The Government was still pivoting around it’s doomed ‘herd immunity’ strategy (for want of a better word). It was the following weekend that football was postponed, but not by the Government.

 

I have looked into this and the "herd immunity" thing appears to have been an (extremely unhelpful) off the cuff remark by Bojo, rather than official policy. Bear in mind that behind the scenes, actual scientist help guide policy, but on the mic, Bojo can chat whatever nonsense comes to his unguarded lips.

 

Although looking for a link to the article I found previously (in a highly Tory critical publication) it seems to not be cut and dried. I just didn't want to believe that anyone could have thought that would work, apart from the blond mouthpiece.

To be fair, the Chief Scientific Officer was eulogising about the merits of Herd Immunity on Sky News the day after Boris Johnson made his comment. I think the way Patrick Vallance worded it was unfortunate as that made it sound like it was the policy that the Government were pursing.

I don't think the Govt actually ever decided that was the route to go down. But they didn't discount it quickly enough and that sadly has left us chasing our tails.

When this is all over and the inevitable (huge) inquest starts, that will be brought up. But the speed at which we are testing etc and the scandal around the lack of PPE equipment will be the overriding thing I suspect. It will come out in the wash that some catastrophic errors have been made in preparation for this in my opinion.

Boris Johnson perhaps saw this as his 'Churchillian' moment - I suspect he's got that very wrong in the long haul.

 

That's the key part - vaccines. By immunising a vast majority of a population, you prevent diseases spreading. I'm not aware of it being used in such a cavalier, weed out the weak of the population and hope for the best type strategy anywhere in the past.

1. Herd Immunity was never the strategy of the government, it is a potential consequence of a strategy which may help prevent further outbreaks.

The concept floated initially wasn't to weed out the weak - it was to choose just the right moment to put them into protective isolation for their own good for 12-16 weeks, while the rest of us got on with catching the thing and building immunity as a by product.

I still broadly favour that approach, as I think we've rushed into an equally imperfect plan with no defined exit strategy in place. @Moose and a couple of others have made some good counterpoints but it just comes down to how you perceive risk and opportunity I think. What I will concede is we probably didn't have the necessary resources in place (both to feed/care for the vulnerable folk forced into isolation and to treat the % of otherwise healthy people hospitalised) to take the bolder approach, nor the national will to pull it off properly.

You can see how many cases each region has on here. My area has had about 70 cases so maybe 2-3 deaths. I don’t think many undertakers will be noticing that.

 

I know it's difficult but you have to force yourselves to drink. I know it sounds counter-intuitive and stoopid but (neat) water's a pretty **** rehydrating agent - it literally 'flushes through your system'. All the dissolved stuff in the diluted pop/juice/tea/oral rehydration salts 'keep the fluid' in your digestive tract for longer so you can actually absorb more water.

The choice is 'drink' or get your fluids via 'route 2':

Pretty difficult I think to draw solid conclusions from any one day of data.

 

Sorry, it wasn't meant to sound like a criticism! Just that as you say, people can be asymptomatic and pass it on due to the nature of the virus. So I just wasn't sure how you could categorically say they haven't had it just due to one of them testing negative. I'm sure you are right in saying what you say however.

The writer acknowledges that his suggestion of every household receiving and returning self sample nasal and throat swabs in bar coded tubes pre printed with names/dob would result in some inaccuracies but would quarantine infected households earlier and reduce the infection rate.

Puts a lot of pressure on the laboratories and postal system however as well as having enough reagents

But it seems to present a form of exit strategy as currently we seem to seeking the perfect solution whilst the economy tanks

Not only have we got Covid-19 news headlines for the next 5 years, we've got to both look & listen to that Michael Gove throughout that whole time too. All this & we have not even scratched the surface of Brexit either.

The thought of all this alone has made me seriously think about moving us out of the UK for a better life.

No he wasn't. He was responding to the critical political flack that the government had suffered about their past decisions, particularly on testing. He explained the reasons, and took responsibility for the major decision that the testing resource they had, should be concentrated on the patients, rather than the NHS staff. That may be a negative in some peoples eyes, we shall see, but at least he owned up to it.

When people throw criticism at the government, many of them politically motivated, a government that needs to be trusted when they are implementing tough measures, has to defend those decisions.

Seen enough of this whole Tory ensemble, to make a personal assessment, that they are an accident waiting to happen. Full of backstabbers 80's style. The only one with any credibility is the kid chancellor.

Seriously thinking about putting the house on the market, with all this money that's going to be around. Could be the best time to break for the border.
