Let’s be honest, we will increasingly be linked with strikers between now and the rest of the window. And then we will buy Fran Sol on deadline day for €3m and be underwhelmed.

Forgot about him. Seems a bit weird we were pushing for a striker that long ago but don't seem to have been that close since then.

Would be delighted with Fran Sol. He’d be here now if he didn’t think he could do better.

The World Cup has made this a very late window. Not always a bad thing. When Boothroyd was manager we were looking at disaster until we brought in Carlisle, Spring and Dangerous Hendolump all in the last week iirc. The rest is history.

I think he is a good player, good enough to buck the trend of made it Holland and nowhere else.

I don't think you're quite right, IIRC Henderson scored the opening goal of the 05/06 season at home to Preston (I think), so that was at least 3 weeks before the window closed. I think Spring was just a week later, I can't remember when exactly Carlisle came in but we took King in on loan during that month as I don't think he was around for the season opener.

I think King was there on day 1. He was definitely there when we drew 3-3 at Plymouth midweek as he scored IIRC.

Thanks for that. The activity was all pretty late and there was lots of doom was really the point though.

    I found the BBC report

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/4746379.stm

You're right, King was there, as was Carlisle but also new signings DeMerit and Foster were already there too.

It seems that the later signings, Mackay and Spring, played in the Burnley match on 20th August. So although a number of players came in that summer none of them were really late.

DeMerit wasn't a new signing, Ray signed him a year earlier I think

I’m excited about the fact that there has been no real transfer news for about the past week. Nothing normally breaks in the media until the deal is already done or the player is on his way for a medical. So no news is still good news.

I still don’t expect us to sign anyone this week. Think this week will be all about the outgoings. The final week/day is when we will see 2 or 3 new additions. No need to panic.

Someone's looked at all our signings in the last weeks of transfer windows since we've been in the Premier League. It doesn't make for good reading...

Yes a decent review, but this window isn’t like the last three. This is a WC year and most teams’ recruitment is happening late. We have clearly been going for some players for a considerable time, so there is every chance they are well scouted. The problem is competing for them and getting the deals done.

Our transfer business isn’t always late or early either, plenty in the middle, like Pereyra, that drags out.

Febrile atmosphere amongst fans right now. Everybody chill out.

I really enjoyed reading this thread. Personally I think the "Pozzo model" can be defined as prioritising the long term over the short term. That has implications for management and playing staff:

    - On the management side of things it means the "structure" of the club is such that another head coach can simply be parachuted in when the last one decides to up sticks. Since none of them have any real control of the purse strings and are simply there to pick a team and motivate etc, we should be less affected by the transient nature of most managers (although recent media statements about the impact of Silva's departure tend to undermine that stated philosophy)

    - On the playing side, I don't think we are wildly different to a lot of other clubs. Saying that we look for value rather than "big names" doesn't set us aside particularly. I would say we take calculated gambles such as Wilmot, Chalobah, Hughes, Dahlberg, Sinclair, Berghuis, Richarlison but when we do so, we buy at an age where we still get some return if things don't work out well. At the other end of the scale we invest in proven but undervalued/less fashionable professionals who we can rely on to get us through even if there isn't much potential for them to kick on and reinvent themselves such as Britos, Prodl, Mariappa, Cleverley. Deulofeu, Pereyara and Gray sit somewhere between those two groups and that probably explains their larger fees. I don't agree with the poster who said he doesn't care about the balance sheet. If we didn't look after that (with all the proceeds of loans, sales of "flops" such as Berghuis who we might even have made a profit on for all I know) we wouldn't be able to fund the investment in the next intake. Oulare is the exception everyone has highlighted and I agree that was an odd one, but I expect we are waiting for one of his loans to demonstrate some value so that we don't make a complete loss.

It might not be the most exciting "model" but I certainly think there are less enjoyable models (imagine Moshiri owning our club for example) and I don't want to go back to the pre-Pozzo days...

Oulare, Ibarbo, Guedioura, Okaka, Mariappa, Zeegelaar, Wague and Karnezis

Makes for depressing reading, and probably highlights that we tend to move from our first choice to fifth choice when the deadline looms

Doucoure was signed on deadline day too - January window but that doesn't make much difference.

Time to panic. Only 9 days to bring in new signings. We need at least 6 players imho. Getting worrying short on right-backs and goalkeepers imho!

I guess the point being made was about late signings to immediately bolster the squad. Doucouré was signed and then loaned out, didn't have any impact for us for 11 months.
