In recent issues of this esteemed organ the impression may have been given by several contributors that Troy is a fat useless lump with the turning circle of a oil tanker captained by Chris Iwelumo

With his two penalties blasted straight at the novocastrian keeper that have put us at 34 points - and near certain safety, nothing could be further from the truth. You are a true Watford legend (albeit with a face like a bashed in potato)

He's a fat useless oil tanker of a player who can strike a ball really really hard straight down the middle

What I don't understand is how goalkeepers don't know where its going because 20,000 watford fans all do

Though I'll give him that he can handle pressure in a way England players in world cups haven't

To lightly counter that, his penalty at the Vic against Spuds was to the side wasn't it? It was saved quite well. Maybe that miss changed his mindset to the middle.

Dive and you've got nothign to lose as a keeper.

Stay still you'll concede and look like and idiot, but more importantly you risk taking a hit in the face and breaking a nose from one of Deeneys pens

Caught in two minds that day between sidefooting it into the corner and blasting it down the middle, worst of both worlds

I'll give Dubravka a bit of credit, the first one he didn't get particularly close to it, but he knew what was coming for the second one, just had far too much power on it

Going to be controversial here and say he handled the pressure well, of course he did. But was there more or less pressure with no crowd?

The next one he gets he should just panenka it. Straight down the middle but it might shut everyone up.

"Striker" bangs ball into net from 12 yards. Does nothing in open play (except miss an easy chance).

    Truly spectacular. All is forgiven.

Deeney missed two absolute sitters today and very nearly had the 2nd penalty saved, but thankfully two out of the four open goals he had went in from the spot, so thank **** for that o_O phew!!!

I think once the thick PL keepers realise that he always puts the pens down the middle, his goals may dry up. I still like him as he gives his all (most of the time). But we do need to improve the quality. He shouldn’t be the opening batsman anymore (currently watching the cricket)

His miss could have cost us the game. Thanks for the memories Troy, you're a club legend but it's the end of the yellow brick road.

Opened this thread expecting to read an apology from Troy for coming back so unfit.

    I was disappointed.

Hardly a player celebrated the first with him. He had to go to the subs for a cuddle.

Something amiss with this team for sure.

    However.....

Stuff them all. Troy has gone out on his shield for this team and as always delivered when it mattered.

122 goals is something quite remarkable really for a player written off every couple of weeks (me being one of the worst)

Let’s not get carried away. He scored two penalties which is the absolute minimum requirement we should be expecting of him. He did well to handle the pressure, but if he can’t score penalties then it would’ve raised even more questions about why he was actually in the team.

Troy also doesn’t miss the target with penalties. He never goes any wear near the corners for that to ever be conceivable risk. So although he handled the pressure well, his penalties are never much about what he does but about what the keeper does.

I’m thankful for him tucking them away, but I’m unsure what else our expectation should be?

He can’t win. Got people criticising his penalties now even though they went in. He may well be past his best but give the guy a little bit of credit

I’m not criticising his penalties, I’m just stating fact. Have you ever watched one of his penalties?

He’s a striker and our penalty taker. Scoring penalties is the minimum expectation of him. He can’t buy a goal from open play so if he can’t score from 12 yards then the game really is up.

When Deeney plays he's not perfect or effective in every game.

But when he's out injured I don't remember us exactly doing great in his absence.

Cliff Holton, late of this Parish, scored (this is memory only) I think 20 penalties in a row before the record was marred when he struck the bar with the second of the game against Reading. He was a big man and hit them all very very hard. The joke at the time was that, if the goalie was foolish enough to get in the way, he would end up in the back of the net with the ball. If I was the coach I'd order my penalty takers to hit it hard or lose the job. Watch the semi-final pen against Wolves: The keeper nearly gets it right, but the ball is travelling so fast he simply cannot adjust in time to make the save.
Incidentally, I would love to know just how rapidly those two yesterday were moving. My guess would be 70+ mph.
Having said that, I do think that Deeney has lost a lot of confidence, despite his laudable stand-up-straight attitude; and that is why he hits them down the middle - he's afraid to miss.

I have also been critical of Deeney..... however to be fair until yesterday I didn’t know he was carrying a knee injury and was doing all he can to play..... you can’t say he doesn’t care and isn’t committed and you can’t ask for more than that.

Perhaps that's because, until recently, when Troy was injured his replacement was Andre Gray

I'm as guilty as any for being unfair to him, the root of the problem is he doesn't suit a lone central striker role ie our 433. In a 442, or as yesterday 2nd half we got players around him, he's a much better fit. When we are defending deep and counter attacking he isn't a good fit. I'd like to see him used more selectively in the right games in the right way.

Against city I'd like to see Sarr and Welbeck up top in a low block 442.

He did nothing else all game. Was a passenger in the first half, and a hindrance a lot of the time losing the ball in decent areas, not winning any headers or "bullying" defenders, and actually did a decent clearance for Newcastle at one point.

Perhaps if we could copy the NFL and bring in a kicker just to kick the penalties then he's useful.

So not sure an apology is really warranted.

Yes, I noticed that. Something amiss.

However, he has most certainly not always delivered when it mattered. He even missed his penalty against Spurs and it probably cost us 2 points. His performances have, apart from one or two games this season, been woeful. Every one of those games mattered.

So when Deeney plays badly (which he's admitted he has been recently) you get his fan club saying 'it's a team game, they're all playing badly so why are we picking on him', but when he scores two penalties it's all 'Hurrah for Troy!'?

Well done Troy for Kiko taking it past two players in the area before being taken out. Well done Troy for Sarr turning his man and being dragged down after a Kiko throw. To be honest, I've been critical of Kiko since the restart but I think I owe him an apology, not Troy.

Yes, Deeney played better yesterday and showed a lot more energy and movement, but he still missed two sitters and didn't roll Sarr in for a simple 1-on-1 in the centre of the goal. Yesterday his performance was at an acceptable level, but it wasn't great and he's not the messiah (he's a very naughty boy).
