I’d agree they would, but aren’t the amounts being touted around that clubs could forfeit if the season isn’t completed pretty sizeable as well? I would’ve though a quarter of a seasons lost advertising income would be less than the £30m figure being quoted, as what clubs would potentially lose if there is no restart. Could be wrong of course, and the advertisers may view a few lost games as the whole contract being voided.

Hilarious though that the Burnley bloke came on here claiming the the moral high ground, because our actions could cost his club money though.

Anything other than completing the season as it started will have some sort of advantage or disadvantage for at least one party involved. Even playing behind closed doors it could be argued could be to the detriment of the home side. I think that might well be the extent of concessions made unilaterally. Anything else may prompt a legal challenge from those aggrieved.

Indeed. It's just a lawsuit waiting to happen unless the PL guarantee the relegated sides the same revenue.

For how many years, on the basis that they may have not been relegated for the next 5+ years ?

Does he have much of of a say ?

Or presume it's up to the Government.I

Well any club who believes they would have stayed up had the season finished would reject being treated the same as a club that had been genuinely relegated ?

Not if they're going to be renumerated as if they weren't relegated.

Forgive my ignorance but what real difference does TV exposure make to revenue? Or is it just a ruse by advertising execs to justify their overpaid salaries for their overrated jobs?

Does seeing the Sports Direct stadium on TV cause a rush of customers to their website or shops? Most football fans only know it as St. James Park anyway. King Power? I really haven't got a clue what they sell. As for Emirates, flights to the Middle East are a bit niche I would guess. Is the extra gain measurable? Are people really that gullible to be influenced into buying something because they saw a ground named after a brand?I've seen those annoying ' where did you first hear of company?' feedback questions, but I can't recall seeing 'I saw it on telly whilst watching the footy' as an option.

In any case, most people have lost out to the virus in some way or other. I presume these three companies have got enough money sloshing around in their coffers (or their multi-millionaires have) to 'take the (tiny) hit' without too many problems. I'd tell them to get over themselves, but what do I know?!

Police have agreed to home and away grounds now.

Probably because Boris has said people drive where they like now .

So playing at neutral venues aren't that safety net they probably thought it might be.

No surprises that Rose is one of the few piping up though - one of the laziest, whiniest footballers around.

We'd just need Ozil throwing a strop next to seal the deal.

Were Holebas still actually playing for us no doubt he'd be mouthing off as well.

I'm open to suggestions of who else would complete the 'Stroppiest Premier League XI'.

That’s kind of a separate issue to why certain clubs are objecting to the neutral venues though. If you’re any those advertisers and you’ve paid the club £X million on the basis of a certain amount of TV games, you’re entitled to kick up a fuss and ask for some or all of your money back if you’re not going to get the exposure you paid for.

Whether that exposure is actually worth it in the first place as you raise is a separate issue, but they’re entitled to at least try and get what they paid for just like the PL are.

I'm sure there is some measurable benefit to them gained through brand awareness, even at a subconscious level, otherwise it wouldn't continually happen and have money spent on it year after year

What you’re really asking here is: ‘Does advertising work?’. Most people, including me, think it doesn’t make them buy stuff but it must do really, otherwise all those companies would save the huge amount of money they spend on it.

If this is true (and so far I’ve only seen it on the Daily Mail website) then that’s a hurdle jumped. However, the next one is going to be convincing players and healthcare professionals that it’s safe to. That might be even trickier when there are reports of positive tests still occurring within the game.

I agree with @lowerrous that I suspect all eyes will be on the Bundesliga.

Other reports around today that the Championship teams could be denied if they void their season but the PL completes. If the EFL do PPG and declare final positions, then it’s suggested the PL teams could vote to keep them out as they believe it would be unfair to accept them over relegated clubs who played to a finish.

I think a lot of advertising at football grounds etc is more about ‘branding’ and being associated with football than it is about pushing what they actually sell.

yeah I’m the same. But I imagine If Coke unilaterally decided to stop all advertising they would become the equivalent of Wimpy burger within 5 years and other cola brands would dominate?

So much of it happens at a subconscious level, we all like to think we can’t be sold to by advertising, but we are all the time without realising. It’s not necessarily always directly advertising to you either. It’s not like you’ll see sports direct sponsors Newcastle and their ground so you would go “oh I’ll buy something from them” it’s brand awareness and keeping them in people’s consciousness and just aware they even exist. Months later you might sit down to buy something and go on their website without even thinking.

Who owns the TV rights to the EPL , is it the FA or the EPL ?

Presumably the contract with sky /bt is with the EPL or FA not the individual clubs , I would Imagine sky are pushing for the league to be completed or refunds issued and wouldn’t surprise me if they were pushing promotion / relegation to give the matches some purposes (pure speculation) .

I thought that TV money was distributed to clubs based on how many games they had televised which means that teams with the most to lose would be the big teams , I also thought this happened at the end of the season (I guess distributed over the next season).

essentially I wonder if the real problem here is that the FA or EPL cream of a lot of TV money and may go bust if we don’t complete the season

I can’t find it on SSN?
It says some clubs have meeting arranged this week with local forces in the hope that they might agree for their stadiums to be used. But SSN stress the decision can’t be taken on a local scale anyway and needs to be a national police decision which local forces put into action.

The talks as laid out above aren’t until later this week so not sure how these media outlets could claim any sort of agreement.

It’s the facility fee part that directly relates to the televised games. Last season Huddersfield earned about £12m in facility fees and Liverpool £33m. I think it’s about £1.5m per televised game. With 9 rounds left how much could one team realistically feature, four times maybe? So maybe a maximum of £6m for the most featured club. The rest of the money is made up of prize money which is just a function of league position and not directly earned though being televised. Of course it’s got to come from somewhere though, and if Sky can’t televise the games and get some subscriptions back then as far as they’re concerned there is a bit of a financial black hole either way. The FA have a veto on any rule changes that the PL want to make, my feeling is it’s not necessarily that they get money directly from the PL but money does filter down the leagues from the television deal so it will likely have a domino effect of the renaming games can’t be televised with everyone in the chain potentially losing money to some degree. Therefore they’re using the threat of this veto to try and make sure football is resumed at all costs to avoid that scenario.

What isn’t clear to me is how that works if the league cannot be finished. Voiding the season is not a rule change, and if the premier league and the fa didn't have the foresight to write a process into their rules for a season that can’t be finished, then how can the FA veto anything that isn’t legislated for? They wouldn’t be going against any rules because the rules don’t exist, they wouldn’t be changing rules which is what they would be able to veto.

That's the SSN article I saw - the quotes from Mark Roberts within it sounded promising with regards to the national force giving the PL the green light should the PL provide enough additional security.

I'm not sure Sky will chase the money that hard because they desperately need the football as it generates so much revenue for them and will not want to jeopardise that in future years. I suspect the foreign companies will be after refunds though

Or they’ll be more inclined to agree a deal to chuck the games into next year and alter the package. Realistically without the football Sky are pretty ****ed. Having the football enables them to pacakage it with their other grossly overpriced packages, which are now inferior and a lot more expensive than the competition. Take the football away and you’re basically paying a huge premium for a nice EPG and hassle free multiroom (if you’ve got sky Q) With on demand and streaming even the box no longer justifies paying over the odds anymore.
