Should the pre seasons not then be the opportunity to get the potential starting 11-15 up to match fitness, learning the systems the manager wants and learning to play with their new team mates so we can hit the ground running rather than hit form 5 or 6 games into the season???

So we got maybe a million or so more for playing him. Whoop de doo.

We are going to get absolutely spanked by liverpool at this rate.

  2. Is this useless turd still at the club?

  3. So, if we left him out, we get less, convince him we don't want him, and then play catch up with his training if he wants to stay.

Pre season matches are about informing decisions, some of which are a little more complex than your simplistic interpretations. If Stephi stays, would you then say it was a bad idea to play him?

He has not been sold yet, but he has been given the chance to show where his ambition lies, and cut through the sentimenal rubbish. It is his decision to stay or go, and Silva has made it clear that quality players that want to stay will be kept.

I am not to fussed about this one in all honesty it was clear that his heart was not here and our last few managers now have not rated him enough to keep him at the club. It is one thing shinning in the Dutch league but a total different game in the EPL. We can do better and hopefully this means that we have someone else in the pipeline hopefully Ranchid Ghezzal or Andre Carrillo.

  5. You are 100% right, other than presuming his response. This is a chance for him to show that his heart is here. I reckon he is more likely to go than stay, but part of me thinks that he could say "Sod it, I want the challenge of playing at little old Watford".

Edit: there is also the strong likelihood that he doesn't fancy repeating the pay cut that he reportedly had to take when he went there on loan last season. Can't remember details, but apparently, and fair does to him, he took something like a 40% pay cut to push through the loan because we refused to subsidise his wages. I don't imagine they will be keen to match what we were paying him.

Quite a few top flight clubs would've taken a look at Stevie B last season. As far as we are aware, no other offers were made or real interest shown (other than the Dutch champs). This doesn't necessarily mean he isn't good enough for the Prem, but does support WFC's assessment to a degree. If he is so good, why no other interest?

My point being, that he probably wouldn't get into most other Prem starting line-ups, and only get in ours due to having such few wide options at this point in the window.

Well forgive my naivity, however at this stage of pre season I'd prefer we start shaping our starting matchday 11 for the league instead of fielding a bench warming Sinclair, Watson, Mason and a leaving Berguis.

Good point, he is supposedly on £22,000 a week at Watford so a 40% decrease would be around £13,200. I know that would be a dream wage for the average person but it is still a significant drop in his weekly salary.

  9. Despite what I say, I still agree. We don't seem to take these games particularly seriously until the final warm up, which has been frustrating when trying to get an idea of where we are heading as we approach a new season.

I guess its just another change of emphasis that we are seeing under the Pozzos, like the transfer policy and the training innovations.

I agree. But we cannot describe the difference between Berghuis and Carrillo/Ghezzal as being massive because we simply don't know that. Carrillo has played little football for 2 years and Ghezzal seems to have an inflated idea of what's he's worth based on one good season. I'm not saying they aren't good enough but people are going off the deep end about relatively unknown prospects - at least in PL terms.

Playing him in pre season even if he goes has suited Silva as he has been able to play the formations and tactics he wants to employ in the season. No other player currently at the club suits.

So there has been a benefit to the team getting used to the system.

He will not be allowed to go without a new signing coming in first or at the same time or being nailed on.

I hope you're right. But my reading of reports is that he has been pretty much allowed to go already without anything else being confirmed as yet. Like you, I want to trust that we have a replacement coming in but I hope it's someone genuinely exciting and not a Hull player or similar.

The Dutch version of the BBC, the NOS just released this article and they normally don't go along in the guessing game when it comes to football transfers, they normally report these things when a deal is 100 percent done:
    http://nos.nl/artikel/2185563-berghuis-definitief-naar-feyenoord.html

We pay 6 million Euro's (5.4 mln Pound Sterling) and he will sign a contract for 4 years. Reason i signed up to this forum earlier this week was to share how we saw it from our perspective. To us he's a very useful player on right wing and are very happy he will come back. I think to half of you it's good that he leaves, while other half hoped he got a fair chance this season.

Anyway, stuff like this happens in football. Best example is us buying Warner Hahn (a promising goalie) but got injured for many months. At the same time Vermeer (our nr 1 goalie) also was out of many months. We signed Brad Jones, he did great, we won the title. So, his contract got extended, Vermeer is fit again as well, and thus sold Hahn without playing him once because our 3rd keeper is also a talent.

Ok, have a great season you guys and hope both clubs do well :)

    Have a nice weekend.

I'm a little gutted he never got a proper chance with us, especially under Flores when he looked the only player with any attacking flair. but if he wanted to go back to Holland then good luck to him. Hopefully he helps Feyenord retain the league.

