Got invited to the pictures for the first time in ages to see 'Passengers'

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355644/

A sci-fi film about a 100 year voyage to another planet where everyone's in hibernation but a couple of them wake up by accident only 30 years in to the journey.

The premise was quite good, but clumsily explored. The sets (do they still call them that?) were very impressive.

The story was pretty much laughable guff though. As silly as those kung fu films where they go flying and running vertically up walls.

Example: Hero man goes out to free a jammed up outer door on the spaceship so that the engines can..ahem...'vent' in the style of a Victorian mill chimney. To protect himself from the hundred million degree blast of pressurised engine fuel through this tunnel he's standing in, he gets a door which he cuts off and uses as a shield.

It works perfectly and not one hair on his Hollywood head is even singed. Fortunately he must have also been wearing super asbestos boots, because even his completely unprotected feet and ankles were miraculously unaffected.

Could have been a good movie this one if it had been a bit more thoughtful. 6.5 out of 10.

I have never fancied watching "The Revenant", but there was not a lot on today and I was bored, so I downloaded it on Sky and just watched it. A little bit slow in places, but all in all it was not too bad.

Thoroughly enjoyed Rogue One - engaging throughout - best part of 2016 methinks.

My only issue with Rogue One was that it introduced all of the main characters very quickly in just a few scenes, so it was a little difficult to follow for a short while early on. It of course doesn't help when no one has any sensible names like Dave, Fred or Geoff.

Slightly off topic, but just watched the Netflix feature length documentary on the Meredith Kercher murder and trials of Amanda Knox. Very interesting, I thought.

Convicted, acquitted, convicted, acquitted. Over 8 years. An astonishing legal process which started on circumstantial and extremely flimsy DNA evidence

I struggle to think that her conviction (and that of her boyfriend) was anything other than a complete farce and was a result of the Italian prosecutor (what a **** he was) and police's need for the convictions, coupled with the slimy journalistic need for an "interesting" account to satisfy a salacious public.

Of course Netflix, being American, may be biased in their editing etc, but none the less, it demonstrates how very public trials and external factors can sway the results.

Amazing really that a female soldier and former criminal should also be so incredibly good looking - but it seems to happen an awful lot in films.

This is probably what she'd really look like.

I wonder why film makers are so scared of 'normal'.

Finally got round to Suicide Squad.

Really actually enjoyed it. Not sure if that was because my expectations of it were lowered by the negative reviews, but I actually thought it was pretty good. Storyline was a little soft but no worse than anything else brought out recently in the super hero genre.

Plenty of action and decent enough acting. Would watch again.

Agreed. Entertainment without having to think and Margot Robbie in very small shorts. What's not to like.

I saw La La Land a few weeks ago.

It was very well put together, with some brilliant directing. It was a bit of a spectacle, using dance and scenery (although the singing wasn't flawless) to great effect.

It did get a little slow in the middle, but had a brilliant ending that transformed the film into one which was more subtle, poignant and meaningful.

However, despite being a solid 8/10, it is being vastly overrated by the academy - mostly because of it's vibes of 'cool LA artiness'.

I don't think it was the best film of the year - I preferred the completely overlooked Sing Street, for instance, which hit with more of a punch.

I'd definitely recommend you see La La Land, but don't go expecting to see a brilliant film - instead just with the intention of watching a fun, easy movie.

Watched that Now You See Me last night. Enjoyed it. Twist ending was a load of old **** and not much was explained but meh, I liked.

Went to the pictures with Cifriana to see Hacksaw Ridge last night.

Load of old bawlocks really, but some good battle scenes with plenty of jumps and gore. Plenty of tripe and sausages leaking out from guts and all that.

The first half of the film is a bit of a yawn. Like lovey dovey stuff and that. Not very interesting. 4/10.

The second half of the film is pretty decent. They must have spent a fortune on pyrotechnics and tomato ketchup. 8/10.

Only one question. Why didn't the japs cut the ropes on the scramble net thing that the yanks kept climbing up in order to attack them? Preferably when a load of them were halfway up it.

It seemed such an obvious way to put a stop to them.

I saw the masterpiece "Lego: Batman" yesterday. A very clever film that will have both tots and adults mesmerised for 104 minutes. The gag rate in the first 20 minutes or so is phenomenal.

I enjoyed Now You See Me. I was looking forward to watching Now You See Me 2. Sadly, it was a pile of sh1t. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd rather have watched a pile of sh1t. It was truly awful.

I watched "Friend Request" on Netflix last night and honestly quite enjoyed it. A few jump scares and the twist at the end was a welcome surprise in another of the "social media" trending films. It was much better than "Unfriended" anyways.

Lion...I thought it was ok. Very watchable Sunday night film on kodi. The missus and her girlie friends went to see it in the cinema and all absolutely raved about it.

I watched Trainspotting 2 the other day, as with almost all sequels not as good as the original. Some very funny moments, storyline was OK but it focused too much on the nostalgia rather than getting on with itself as a stand alone.

Bill Paxton died today. Sad news, I liked him as an actor & he appeared in a lot of my favorite films. I believe he was the only actor who could say he'd been killed by an Aliens xenomorph, a terminator & a predator.

I really enjoyed this film...I asked the same question to someone at work about the ropes and apparently they were guarded and any attemp to cut them would result in death. Just wasn't portrayed in the film.

    Ghostbusters, the new one.

I'm a fan of the old one so was worried because of the negative press. Actually I thought it was OK. Entertaining and now the cameos are out of the way I can see the possibility of a couple of sequels.

Went to see Raw, which I thought was very good. It was not as gruesome as I was expecting, based on reading comments, but that may be because I'm a desensitized youth.

After the snooker final last week BBC2 showed Margin Call staring Kevin Spacey and Demi Moore, after a few minutes I was hooked. A very good screenplay about the beginnings of the 2008 financial crash.
