I always get a kick out of someone whining about millennials to me. Their faces after I tell them I am one are inevitably hilarious.

It's incredible how many people don't know the generation "millennial" refers to.

 

You’re surprised that people use a term to cast a stereotype without really knowing what it means? I think you’re giving people in general, far too much credit.

 

I think there’s a few people born in the early 80’s who use the phrase to insult someone and don’t realise that they’re actually millennials.

The current batch of youngsters, generation Z, are being labelled Centennials.

 

No idea which group any of the terms centennial, millennials, or Generation Z describe. No one I know has used one of these terms in conversation with me and I have no plans to, for obvious reasons.

I’ve never really been in or around the 1881 for a length of time at games - perhaps for anyone who has, can you tell me - is there a bit of a culture of ‘we create the atmosphere and us alone’?

From what I read, the leaders of it seem to want to be inclusive and encouraging of the whole ground to be ‘1881’ etc - but do you think there’s an element of people within it who want to keep it secular? And know that if it really took off, with the atmosphere amazing each week, that the need for them as a singular group is less? Would there be an attitude of them being threatened by being ‘too big’?

I liked the idea of them to begin with and still like that the premise is to create a better atmosphere for everyone. And it’s obvious that won’t please everyone as some just like to go to the game and do as they’ve always done as a matter of routine.

The worst ones are the over 50s who act like an angry teenager. They have to be careful not to get so angry that their aging prostate gives way and they piss themselves.

 

The 1881 is a great idea and I know the creator of the group comes on here occasionally so maybe he will comment.
One thing they don’t take well is criticism. I’ve seen a few do this in the past on their Facebook group and it’s normally somebody else’s fault. I do get the feeling it is becoming a bit like the Palace lot with not everybody being all that happy with their existence. I also think they don’t help themselves by always saying that they are the only ones who sing. Away games we’ve always created plenty of noise like most clubs so this has nothing to do with them. The home games have improved and credit to them for this. I hope they keep going but I do feel they need to remember that we are all fans of the club if we sing or not and not everybody wants to hear somebody swearing for 90 minutes

 

Are you suggesting most of those in the 1881 consider it a religious movement?!

 

That would be an ecumenical matter.

Never said I was all that surprised, more that I find their reactions amusing when they realise they've just been accidentally insulting me.

The 1881 should be in one or two rows all the way around the stadium. Then they'd get everyone else singing... Maybe.

I remember having to get to the ground for 2pm or earlier to sit where I wanted in the "north" stand. There was no need for a singing section because people knew where the singing section was and went and sat there. Moving to the Rookery everyone sat in a position that dictated generally where they would have been in the other end. 20 years have passed and the 20 year olds are 40, the 30 year olds are 50 etc. Many with younger kids now.

I dont think they should get booted out though. Theres no justification that the 1881 can make more noise from the middle of the rookery in my opinion so I would be annoyed that my view from the middle behind the goal was given to a "better" fan. Especially a "better" fan who will go back to supportimg spurs when we get relegated or one who calls everyone a **** w**k*r.

1881 has its place and do a brilliant job but I think they're close to a red line.

 

Just play crowd noise over the PA.

Could also include some booing to help us avoid hoarse throats.

 

Or for last saturday, maybe the canned laughter from one of the early "Friends" episodes ?

Done well, it is not obvious that it is being done but it can make the crowd sound a lot louder. But it does require that the noisemakers be in a fairly concentrated area.

 

Get 50 displaced members of the 1881 in a locked room watching the game shouting profanities over the tannoy at the GT, Rookery and EJ stands.

The solution always outs through this forum in the end.
