England will achieve nothing with Southgate (mr no personality) he picks players that he reads on the back pages, Scared to drop certain players and picks players that are underperforming at club level.
England has the spine of a good team that could do well Pickford/Butland/Heaton anyone of the 3 before Hart who blew his chances at the Euros he's underperforming at west ham and Pep got rid for a reason.
Walker Stones Cahill Rose Bertrand, Ali Sterling Dier Lallana Rashford Kane Vardy e we have some outstanding players then chuck in the young hungry lads like Chalobah Davis Calvert Lewin Alexandre Arnold Maguire Keane, IMO we need to freshen it up and employ a manager that has the balls to pick the right squad and the tactical nous to put a team out that can do a job.

I'd say Stuart Pearce, but has he been out the job to long? Is he just a Southgate with personality? I'm a big believer in giving the national job to an Englishman it's a real shame our big clubs don't give our coaches a chance.

Pearce was awful with the u21s from memory with some decent players. Insipid Football. Would be worse than Southgate imo.

Isn't that basically the first choice team though?

Vardy was injured and the likes of Keane and McGuire were in the squad..

Agreed on Hart but he got MOTM on Thursday which doesn't say much.

Its the squad depth that is the trouble - when Lingard your first choice sub you know there is a problem.

He's an awful manager, evidenced in several different roles. He's not much of a footballing progressive, either. I like his current betting ads, though.

Ancelotti is now available. Get him in now and we might have a decent World Cup.

P.s this started as a joke but then I actually thought about it and decided it's no longer a joke.

Stuart Pearce can never be out of a job for too long. A genuine candidate for worst manager of all time.

And it's not a case of big clubs not giving our coaches a chance. It's a case of none of them being anywhere near the standard required due to the appalling way that football is run in this country, the blame for which lies at the door of the FA.

Worst Manager of All Time might make an interesting thread, but I suppose the really bad ones are sacked so quickly we barely notice them. Perhaps we could consider bad managers who keep getting a job on the merry-go-round for no apparent reason?
I don't disagree with you point about the way football is run but since almost all managers are ex-players, surely by now some British player ought to have picked up enough experience from some of the 'good' foreign managers he has played under to become a good one himself and get a top job. Or are they all to thick?

Ok Pearce wasn't the greatest but he certainly has more heart and passion than Southgate. Southgate has papered over the cracks by qualifying. Maybe Pearce would make a good number 2 equivalent to Keane with Ireland.

I've not read all of this thread, but assuming some of it is actually about Winks, he looked quite good today.

Yes Winks did well. At least was positive which is more than can be said for the regulars like Henderson.

Southgate fits the DNA from an FA point of view but if England cannot be positive when playing a meaningless game after qualification to the world cup or was this the equivalent of an early league cup game. Why takes so long to move the ball and no one willing to take a risk in making a forward run or playing an incisive pass

So what? Where has 'heart and passion' (however that is defined and whatever it means) got him or any of the sides he's managed so far in his managerial career?

  21. foxywfc

    foxywfc Reservist

He kept Man City in the league and on a budget got England u21's to the euro final. Ok he's not the answer but he wouldn't allow his team to play as if they don't give a ****. What did Southgate ever accomplish as a club manager?

  22. J.B

    J.B First Team

I'm not arguing for Gareth Southgate; I'm just saying that Stuart Pearce shouldn't be being touted for any managerial role, let alone the national team job.

Ask some Man City or Nottingham Forest fans about how much 'passion and heart' their sides showed when he was manager. I seem to remember him setting an all time record for fewest league goals at home in a season at City (10 all season). I also remember watching England playing in an U21 Euros with him as manager and it being some of the most insipid, lifeless set of performances I've ever seen from a side.

Those teams definitely played as if they ''didn't give a ****''. Just because he shouted a lot and sung the national anthem loudly when he was a player it doesn't mean he should be England manager. It's exactly that sort of backwards thinking that has made English football a total joke.

Ok I agree with you, he was the first thing that came to my head was just typing out load I guess. Who would you have (not that the FA will be changing Southgate any time soon) as England Manager

  24. J.B

    J.B First Team

The system is so fundamentally flawed and unfit for purpose in pretty much every aspect imaginable that I honestly don't think any manager (out of the ones we are realistically likely to be able to attract) would make any difference. The complete reform of the FA would be a start. Although it will never be allowed to happen, we will never see any real change until that occurs, making the whole charade of new managers and tournament qualifications seem totally inconsequential.

The cripplingly sad thing is that no one cares.

Neither son (20 & 18) has really ever watched an England match.

Just not of interest to them.

It won’t get better on Glenner’s watch.
Martin is bright but craves establishment recognition. Definitely a Chamberlain-Ox kinda guy rather than Chalobah.

Actually, praise be that Nate can sit out this mediocrity.

As a CM who looks for attacking options, he’s just what they lack but will never be picked by soft boy Southgate.

His name gets touted a lot and I agree, of the precious few English coaches in the game he would be my choice, but surely he would want a crack at the Arsenal job or some other larger club first?

Genuinely, when was the last time it wasn't like that consistently? Sure, there's the odd 'above average' performance which results in the media saying we are going to win a major tournament but generally, it's been like it for years.

As JB says and I've said for years, the whole system is rotten. When the marketing department has a role to play in squad selection, you aren't interested in winning tournaments.

All that matters is that the money rolls in from the sponsors and that the media are nice about the setup and the players, especially the really well known ones - remember Lee Dixon at the Euros - 'Wayne Rooney is as good as Pirlo in that role' and today's gem - 'Jack Wilshere is the answer in midfield for England'.

    Same old ****.

England should get to the QF's of the World Cup with the team we have on paper. It's the manager and boring negative tactics that make us look rubbish.

    Pickford

    Walker, Stones, Cahill, Rose

    Chalobah Dier

    Sterling Alli Rashford

    Kane

Seriously a 4-2-3-1 of this team should beat/challenge most other international teams.

Even if you went 3-4-3 with this team it should be enough.

    Pickford

    Maguire Cahill Stones

    Walker Chalobah Dier Rose

    Sterling Kane Rashford

Plus you have the likes of Butland, Trippier, Bertrand/Cresswell, Jones, Keane and Vardy to name a few.

Players like Defoe, Henderson, Livermore, Lingard and Sturridge shouldn't be anywhere near the plane to Russia.

I don't get the Henderson hate to be fair.

Trusted by Rodgers as captain, trusted by Klopp as captain, trusted by Pearce as captain, trusted by Hodgson as captain and trusted by Southgate as captain.

He must be doing SOMETHING right surely?

He could have been if the bloke was ever fit but as that isn't going to happen no point in relying in him now.

Now Whilshere will just be like Walcott at Arsenal - a used sub once in a while unless he leaves which will be tricky as surely he'd fail a medical.

Well he’s definitely a model professional and imagine he’s a dream player to manage and sets an example to other players. Which is commendable in this day and age of idiot footballers.
