Lots of players crowded around him, but he took the opportunity to make an even bigger headline by sending off a big name player in Buffon. I don't think he is particularly biased. Had something occurred in the Real penalty area I'm sure he would have given that and found a reason to send off Ronaldo. What people tend to gloss over, is Michael Oliver has form for this kind of thing. He did it to us, he did it last night, he did it in a big game in league one in a Championship decider, and these are just the ones I remember. You can see by the way he overly dramatizes pointing to the spot. It's theatrical. I know a lot of people are defending him because I am the poster making the accusation, and a lot of people on here have childish vendetta's. But in all honestly, I think if someone else was making this observation, a lot more would be in agreement. Oliver loves to make these big headline moments, so everyone is talking about him. He gets noticed, and he will use situations like these to further his own career. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43734192 Buffon summed Oliver up. "He has a bag of rubbish for a heart".
Showed some authority doing that surely? Better than some half hearted "well I am not sure but will give it" type situation you get when clearly a ref hears the crowd etc and then gives a decision. The penalty he gave us for the Richarlison incident against Arsenal was much softer - were we complaining? Fair point HB1 - he could have sent 6/7 Juve players off but that is never going to happen of course.
I hope UEFA throw the book at Juve after their disgusting comments towards Oliver. Correct decision all day long. People are only debating it because they want something to talk about. Multiple angles show he had his hands on his back and his leg catching him in the ribs. Had he not done that, Vasquez would have scored the rebound anyway. If it was an English club, captain and manager who made the comments Juve have, you can bet your house on it that UEFA would ban all English clubs from the competition for 15 years. They are so anti-English it’s ridiculous. Can’t wait to see the little slap on the wrist Juve get for their outrageous behaviour. The Italian clubs and nation have cheated many many many times over the years. Pretty much the nation that invented diving in football. Hilarious that they get a correct decision go against them and the whole nation is on a witch hunt. Pathetic behaviour and I for one am glad they are out. Hoping for a Liverpool Madrid final now.
This from the Juve manager who has a bit of class. "Sometimes things go for you, and other times they don't. We need to get over this hard moment and move forwards."
If you're looking at dramatic actions from a referee Oliver has nothing on this bloke. an old one but a gold one.
Racist, sexist, homophobe, Lesbian Britain's Got Talent....I don't know anymore, just reign it in please.
an old one but a gold one.[/QUOTE] Laughing Never seen that before. Would love to see this ref in the PL.
Buffon bores me. Great keeper but why don't your retire FFS? Give Donnarumma a chance of being Italy number 1. He's the future of the national team, not you.
Agree. I actually agreed with HB1 in this one, but him claiming anyone who has a different opinion just has a "childish vendetta" is pathetic in the extreme.
Here's a crazy though, but just bear with me here. What if everyone disagreeing with you is doing so because they actually think you're wrong? I don't give a toss about vendettas. Buffon (the captain) was the one player from the word go who was in Oliver's face, yelling at him. He's obviously a very passionate guy, but he's let his emotions get the better of him and has let his side and himself down IMO. As for you taking issue with the way Oliver pointed to the spot, well on that front I am absolutely speechless. A poster taking issue with the way a person points to the ground? That must be a first..
Of course some will genuinely think it was a penalty, but there are also quite a lot that will take the opposite view without really believing in what they are saying. It's always the same posters that do this regularly. Once it goes through the forum wringer, there's so many wanting to dispute what I say, that Michael Oliver comes out as completely blameless and one of the world's best referee's. I find that quite funny really. I'm pretty sure in reality most would say it was a soft penalty, when they saw the incident live in the moment. Now it seems to be the most blatant penalty, since the stonewall penalty he gave Knockaert. The vast majority in the real world think it was a soft penalty and Michael Oliver has history of making these dramatic game changing decisions. The only place where this gets disputed is on here, as always.
I don't think anyone has suggested that. Not sure where that claim has come from. Don't thinkthis there's a possibility though that the other posters genuinely believe it was actually a penalty, and don't actually care about having an argument wth you?
Well it was probably no more softer than Richarlison's one v Arsenal! As usual there seems to be a mixed reaction everywhere - I'd say most of the comments I've read and heard think it was a penalty actually. If Deeney or Okaka etc fall down like that tomorrow there is no doubt we'd all be crying penalty.
I think you are reading what you want to read. Several posters have said it was definite, true. But plenty of posters have said it was soft. My own initial view was that it was a penalty, but on seeing it again, I was slightly less sure, although on balance I still think the right call was made. So I guess that makes it soft. A soft penalty can still be a penalty though. Some referees would give it, others wouldn’t. Your initial reaction was simply to swear at Oliver, suggesting it was clear-cut that he was incompetent. That’s what people were reacting to - because it wasn’t clear-cut in that way at all. As for just “wanting to dispute what you have to say”: the plain fact of the matter is that you have the Barcelona club crest in your avatar. Do you not think it’s plausible that other posters might think your view of the incident was shaped by your allegiances? Are you yourself sure that it wasn’t- if that penalty had been given to them in the dying seconds of Tuesday’s game, would you have reacted in the same way? So, as El Distraido says, it’s really not a vendetta or just arguing with you because it’s you. It’s disputing your assessment because we disagree with it, and pointing out that your allegiance may have influenced your judgment is a part of that. Oh, and there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Oliver was right to send Buffon off.
Like I said, right from the he start it was a soft penalty. That and it being Michael Oliver in the last minute. I couldn’t give a t0ss if he gives it To RM or Juve. I just want fairness in the game. This character Oliver is just building his career on the back on these decisions. If you can’t see it, then fair enough. But it seems pretty obvious to me.
I wouldn’t say I can’t see it. He does give the impression of liking attention. But I don’t think it was unfair. I think it was a penalty, albeit not a 100% cast-iron one (in my view).
Not sure he could win really. I thought it was soft but if he hadn’t given it Madrid would have gone nuts.
Except Real Madrid. I don't think top level refereeing is about choosing the course of action that will lead to the least complaints.
No, it’s about making the correct decisions without a thought of creating a drama in order to advance your own career.
Renaissance art generally depicts God in flowing robes so the shorts would have to be underneath. Not impossible but would prevent the nice sensation of the cottony fabric against the skin & the welcome heavenly breeze around the nether regions. Mind you, the lad on the left is going all out to experience this sensual feast. Happily, he is keeping his pleasure with all this in check.
So the ref told that Juventus guy to barge into the back of the Madrid attacker then so he could make a match changing decision for the sake of it. As I say if that was Deeney/Richarlison etc being pushed over in injury time we'd all be calling for a penalty - lead by you know who! I remember people saying Richalison v Arsenal was very soft but others said it was a certain foul.
Quite - or least going down in the area rather than just after the half way line which seems to be the norm now!
Seems like the anger at Michael Oliver continues. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43771452 Come on @hornetboy1 - it's time to let it go!
What's it got to do with his wife - poor lady. Mind you remember the Chelsea fans sending death threats to that ref who had a mare according to them against Barca in the semi final a few years back. And the England v Portugal game (I think) in Euro 2004 when Andreas Frisk was forced to quit due to the level of abuse. Chris Hoy used to get regular Twitter abuse because people thought he was Chris FOY!
