixtures and results from the past and imagine how the games were played out much like I used to memorise cricket test matches from the 70s and visualise every days play. .The playfair cricket annual was my summer Bible !!. However today every goal in every game is shown on TV.. Maybe less is more . Probably I am a grumpy old man tho !. So , in conclusion, bring on the archive .I cannot wait !
Luther made his England debut 39 years ago today ! Think he got a hat trick . https://mobile.twitter.com/WatfordFC/status/1448181961810399236
His hattrick was against Luxembourg I think, and if I recollect correctly the final score was 9-0 (or 9-1)?
I think the hat trick was in his full debut. Pretty sure he came on as a sub in at least one earlier game, but not certain.
The night Doyley scored ! https://mobile.twitter.com/WatfordF...io/iframe/twitter.min.html1468165893381308420
Anyone remember this game from today in 1989? https://mobile.twitter.com/WatfordFC/status/1471510441377427470
Do you guys remember this horror show in the cup against non-leagues Northwich... Worst ever FA defeat? (Even ahead of that final..) I suspect the team got quite a bit of stick but then least there wasn't social media back then from their point of view! https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/20028878.memories-watfords-fa-cup-defeat-northwich-victoria/
I well remember it happening but fortunately it was just before I started going to away games in earnest, so I wasn’t there. Some fool in the WO comments section is claiming that it was the last time Watford played away to a non-league team in the Cup. What about Woking in 2019, mate?
I was there , I went with my mates on a half full coach as most others went on the football special or made their own way. We were 13/14 years old at the time and can you imagine 13/14 year olds going away unaccompanied these days ?. On the way we passed by a bunch of Crystal Palace coaches and as we had beaten them in the League cup that season we gave them the international sign of excellence. Anywho the coach stopped at a services just before the M6 turn off for Northwich and if you were northbound you had to cross the bridge to the services. Much to our delight on the way back across the bridge we encountered the Palace fans who had also stopped off and I still have the bruises to this day!!.
A crazy goal feast on a Tuesday night in Peterborough. https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/s...rds-relegation-six-pointer-peterborough-1994/
That team was pretty awful, even compared to the current lot, but what a great night that was to be a Watford fan.
Perry Digweed. The worst keeper we’ve had I living memory ? Worse even than Perry Suckling and Simon Shepherd…
Incredible scenes in the away end…and in the car park afterwards that took about 3 hours to get out of
Does Gary Plumley count? Just Googled him out of curiosity and this came up from a few years back: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/fairytale-saw-goalkeeper-end-career-11068134
Probably a bit harsh to include him ! Remember it well. One of God’s poorer decisions. He had a nightmare.
A reminder of our high water mark under the Pozzos.....see 5 mins of highlights near the top of the article......happy days. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61098592
