Crystal Palace 'grind out' a 1-4 victory??

Who on earth is writing for the BBC nowadays?

Hahaha I’ve stopped caring. I’m genuinely glad about this result, everyone at the club has coasted since the second we lifted the trophy.

    The curse of success.

‘I reached the top & had to stop
    And that’s what’s bothering me.’

It reads like a Shakespearean tragedy.

Wouldn’t surprise me to be honest, I don’t think he would deliberately let goals in exactly but he clearly isn’t motivated.

The club has seemingly decided that the values and methods that brought us success are now beneath them and we should ‘evolve our style’. Sadly this means too many young players in the squad before they’re ready trying to play in a way which doesn’t suit them at all. The signings have been shocking. Sarri has had a lot of flack for being too dogmatic but Puel is even worse for it in my opinion, we’ve been seeing the same very specific problems week in week out and it hasn’t changed one bit. He’s been on the hook for over a year and it’s no good for anyone. Nobody respects him and he’s done nothing to suggest he knows what he’s doing.

I’m really fed up with it, the style of play, the lack of atmosphere, some really unlikeable characters and players at the club.... I’m not saying modern football is **** but there’s nothing fun about the direction the club are going in. We need a rebirth.

I know stats don't tell you everything but the BBC says Leicester had 65% possession and 27 shots on goal to Palace's 35% and 7 shots, and Palace scored from 4 of only 5 shots on target (although Leicester had the same number).

So was is it a problem with the way the Leicester team was set up by Puel?

I don’t know where to start. An XG of of 0.96 tells you that we really don’t threaten the goal. Just aimless, desperate punts at goal.

As for the possession, it means nothing if it doesn’t lead to goals or prevent the opposition from scoring. Just having the ball for the sake of it, there’s no skill in it.

As a side note, does XG have any credibility in practice?

That’s jolly kind of you but you know it’s not that simple! I’m stuck with them for better or for worse.
Well I’m sure one of the stats boffins on here could tell you but it I think so, it’s just a handy way of checking on the quality of chances. Low XG = few good chances. We certainly don’t create many clear scoring opportunities so it seems fair enough to me.

XG was 1.2 vs 1.75 (according to MotD).

Would be first manager to be sacked for losing by 0.55 of a goal.

The XG numbers seldom bare much resemblance to the play, in my estimation. Dodgy algorithm.

The concept is fine although a bit redundant.

Tells you if your strikers are taking their chances. I get that off the shoutbox.

I know they had 10 men for an hour or so but Huddersfield made Newcastle look like a real attacking force .

    Could have been 6/7!

I'm not so sure it's redundant. When we lost 0-2 to Arsenal we won on XG and I hopefully suckled the algorithmic teat for a few days after that like the runt piglet in a litter.

Now it’s never nice to see a good person lose their job, it’s not like when we fired Dennis Wise after a short stint playing for us. Puel is not a bad guy just the wrong man at the wrong time...... but get the **** in you ******* beauty.

    Caretaker manager in charge.

    Caretaker manager lol!

Gotta love the Pozzo's as we'd already have 10 new managers lined up.

Some journo has suggested Michael Oliver is a great referee because he operates silently in he background and does not want to make himself the story. HB1 has probably destroyed his television!

In other news, Olly Murs appears to be an idiot. On goals on sunday he says "as a striker you think that's a penalty because it is so close to being in the box".

I happened to hear that snippet (as I was trying to avoid Gove on the Marr show).

    The journos seemed dourly humourless.

Thought of Murs simply too much. You’re a brave man to watch that, Jumbo.
