Better than I thought it was going to be. I heard lots of stories about being boxed in etc. but I didn't have any problems. Same with the finish, I heard all sorts about crowds but I got on a bus and was back in the centre of Newcastle within 35 mins. The course was a bit dull but I suppose with that number of people running it can't be on anything but dual carriageways. The climb at the end was a *******!

Managed my first ever 10k today. Might not sound like a big deal to regular runners, but 8 weeks ago i'd never run further than 5k and that was 8 years ago. Took me 1 hour 14 mins, which is slow, but just happy I finished it. Any tips to improve speeds?

Excellent work. In terms of time, it's just at a matter of getting more runs of a similar distance under your belt. I think the first one I did was 1 hour 2 mins and now I do it in about 50 minutes.

Unless you're over 40, in which case, you've had it.

As RP says, more running is the key. Regular runs, nice and easy if necessary, sensible diet, listen to your body.

Good going. I’d suggest adding some intervals to your runs. Hill intervals if you want to punish yourself. Shorter distance - maybe up to 5 or 6km - but seems to help with overall speed even over longer distances.

So just over a year after starting this running lark I did the local parkrun in a little over 24 minutes today which smashed my PB. I started near the front so no trying to get around people but it wasn't any fun being overtaken almost constantly. I also enjoyed it a lot less than starting near the back and working through. I think I'll have a few easy parkruns over the next few weeks, might even go into tourist mode and visit a few others.

Anyone doing the Moor Park 10K next Sunday?

Anyone going for the London Marathon this year?

Having only ran my first 10k back in May of last year, and proper half marathon a month ago or so, I’m a little apprehensive especially with a knee ligament injury picked up in November which only passed in January.

Have managed to reach 16.5 miles so far, which isn’t too bad for a fat lad who had previously weighed a hefty 19.5 stone back in October.

Running it for charity, in memory of recently lost family, and also to prove something to myself of course... so as long as I can complete it and in a respectable time that’ll be something.

First ever half marathon today. Hillingdon Half. No headphones allowed so it's gonna be boring as hell.

Enjoy. I did the great north run without headphones, which was an unusual experience, but the crowds more than made up for it. I’m sure the people of Hillingdon will turn out similarly en masse to cheer you on.

Best of luck Moogus, ran the Watford one as my first a few weeks ago, again no headphones allowed so was dull except for between your ears for that amount of time.

    Stay safe out there.

I was aiming for 2 hour 15, but I just found it harder and harder as the distance went by. I need more training to be able to maintain clost to 10k Pace for that second half.

My legs were ruined by the end.

I'm now torn between improving on that and getting another half in the diary or, just sacking it off and putting my focus back onto strength training, which I've always been more suited to.

I desperately need to do some core strength training to help my running but I can't seem to get a circuit explained to me in plain English that I can then go and implement in a gym. Any ideas?

I think you can follow plans & it feels like your in a job. Best advice I would say is enjoy & mix things up. If you want to get quicker there are plenty of different run options which help i.e track runs, long runs, trail runs, fartlek, speed, slow heart rate etc.

Most races now say you shouldn't wear headphones, but I still always wear them. They've never done anything about it.

It's expensive, but I now do reformer pilates. Improves core, flexibility and protects you from injury better than anything else I've tried.

I've never done one on non closed roads before. To be fair, it was pretty difficult to keep track of the route and cross some of the roads around Hillingdon as it was. I might've got run over if not. Uxbridge/Hillingdon is full of utter shitbags who think their dog walking or driving to get the Mail on Sunday is more important than you struggling to finish a run when your legs are in agony and don't give way.

you can probably download a 20 min core strengthening app from Play/Appstore which will guide you through a simple workout.

I have a 20min HIIT workout app which does for a good boost when I don't have time to get to the gym.

Someone who knows about running told me to buy new running shoes after 350-400 miles. Mine have done over 500 miles now and I'm starting to get leg niggles so wondering if that's true.

So where to buy running shoes without breaking the bank? Any advice welcome.

New shoes can certainly be the answer to pains that may crop up. I tend to keep mine for no more than 500 miles.

I have always gone to Sweatshop for mine. Their service has gone backwards since they became part of the Mike Ashley empire but you can still get checked out to see what you are getting. My normal course of action is to go their, get sorted and choose what I want...and then go home to do some research as to where you can buy them from at a cheaper price. Three out of my last four pairs have ended up coming from Sweatshop anyway, but their online deals seem to be better.

We have a fab specialist shop in Norwich. I’ve always had ASICS but they steered me onto brookes which are the bees knees, a bit pricey but worth every penny

Well just today I was told the washing machine needs replacing, so a couple of chocolate buttons and a smartie.

Probably stretch to £75 at the moment.

So I use several different sites, as mentioned above sportshoes.com, sweatshop.com, as well as wiggle.co.uk, prodirectrunning.com and runnersneed.com. It helps a lot if you know what your gait is when buying online. Instead of shoes, but general running/sport items I go to Decathlon, this is for foam rollers, torches, gloves ect.

Thanks for the recommendations. Used sweatshop.com in the end as it was by far the easiest to navigate and drill down into particular shoes. Even the Mrs got in on the act.

I ran Berko half a couple of weeks ago, that’s a hard course. I’m thoroughly looking forward to a half I have next weekend in the Peak District - the Monsal trail half starting at Bakewell station. I’ve wanted to do it for a couple of years but the dates didn’t work so I’m praying it doesn’t get canned.

I’ve also booked to do F*rth half in May which is currently looking unlikely.
