He's so nice, if he thinks you're a good team, he'll just stand and admire you as the goals rain past him.

The only games that bizarre post could refer to would be the last two games against Man City, and even there it's pretty unfair - we were just totally outclassed for the most part.

And even then he didn’t play in one of them.

He's so nice he stops trying when he doesn't like the manager.

To be fair, I really really like the guy. He’s a credit to our club.
But the post isn’t that bizarre - Foster’s interview after losing 8-0 was poor. Some fans felt embarrassed and we didn’t want to hear about how great some City players were etc and watch our player trying to get their shirts, regardless of the good cause it was for. That can be done in the tunnel. I know nothing was meant by it - but I’d hope they’d pick their comments and actions a bit more wisely should it occur again.

We seem to have quite a few bitter cynical fans. Ben Foster acted with decency and kindness to a young fan who has leukemia and yet some of you want to bring up unrelated incidents which bear no relation to this story. Can you please think before you post.

I don’t think anyone is being offensive?

And no one has said a bad word about what he did on Saturday for the young fan. Not everything needs to be censored.

I am not trying to censor anyone. If you want to discuss Ben Fosters comments after we lost at Manchester City back in August/September I suggest you open a new thread. This thread is about Ben helping a young supporter with leukemia. Personally I think Ben is a credit to the club and should be thanked. If you want to berate him for something else then perhaps you should do so in another thread.

So we have loads of different threads for every single thing a player does?
No one is ‘berating’ him. Someone made a point and was told it was bizarre. I merely pointed out why it wasn’t bizarre.

He may not have answered some questions how you liked, but that doesn’t mean he was sitting back and admiring Man City and not trying. Which is what the original message implies he does against teams he thinks are good.

I am really not having a go at you and at #8 you said you liked the guy. The header for this thread was "Nice article about our Ben". Why is Man City even mentioned in an thread about him being a nice guy.

Perhaps the best way to answer then is to say what a fantastic job he has done this season. He definitely saved us points against Sheffield United and Wolves to name just two games in which he has done well. Absolutely nothing to do with his kind and generous gesture on Saturday but as we are discussing all things related to Ben Foster I think he should be praised for the number of great games he has played this season. He even set up the third goal on Saturday.

He literally alluded in the interview after the game that they were admiring their opponents. If you’re giving your all, you don’t do that.

Anyway, this is digressing. That day is literally a tiny footnote in his otherwise excellent and storied association with the club. And I personally think he would perhaps change the words he used that day given the opportunity.

I don’t disagree with any of that. And my original response was only to reply to a comment that was made.

As for thoughts on him, I’m proud to have him associated with the club. Perhaps sometimes he’s too honest for his own good given what he said that day post-game and also what he said on TalkSport this week. But give me that over generic sound bytes from players any day. He’s undoubtedly a very very decent guy, and having lost a child myself last year, the way he’s gone above and beyond for young Molly is brilliant to see.

Just don’t swap shirts with players on the pitch after losing 8-0!

And yet there are other interviews (maybe the same one I don’t know) where he literally stated he was trying to influence the team and help them get out of the rut in that game.

Clearly the team didn’t give their all in that game, regardless of the quality of the opponent, and left Foster in an impossible position. And if it is ‘they’, then it is the team not him (can’t be bothered to check)

I guess I just didn’t like the unconstructive criticism (not from you) of someone who has been one of our best players this season. We could swap him for De Gea, and we’d probably already almost be down by now. Foster is joint 21st for errors leading to goal this season (just 1) https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/error_lead_to_goal.

He admitted to not trying because he didn't like QSF tactics. That says all you need to know about his character and the respect he has for the fans who pay to watch him. Possibly including this kid.

Imagine how many points we'd have if he had given 100% in every match.

The same number of points we have now I’d imagine.

I would be interested in the source of the interview you mention as I don’t remember that.

I'm not sure, someone mentioned it in the other ben foster thread.

Don't get me wrong though, his treatment of molly is first class.

He said on the TalkSport this week that the ‘players downed tools’. Those were the words he used. It’s debated what he meant by that elsewhere - I suspect he meant that the players were frustrated with QSF tactics etc and some acted accordingly. But it’s not a great choice of words to use to endear yourself or your teammates to the fans. Easily said and brushed over when you’ve just beaten Liverpool - I suspect it would be a bigger issue for fans if it had been said after losing 0-3 to Burnley under Flores.

But Ben Foster isn’t someone who needs to endear himself any further. He’s clearly a nice guy who buys into the club and community and has a very decent set of values and morals.

Anyway, as someone quite rightly said, this thread should really be about the deed in the subject heading.

I heard the interview and actually he was asked whether the players had ‘downed tools’ earlier in the season. In reply he said he thought subconsciously they had. It wasn’t his own choice of words and he certainly didn’t mean the players deliberately stopped trying in order to get rid of the manager.

Okay fair enough. He didn’t choose the words. But it’s still naive to say they did.
If I ‘subconsciously’ stop putting the effort in at work and I admit as much, I shouldn’t get a free pass just because it wasn’t deliberate. Not trying is not trying no?