He got on with training, went on the pre-season tour and played in friendlies, so I'm glad he did things the proper way and allowed the club to deal with it. Much more professional than the alternatives of throwing a strop or leaking stories/unrest to the media.

Surely this means we're about to announce Carrillo or Ghezzal? That would definitely soften the blow, but would also mean we're in need of another winger now.

I'm afraid to say Berghuis has said he wants to leave. It's now a case of when, not if.

I don't blame Berghuis as his attitude in training has been good. He doesn't want to be here because he knows how hard it is. He's just not cut out for it. It's one of those things and he can be a good player in his own country. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I totally agree with Silva's stance, that he/we need players that want to be here and want to fight for the club. Nothing half hearted is required, and that goes for anyone.

Me personally, I was a little torn because he is an excellent professional who clearly liked us as fans and respected the club (unlike one of his fellow countrymen in Southampton) and is one of the most technically gifted players I've ever seen in a Watford shirt. He's amazing at crossing and his dead ball technique is class. However to be a successful winger in this country, you either need to be incredibly fast with decent ball control and good crossing or strong- unfortunately he was neither of those. I genuinely think he would flourish in Italy or even in Spain and would have rather seen him go there. However he's also level-headed and wants to go back to his home country because he knows he improved at Feyenoord last year. I wanna see him do well because he is a likeable guy, but just too weak for the Prem.
Carrillo was not in the first XI and wasn't brought on as a sub today vs Arsenal at the Emirates. Perhaps maybe he's leaving Benfica?

If Bergy has gone for 5.4 million sterling that is 100k less than we paid for him. Feyenoord have got a real bargain in today's market. Hopefully there is at least a modest sell-on clause in view of his age. Maybe he was never quite what we needed but hope he flourishes back in Holland. Can see Amrabat moving on, so we need to get Ghezzal and Carrillo in ASAP. You know it makes sense Gino! COYHS

Not fast or strong enough for the premier league and isn't going to be missed, but always came across as a decent bloke with a good attitude

Feyenoord made a little Berghuis in his soul.

Good luck to him. Think we've lost a very good man and player, as Silva intimates.

There is useful lesson to be learnt from the Berghuis story. It is no good recruiting players who are not going to be committed to the project. This was apparent from day one with Bergy. Not many will connect with the Watford way from the off. What we expect though is whole-hearted effort to match whatever quality they have. We might be a small club but the EPL is the El Dorado of World football. It represents access to untold riches, fame and adoration. But we need to recruit the savvy, hungry and driven to improve. Silva and the club will provide the support for the right players. Our next 4 or 5 signings will therefore be crucial as we can't afford to travel up so many cul de sacs in the future. COYHS

Berghuis' career here got off to a dreadful start, but through no fault of his own. The disgraceful way he was treated by Quique most likely left a bad taste in his mouth, and with his loan move to Feyenoord he's actually spent far, far longer playing in front of their fans than he has ours.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Berghuis, or his character. I just think we have to get future managerial appointments right, and not bring in ****wits like Quique.

To put the blame on Quique for Bergy failing to make the grade at WFC is deluded. His heart never seemed to be in it. The few times we saw him looked moody and petulant in the early days. There will always be that wonderful cross for the Deeney goal but those moments very few and far between. There is a difference between saying someone is not up for sonething compared to a major issue with their character. The Pozzos should not have brought him in if he was not going to be played, as it turns out by 3 successive managers. The net result is clear in that Quique (whom you insult) was one of the most successful managers in our history whereas Berghuis contributed little and will always be viewed fondly as a promising might have been. He is certainly not going in my hall of fame. COYHS

How do you know Berghuis was treated 'disgracefully'? By being paid 18-20k per week?

  31. Is that true though?

The pre season game v Seville his first season he was totally out of his depth, wasn't just a case of not being up to speed he looked like an amateur footballer had walked onto the wrong pitch

Flores yanked him off at half time

Preseason has been a total waste of ******* time if all it's done is shop windowed a wantaway winger and allowed Silver to confirm that 5 or 6 players in our best 11 are not good enough on the ball to play the system we are going to play.

You will be amongst the first on here to leap to the defence of our eventual attacking signings, when by Christmas they look like dung, excusing them because they didn't have the chance to learn the system and get fit during pre season with us.

The Berghuis transfer has been handled poorly all round. Flores as we all know was very cautious in his team selections . He was reluctant to blood players like Berghuis who he didn't think we're ready so it's understandable that Berghuis would be unhappy being shunted to the sidelines.
From his point if view having change to gi back to league champions is his home country is a no brainer and he should have been shipped out two weeks ago. He had been built up into god like status because last season we were crying out fir creativity and we currently lack any quality in the front positions but I,m sure we can do better.
Wish him well , just hope that useless lump Amrabat gets shipped out too
