Hi Owen These are nice. I think the red hornet on yellow background looks the most striking, and as such prefer your earlier watford-shield-crest-design over these. I agree with the earlier comment that they have a retro 70s feel to them and I’m not sure that’s ideal. And I also agree with RookeryDad’s point that using insects risks looking weedy. I can’t do fancy vector stuff so I’ve had a quick hack in photoshop to illustrate a couple of suggestions. Firstly, a mobius strip might work as a distinctive shape (would look better with some shading at the corners) Secondly, using a more realistic hornet, that in contrast to the current dopey hart has more attitude. And finally, having the hornet either grabbing the badge, or climbing up over the back of it (I could only make it sit on top!) Feel free to use, ignore or block as you wish…
I *think* here's the problem - the hart and hornet both require quite fine detailing (antlers, antennae, wings and legs) that are very difficult to do 'realistically'. Munster RFC's badge I still think sets a better precedent (nb I'm not c&ping the badge as I know Munster are touchy about people reusing their badge)..
OW You’ve put the work in. I think it proves if the alternative is to be a hornet it has to be from a different angle. I like the idea of face on grabbing the crest from the top or possible from the side curled in a c, as looks more menacing
Thanks for the feedback. I like your idea. I think it would work but I'm not sure I'd be able to make a nice realistic hornet as it's not my style but I agree that it would look nice. It's going to be a tough choice for those who have to decide on a badge. It was fun little project to work on for a little while at least.
The best designed ones I’ve seen on here yet were the ones that kept the diamond kind of shape but removed the rectangular box at the top with the writing in.
Agreed. Found a similar design to @NathWFC's that I like. Colours would need changing though and resizing of the hornet so that it fits within the badge would probably look better.
From what I've seen of every single one of these insect representations - let's make life easier for the designers. So from now on I suggest we change out nickname to the "Daddy Long Legs".
I actually like that (with the hornet actually larger than the background shape) - makes it a bit more unique and stand out. But yes, less red for me.
Hi everyone, I've been working on a logo idea for the competition and I'd really appreciate some feedback from some proper fans. Rather than try to illustrate a hornet, i've designed the logo as a simplified version of just the hornets abdomen. The version with the text would be the main logo, with the stripped back logo used at smaller scale/on merchandise. The 3 lines along the abdomen are a little nod to 1983, the most successful year in the clubs history. I appreciate any comments or thoughts, hope you guys like the design.
I like the out the box thinking. Not quite sure it works on the striped kit, but way more interesting concept that (yawn) another plan view of an insect.
Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the concept. I agree that the logo would work better on a plain background, my understanding is that the shirt for next season would be yellow/black split down the middle like Blackburn which would hopefully address this.
like the concept hate the shape. too much like Dirty Leed's old one Those stripes on the current shape with something in the middle?
I like it. It’s very different and is definitely thinking outside the box. I personally don’t want our badge to change, but wouldn’t be horrified if the club went something down this line. It’s neat and tidy. I prefer it with the thinner stripes though.
Personally, I'm not bothered. However, we're one decent offer away from a 'Vincent Tan' changing the club colours - why is why I like the black embossed badge. I also ike the fact that uneducated fans ask why we have a stag on our badge. One thing I don't like, is the 'Blackburn Rovers' jersey for next season...hate it.
Thanks for the feedback, i'll see how it looks in the current shape as suggested. Glad you like it. I realise it's probably quite different from a lot of the other submissions but that hopefully makes it stand out.
Prob the most well done I've seen on here. Only thing is maybe the red font is a bit jarring. How does it look in black instead? Or maybe in a slightly different font, perhaps with the 'Watford' curved in line with the top curve of the oval, then either 'FC' or 'Football Club' at the bottom part of the oval. Or the text could just say WFC. Lots of Norwegian clubs seem to have badges that incorporate difference types of text in ovals; could be some inspiration (see below). Also, I actually think the second badge, with the thicker lines, is a bit better and slightly more stylish. It looks good on the shirt and has a similar kind of simplicity to the new Juve logo. I'd be curious to know if the Watford text could be incorporated in to it somehow, perhaps round the outside somewhere (either Watford at the top, or perhaps 'Watford' running down the bottom of the left curve side of the badge, and 'Football Club' running up the right hand curve)? If it's possible to get some text in somewhere, then I might even prefer it as main logo to the first one. The club wanted it to at least say the name of the club somewhere.
Thanks for the kind comments. I kind of agree about the red text, I prefer it in black however I wanted to keep all three of the primary colours within the logo. I 'm going to keep playing with the typeface as I haven't given it as much consideration as the rest of the design yet and I think it could be working harder. A slight misconception however is that the second badge is a separate design. As part of the submission brief I am required to provide a primary version of the logo and a simplified version, the two are meant to co-exist. This page in the submission guide shows how Watford currently do this alongside examples from the Atlanta Hawks and PSG. The simplified logo doesn't need to have text on it. I may try a variation of the simplified logo as a main logo with the text sitting outside the crest shape if that's something that you'd like to see?
I like the idea and concept, but without a head, perhaps a rampant Harts head, it does not work for me.
Ah okay. Well I think the simplified variation looks a bit more bold, so a version of it as the main logo could be worth a try.
Another option is to put the simplified logo inside a slightly larger , similarly shaped outline which could accommodate the font at the top, similar to say the Cagliari or Bournemouth logos: Taking a hint from the Cagliari style could even enable you to use the black/yellow half-half colour split in the outer shield as a nod to our existing logo. Might look good, might be an unnecessary clashing extra.
