Have we signed a Bundesliga player since then, I don't think we have. Nice little coincidence there!

Never seen him play, but a quick Google indicates he can also play defensive mid too. Was part of the Serbia u20 side that won the World Cup, played a bit-part role for the senior side in Russia last year, but was a regular in their Nations League campaign

At club level, Werder conceded 49 in 34 games this season which sounds pretty average (not an awful lot better goals per game record than us in the Premier League), although it ended up being the 6th best in the Bundesliga, and I know absolutely nothing about who else plays for them

Would be an interesting signing, hopefully an upgrade on what we have at the moment even if none of that screams top Premier League defender. Home grown as well which helps slightly

2 red cards and 7 yellow cards in 23 Bundesliga appearances - this is definitely a believable rumour.

I'm pleased he can take a long range free kick down the local park. Very important when we have the crossbar challenge. We've not been any good at that since Alec Chamberlain left.

He played for Spurs in the youth team and did make a couple of first team appearances for them. He was also loaned to Middlesbrough and Charlton in the Championship, but he was only 18 then so I wouldn't hold that against him.

He's really made his mark in the last couple of seasons. Is a regular in the Werder Bremen side and has made 82 appearances. Werder finished 8th last season, but their defensive record was pretty decent. 49 goals conceded which was the 6th best in the league.

He was born in Switzerland, so it follows that he's a full Serbian international, having represented Serbia at every level.

He's still young at 23, but has potential and a bit of pedigree. At 6' 2" is a decent height, but he's only scored a couple of goals in his career to date, so probably wont be too much of a threat at set pieces when we attack.

The big downside, for us anyway, is that he's under contract until 2022, so is going to cost us some money. His current valuation according to transfermarkt is around the £10m mark. A bit steep for us, but within our price range nonetheless.

Yeah but the fees quoted on that website are always pretty dubious. Capoue - £7.2m, Doucoure - £22.5m, Pereyra - £10.8m...

Just depends on what the player wants to do and whether Werder particularly need the cash or can afford to hold out a bit.

It would make sense if we did something with Prodl as part of this deal, if of course it's true. You don't see many swap deals these days, but it would make sense if we swap Prodl for Veljkovic, plus a bit of cash.

Quick poll of Werder fans on Twitter suggests they'd be up for it. Get it done, Gino!

I’m always very concerned to hear that a centre back can allegedly play in midfield or vice versa. It usually has the word ‘utility’ written all over.

And although he was young, I’m even more alarmed to see he wasn’t classed as even good enough to knock Grant Leadbetter out of the Boro team a few years ago...

Been reading from their fans that he’s wildly inconsistent. Given how well he’s capable of playing they had high hopes for him but after another up and down season they’re starting to think he’ll never fulfil his potential and manage to put in regular solid performances. Seem happy to see him sold if the price is right.

It’s Kaan Ayhan from Fortuna that has that release clause, not Veljkovic.

Edit: sorry, just saw this was stated above. Carry on.
