YES...it's coming back to me now. He was really poor in that first game and QSF had no option. Not a Bergy hater at all. Great crossing ability but clearly not enough for EPL. On top of the disappointment surrounding Niang it is difficult to lose him as well. We now need pacy wingers or wide midfielders carrying real threat like Ghezzal or Carrillo. COYHS

Where has this 'great crossing ability' myth popped up from? We never saw it in a Watford shirt. His cross against Villa was regulation and I can't remember any others.

I'd guess it's come from Feyenoord games.

I regularly watched Feyenoord on Sky last season. It's not the same as the EPL but Bergy was one of their best players. His wing play and crossing ability was top drawer in several games. Look at his stats last year and before he joined us. Not sure if that would have translated over to us and now we will never know. Last two seasons we have largely been starved of quality crossing. Maybe that's why the Deeney goal against Villa stands out. COYHS

Does anyone know if it has been confirmed yet? I have seen no confirmation from Watford or any English tabloids either for that matter - only Dutch websites and Wikipedia are saying that Berghuis has joined F'Noord

Well if he doesn't want to be here, we don't want him here. Never got a proper crack of the whip, which was a shame but probably best for all parties.

Like the famous Rod Marsh/Alf Ramsey story:

The last time I was picked by him for England we had a team talk before the game and Alf told me we all had to work harder. "Rodney you in particular," he said in his accent. Then he said: "if you don't work hard I'm going to pull you off at half time." And I said: "Christ, at Man City all we get is a cup of tea and an orange."

    Berghuis parting shot, extract from Feyenoord website this morning;

I knew I would have a long wait,’ said Berghuis, who will wear the number 19 shirt at Feyenoord next season. ‘At a certain moment Watford wanted to keep me in the squad. I clearly said that I wanted to come over here. Then you just have to wait. It took quite a long time, but eventually I did feel it would come good.’

Berghuis had several reasons to return to De Kuip. ‘I have the feeling I have more to give. That I can further improve on the second half of last season, become more effective. That was one. Alongside that, it’s about the whole mindset of the club, Feyenoord plays for trophies and to win matches. That suits me better. It was a little different at Watford.’

The difference is young man, the EPL is light years ahead of the Dutch Leagues in all aspects. Feyenoord are no better than someone like Everton or Southampton. In fact, Feyenoord would struggle to get into the top half of the EPL.

Anyway, Steven who? We've just signed a Brazilian wonder kid!

In other words, he didn't want to do any fighting, either for the team, to get in the team or to improve himself enough to be effectual in the Premier League. Fair enough.

He reminds me of when an English player goes abroad. Clueless, unable to grasp the game where they are and quickly rushing back to the safe bosom of home. It's just easier that way.

Bit annoyed really. Not at the club because they were right to sell a player who didn't have the right mindset. However i'm annoyed that our 2 previous managers treated him in a way that gave him that mindset in the first place.

People on here saying he couldn't hack it in the Prem. Why? When he played, he played no worse than anyone else in the 2015-16 season. When he played, he actually looked like a player with real talent. Berghuis didn't leave because he "wasn't good enough", he left because he had no desire for the club.

I guess it would be the same thing if a person decided to leave their job based on their boss. They're not leaving because they aren't good enough, they're leaving because they are fed up with their boss and that's exactly what Berghuis did - whilst also thinking that he didn't want to risk another wasted season under Silva

Nonsense. Everyone serves an apprenticeship and he had no right to expect to come from the Dutch pub league and expect to walk straight into a Premier League team. A lot of the rumour when he was in the wilderness during the Quique year was that his commitment and fitness were lacking. He did very little in his initial appearances in 15/16 to make anyone think there was anything untoward with him not being selected - there was no big clamour for him to be recalled. Then he comes back in to the team near the end with a few cameo appearances, sets up one goal with a regulation cross and everyone lionises him like he's the best thing out of Holland since Cruyff. I know the end of that season was bad but that didn't suddenly make him amazing. And then went his nemesis Quique left he still couldn't apply himself well enough to get Wally to want him either.

I'm afraid his comments as he leaves betray his true feelings. He was never a good fit for a club of our stature and we're better off shot of him. Bubble and GD have called it absolutely spot on.

But Aké was also poor in his first few games. After some consistent game time, Aké became one of our best defenders that season. I'm not saying you are wrong to say Berghuis wasn't great in those few games, it's just that he was never given a proper chance. The same thing happened to Success and Doucoure for a lot of last season.

If Doucoure decided to leave this summer to go to Ligue 1, would it be because he is bad? No, it wouldn't be because we know that he can perform in this league

I think you're at risk of over complicating it. He had a chance at the beginning of 15/16. He missed an open goal against Swansea at home and generally played like a powder-puff winger with the game passing him by. That it took him 6 months to force his way back into the reckoning for selection is entirely his fault. I suppose though it depends whether you think chances are earned or should be awarded based on some sort of even rotation system of selection.

  32. Burnsy

We're over thinking this and allowing his performances for Feyenoord to cloud our judgment. Although he was a favourite of QSF, Jurado looked lightweight too but got regular games because he probably trained well etc. Berghuis was never cut out for this league and bar one decent performance he didn't really even stand out when given a chance. He has talent but that's nothing without desire and work-rate and that was clearly lacking. If he's as talented as some are making out, he could have made it impossible for QSF and Mazzarri to leave him out. He didn't, they did and then he wanted to move on. Silva clearly has said he wants his side to show commitment and gave Berghuis 2/3 weeks to display that. Once again he didn't and was moved on. The club aren't to blame for him not being a success, that's totally on him. Not sad to see him go at all.
