There are about 8 separate feuds going on in this thread. We need HB1 to unify them all.

Deeney may have had a poor season but I don't think that anyone can deny that Gracia has reinvigorated him somewhat.

But he did score though didn't he? The match winning goal. If my auntie had ******** etc. I quoted numerous people who said he shouldn't have been picked because he's going to play useless and not score. He played OK in a terrible, terrible game and he took his chance extremely well meaning that they were wrong so I'm not sure what you're talking about or what Okaka has to do with anything.

And I'm bringing up your past comments about us being the worst side in the league (which I haven't misquoted at all by the way) to remind you just how ludicrous your opinions have been in the past and how it's probably for the best to take your current ones with a huge helping of salt.

Lets not get carried away; Deeney has a good football brain and can finish - that's never been in question; but he's got no pace which makes him flawed as a lone striker. It doesn't help that we don't really have a striker capable of playing loan role well.

He barely posts when we win. It's the only reason I hope for victory when I'm at the match.

    Burnley too.

    It’s Pozzo’s big challenge.
If he weren’t, he wouldn’t last 5 years under Pozzo.

Fantastic if Gracia is that man.

He’ll be better paid than his previous jobs but also suggests he wants a project rather than a short term gig.

    Just back. My thoughts:
    - crap game made bearable by the 3 pts

In other news, nearly every post match debate on here ends up with about half a dozen posters pompously swiping at each other with their vegan handbags. The forum's becoming less footy related and more like a Guardian Online comments section. Bring back the burps I say.

We are practically neighbours Sting, in fact we almost were, as we looked at some properties in Selsey last summer before we bought a place in Rustington, near Littlehampton.

Apparently there was a trial run on friday that worked without a hitch , just unfortunate that on the day one or two of the "canons" hit the netting in the roof !

Really? I thought he did all he could tbh. He just needed someone to run beyond him. There was a nice little knock down in the first half, but no-one was there. Everton dragged us down to their level for most of the game and resulted in the ball being aimed at Deeney's head. He won a few headers too. He wasn't even close to being the worst player on the pitch.

I don't really like it but if you're gonna do it then you might as well do it well. And we were excellent at it. Okaka in particular. If Holebas hadn't done his daft foul throw (which nearly cost us) then we'd have kept it down at the SEJ/Rookery corner until the bitter end.

Compare and contrast that with the Chelski match though. They equalise on 82 and then go for it despite their ten men. This gives us space to attack. Deulofeu has a great chance then Janmaat scores a wonder goal on 84. They then really throw caution to the wind which gives us space on the counter for two more (rather than just playing keep-ball) and the best finish at the Vic since that 'Deeney moment'.

Everton however didn't really change their shape much at all when we scored. This was commented on by Shearer on MotD. So our 'corner flag routine' was more justified. And they would have been under instruction to do it.

Re the corner flag episode, the instruction seem to come from Deeney to Okaka when he sent him over when we had the corner towards the end , had we conceded it at the end ( which we nearly did) not sure everyone would have been saying how good it was!

It's always a risk but I suspect that Everton would have come at us for that 5-6 minutes and created 3-4 chances. Of course we might have got them on the break but our recent history of holding on to leads in the last few minutes makes me think that the tactic was/is correct in tight games.

Could we agree, then, that both 'snowflake' and 'fascist' are words that are used too often and too freely?
Tony Coton's moustache reminds me more of (Emilio?) Zapata's. A little bit, but not much, like Kaiser Wilhelm's. I'm pretty sure it wasn't deliberate on the part of one of our finest ever goalkeepers.

That's exactly what I said at the time. Every chance to stop them getting anywhere near our goal we had to take. It was more entertaining than it should have been too.

A small world. We took a short break in Littlehampton a few years ago to look for a place and nearly bought - in Rustington.

Looking ahead, I have just realised that our game v Arsenal falls between their two UEFA Cup ties against Milan - meaning another great chance to go to the Emirates and tonk those tw@ts again. I've approached the club shop in the hope that they can rush out some 'Troy Deeney Massive Cojones Comedy Watford Shorts' - team shorts with two engorged hairy knackers hanging out of the leg - in time for fans to wear on the day.

He may have scored but other than that Deeney was poor. It’s a trivial thing to say when he did score and that goal won the game, but it’s true.

He is painfully slow, doesn’t hold the ball up and doesn’t even win many headers. When he does win aerial challenges it’s always been more his style to flick the ball in to an area than to a team mate.

He found space well for the goal and it was nice to see him actually shoot instead of look for a pass as has become his default over the 3 years we’ve been in the premier league.

If he keeps scoring: happy days, my criticisms are nit-picking, however he hasn’t been scoring regularly for a while and I doubt this is the catalyst for a change in fortunes.

Im amazed at how the consensus amongst the punditry is on how good Deeney is.

Then I remember how lazy and ill informed the punditry is in this country and Im no longer amazed.

Very tough weekend for the anti-Deeney brigade, as this thread proves. With all the usual clichés spouted, I'm surprised 'too busy building his brand' hasn't also been chucked around.

One swallow doesn’t make a summer - especially in Deeney’s case.
There, another little cliche for you.

That stood out for me too. The statement comes across like the football equivalent of the old boys network; British players are treated differently by the pundits and press. Look at the mental gymnastics people went through defending Rooney's decline.

okaka did things in this game that were beyond the comprehension of deeney. I'm still engorged from that turn and shot in the 2nd half.

If Okaka could play 90 mins he'd one of the better pieces of business the club have done.

Historians will be looking back in 200 years analysing how Watford had one of the most complete football players to grace the game.

Unfortunately, he has done similar things for 15-20 mins many times before and the following game when he starts, he sits on his ar** moaning he's been fouled until taken off.

I'd love to see a proper Deeney Okaka duo given a chance, just in case ( unlikely) either of them can sustain a performance for more than just a part of the game.

    Interesting staton football365:

Watford have allowed the opposition eight shots or fewer in seven league games this season. Three of those seven have come in February. Javi Gracia has made a difference.
