The BBC’s website has a Scottish news section and a Scottish Politics section. I’m sure there are more critical articles there.

But if there are proportionately less that also reflects on there being less criticism and attention to report. Moreover the Scottish Government simply doesn’t have all the powers that the UK Government has.

And most importantly, Sturgeon has her flaws, but generally seems a rational, coherent person, while Boris is a chaotic, lazy oaf. That may explain it.

Yesterday Johnson mistakingly said Covid-19 was in the water supply and had to issue a correction.

Today Chancellor Sunak began his bid to be the next PM.

Given the way Sunak conducted himself in March when he announced the furlough scheme you could see this person is definitely PM material.

Yes, he's been good. Although it is always easier given out £bn's rather than taking them away.

Apparently, eight people died while attempting to put their trousers on last last year. Which means people aged 19 and under are about as likely to die from COVID-19 as they are from putting on their trousers.

My wife absolutely loves Sunak as she is enjoying sitting in the garden on full pay - but didn’t know who he was until it was announced that the furlough scheme is being extended

  9. Great person to quote, by the way.

I like Lloyds post but that video isn't a great watch is it.

  15. I think the fact that you managed to find this video in the first place then sit through nearly three minutes of not very interesting, or funny, tedium before stumbling upon his 'hilarious' bon mot says more about your judgement and leanings than about my perfectly functioning sense of humour.

This 'apparent success', as Johnson called it, now stands at 50,000+ deaths. Brilliant work.

But hey, let's open up the housing market again to drown that figure out.

    Fifty. Thousand. Dead.

And we've had 50% on top of the average since mid-March. That's 150,000 dead in total.

An EXTRA 50,000 dead in a 2 month period.

Anyone still skeptical about the impact of Covid should watch the two part BBC documentary filmed at the RoyalFree Hospital (and its sister hospital in Barnet) from the beginning of lockdown.

No need to. I have much better blow by blow account from another nearby hospital trust. The two hospitals you quote that were featured have escaped comparatively lightly with far fewer numbers of patients and casualties.

    Odd comment.

Plus you do realise a significant proportion of the 50,000 will have been killed by the lockdown?

It will be interesting to see what the inevitable public enquiry into this concludes. It will surely have to address the figure of excess deaths not attributed to Covid and try to conclude whether undiagnosed Covid caused most of them and how many died as an unintended consequence of lockdown. Whatever the result it is bound to conclude that the NHS must be able to provide generalist care during such a crisis and that people must have confidence in that.

Agreed. You can never a trust a man that can't put up and then effectively load a shelf.

As soon as Mr. Homebase turns up this morning with some brackets it's my DIY furlough task of the day. I aspire to one day own a book to put on the shelving though.

  31. He says without any evidence whatsoever. What would be a significant proportion? Even a laughable stab at 20% would mean that 40,000 are directly Covid 19 related - and the government were saying 20,000 would be a good result. Are you saying that fewer than 40,000 would have died without lockdown measures?

FWIW this morning's "More or Less" on spoke at length about about R[sub]0[/sub] and regional variations in the UK. They also looked at the latest "News" (comments abut data from non-peer reviewed publications) on vitamin D and C19 - I strongly urge all 'non-honkey' 'orns to have a listen to it.

Actually I've been enjoying the lockdown (thanks in part to Oddbins' excellent home delivery service) and am all in favour of it continuing. But if I had a mortgage and/or worked in aviation, hospitality, tourism, retail etc etc I might be less sanguine about it

  34. A nice half inch baton glued and screwed along the underside front, back and side edges does the job nicely. In engineering terms it increases the section modulus (Z) in bending. Not to be confused with the 1980s definition of bending which is something entirely different and not PC. You can route a nice pattern along the front edge. Lick of paint. Beautiful job.

Just finished a major plumbing DIY job as my sister's kitchen sink connections sprung several leaks flooding her kitchen - she didn't have a stopcock in the house so had to shut the mains down. Two plumbers quoted £600 & £700 for the job - nice work if you can get it.

Bought a new cabinet base unit - the existing one sagged from water damage, new compression tap connectors, 3m of copper pipe, a stopcock, compression tees and connectors, jointing compound, pipe cutter and a pipe bender.

Replaced all the damaged connectors and new piping, replaced the old washing machine inlet connector and fitted a stopcock so I don't have to turn off the street mains - all for £150 (base unit and pipe bender were £100 total).

No more leaks and a new base unit fitted - all done by studying You Tube videos - the sense of achievement was amazing.

Only problem now is I've got nothing to do...so I'm walking round her house breaking things so I can fix them.
