Reported in the Wobby as a possible Deeney replacement. http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/16305653.REPORTS__Hornets_to_pursue_Vokes_if_Deeney_departs/
Apparently we are looking at signing this lump from Burnley if Deeney goes. May as well relegate us now. At least he won't get his obligatory goal against us.
Well hopefully this is a reality check for those suggesting we get rid of our current strikers "so we can bring in some real quality upfront".
I hope not. Failed at Muff, Wolves, Leeds, Bristol City, Sheffield United, Norwich & Brighton and then can barely get in the team at Burnley. Anyway, Burnley have stung us once already. We don't want to be buying more. Swap deal Jerome Sinclair for Vokes + £5mill is the only way I'd consider this...
Pozzo Network strikes again. An absolute gem of a player. Played in a Euros semi final which none of our other ****** players can say. I genuinely believe Europe is reachable with this guy.
Would rather Nakhi Wells from Burnley. He wants to succeed in the EPL and is hungry (But not in the same way as Deeney)! Volkes is definitely not an upgrade on Deeney, unless there is an unlikely plan to play him with Gray otherwise this makes no sense.
Plan is to start the new season with a front three of Vokes, Success and Penaranda accompanied by a big banner reading ‘look at where your whingeing has got you now’.
Could be fun to watch how Vokes’s role in the team might be explained to Deulofeu and Pereyra. They’d be pulling the same sort of expression a dog does when shown a board game.
Deeney out, Vokes in would be the most amazing piece of transfer *********ry in the history of the Pozzos. And it's a pretty crowded field...
I personally don't think Deeney if he goes replacement would be Vokes, it could well be that Deeney goes and Vokes comes but there will also be other player movements, I am sure once the whole picture is completed it will all make sense! Vokes would be able to make more of a contribution off the bench than what we had last season!
Signing Sam Vokes on a free would be an amazingly poor piece of business. To pay a fee for him would beggar belief.
I thought the reason for transfers were to replace outgoings with better incomings. Not the other away around.
Not exactly an exciting line to get the player to sign though is it? Come to us and we will also put you on the bench. The only reason I could see this being something that happens in reality is if he was bought to supplement Gray because Gino isn’t ready to cut a loss on £18.5m yet. But then that doesn’t make sense because we don’t play 2 up front and the amount of extra value to be drawn from Gray is minimal IMO. I’d honestly rather have any one of the three strikers we have now than Vokes and would be seriously worried if the club think he’s better than what we have.
I wouldn't want him as a first choice, but I'd take him as a replacement for Deeney and Okaka for the occasions we need a big man (as long as we also sign a more complete first-choice striker in addition). He'd be more effective than Deeney. Last season's minutes played per goal from open play: Vokes: 1 goal per 245 minutes Deeney: 1 goal per 921 minutes Vokes scored at twice the rate of Deeney in 2016/17 as well: Vokes: 1 goal per 205 minutes Deeney: 1 goal per 420 minutes
IF this happens I'd argue there's only marginal difference in current / recent playing ability (you could argue it both ways) but we'd probably be better off financially in terms of transfer money and wages. Not the answer to our goal scoring issues but not the worst bit of business when you think of it the way I've pointed out.
I’m not going to attempt to be rational about this one. If we sign him we’re getting relegated. Fact.
