I do like his comments on it: "it makes him happy."

What more reason do you need to humour someone? Top gent.

    Where's Nigel?

Somewhere in the crowd is Big Nige enjoying Deeney's goal at Bournemouth.

We're going to end up with fans bringing coconuts to matches aren't we? It's going to be the vegetable crisis all over again.

Yeah, when I watch or attend a match as a neutral, I usually route for one team, so in that sense I'm not really watching it as a neutral. For instance, I bought a ticket at Cambridge for the 2009 Conference play-off final featuring Cambridge and Torquay, and sat in the Cambridge section, and was quite disappointed when they didn't win (it was my first trip to the new Wembley, and like with Watford, it's an OK experience if the team you want to win does, and a pretty miserable one if it doesn't).

Weirdly the same year, I went to the Conference South play-off final with Hampton & Richmond and Hayes & Yeading at the Beveree Stadium wanting Hayes to win (it helped that even during big games there's no segregation there). But nine years later, I went back to the same ground for the same kind of fixture where Hampton were playing Braintree, and I wanted the home team to win. Fickle fan me...;)

As I've declared before, I lived in nth London til the age of 8 and supported the Arse up to that point. All the kids in the street did and my dad was a spurs fan so it made perfect sense. They won the FA cup to clinch the double in 1971 and it was live on the TV during my 8th birthday party. Moved to watford and they became my little local club that I went to watch by 1977 with the Arse still my big club. That all changed of course as we moved up through the divisions but they are still my second favourite club. Also have soft spots for Lincoln (from pre GT joining Watford as they were scoring so many goals as they hammered every team they faced under GT) ....and sadly Bury.

I don't get how anyone can like Arsenal. Grudging respect during the Henry years was the most form me, but then my animosity towards them was hardened during the 80s when they had that horrible, moany (and not very good) team under George Graham. I was happy with their decline in the latter Wenger period, but the thing I resent them for most at the moment is the hateful corporate flags they pay people to wave behind the goal when they score. Irrational, I know.

Here are a couple of graphs to whet our appetite before the game tomorrow. NB my data only starts from the 1950s, and I’m ok double checking some of it.

The first graph shows that Pearson has the joint second best start of any Watford manager after 6 games with 13 points. Behind GT of course, and level with Neil McBain in 56/57. McBain went on to beat Aldershot in his next game, it also interestingly included a win and a draw against Brighton which is strange to play the same team so close together at the start of the season. GT lost his next game, against Barnsley in what was the first team to stop Watford scoring under GT.

The second shows that if Pearson were to be sacked tonight due to some family misdemeanour, he would finish as the manager with the best average points per game ever. Let’s see how long this remains to be the case...

Good work David, some interesting stuff here. Presumably some of the more historical names would have been when it was two points for a win, is this actual or have you adjusted for this?

Actually I’ve spotted some errors in the second graph that I need to sort out. But it assumes 3 points for a win.

Interesting to see just how well some of our managers did even though they had to make do with shirt button budget eg Perryman, Harrison, Rogers, Jackett, and how badly useless cahunts like Mazzarri did.

And then there's the great turd himself Bassett...

Purely based on where I lived as young kid but TBF the football they played in the early Wenger years was beautiful. Ugly before then and now they are just awful. Lose Aubang and Lacaz and they will genuinely be bottom 6 contenders.

We mustn't forget what a fantastic job David De Gea did to help kick start our season, if he didn't have gloves made from jelly we might not be where we are today

If we survive which I now think we will, I hope more than anything he’d actually want to stay. We’d be mad not to want him to, but he might actually end up with better offers based on what he has already done/theoretically would’ve gone on to do with us. It’s not like we as a club deserve any sort of loyalty from managers. If he did stay on then I really think given a full pre season and some of his own signings we could go on to do something really special.

Even if things go wrong and we go down, I'd prefer to have Pearson in place for next season particularly as he has won the Championship before. Otherwise I hope that as soon as safety is all but assured that they at least offer him a longer permanent deal.

I believe we have an option of a further year, so I read that we can extend if we wish to, unless he commits an criminal act we would be mad not to.

We have had too many Carlos Kickaballs Managing/coaching us in recent years, it can’t be coincidence that three of our most successful Managers in recent years have been English, G.T., Boothroyd, and now Pearson!
