Film you recently watched: part 3

I watched the Wolf of Wall Street on Netflix. Very enjoyable film although somewhat long.

 

Good to see Brie Larson win the BAFTA! Next up..the Oscar!

While most of the acting catagories winners already look nailed on, it will be interesting to see what wins Best Picture.

Like Ron, Hornetgags etc I'd love to see the Big Short get it.

And agree with Clive about the book of the Room, although I think it was good the author was so heavily involved in the film too writing the screenplay.

 

ATM

This one was on Film 4 recently. Dire really. One of those films you only watch to the end because you've already invested time in watching it up until then.

Three yuppie banker types (one female, two male) go to a yuppie banker party. Driving home in the early hours, they decide to go to a little 24 hour ATM shack in the middle of a deserted car park. Whilst they're in there, a chap appears outside in a big parka with his face covered up and just stands there watching them. They are too terrified to go outside of the ATM shack. "What's he DOING?" they keep asking each other.

Eventually a security guard shows up in a car and the parka chap clubs his skull in with a wheel brace for no reason. He then goes back to his watching brief.

It's evident now that what he'd really like to do is club the terrified yuppies' skulls in too. Perfectly understandable and reasonable from my point of view, but his motivation is not really explained. Unfortunately he's thwarted in this ambition and bringing a thankfully early end to this miserable movie, by being too stupid to work out that he could break the glass windows or door of the ATM shack. So he just sits and waits whilst the yuppies try stupid things like putting their cash cards in and typing in their PIN back to front (because that alerts the police, right?), smashing fack out of the interior in the hope that will set an alarm off or something, writing HELP in lipstick on the windows and throwing a deposit envelope filled with money and earrings at him (because every insane murderer has his price, right?).

They are too stupid to consider things like three of them could doubtless kick seven bells out of parka man if they went at it together, or that if they all ran off in different directions he couldn't run after all three of them.

Eventually the magic power of the glass that's keeping the insane murderer out runs out though and what's this? Oh maaaa Gaaawwwd! He's inside!! Now the solution is forced on them, the yuppies manage to kill him in a matter of moments by strangling him with a blind pull cord. But what's this? Oh no! He's still outside! This is another parka man who's just passing by and has come to get some money out (failing to notice the dead bodies scattered around the car park, HELP written on the window etc, etc). What have they done? Oh no!

One yuppie then makes a solo run for it. Straight into the arms of parka man who shivs him with a screwdriver. But unfortunately he's not quite brown bread so the other two go out and get him and drag him back inside. Parka man has had enough of waiting now and sets up a hosepipe through the airvent and starts filling the ATM shack with water, which rapidly rises (those places are as watertight as a drum y'know). After smashing the place up a bit more, the yuppies decide to set fire to the gaff and that'll set the sprinklers off (and make the water rise faster? they didn't really explain that bit) and this works great but female yuppie falls off male one's shoulders and is dead too. All sorts of alarms go off and the cops appear from all corners. Hurray! Parka man melts away into the crowds of people who have suddenly appeared (after the car park had been deserted for the last 5 hours mind).

And the punchline is that whilst wrecking the inside of the ATM shack, they've put the camera out of order and now the cops think it's the surviving yuppie that's killed his two mates and the security guard and innocent parka man number 2.

Ha ha ha. Serves him right. No sympathy.

Rubbish movie 3 out of 10.

 

3 out of 10 for the film but 9 for the review. It kept me entertained at least.

 

The Forest - predictable jump scares...spends so much time trying to build tension and atmosphere that you can easily fall asleep and I did nod off. I don't understand the fascination with Natalie Dormer, I don't think she's at all attractive, in fact quite plain looking - as for her acting...meh, she's no Kate Beckinsale....mmmmmm Kate Beckinsale. Anyway, I found it quite boring and glad I watched it online rather than pay for it. 4/10

Regression - started promisingly but the ending was unsatisfying and rushed as if they didn't know how to do it - which spoilt it. 6/10

The 5th Wave - again promising beginning but with all teen fan fiction stories, they have to turn it into a love story. Twilight, Hunger Games, The Host, Divergence (and Insurgence) are all pretty much the same movie...and The 5th Wave follows the same formula....female lead character fights oppression, falls in love, faces defeat however love conquers everything and she wins...The End. 5/10

Victor Frankenstein - I wanted to like this, I really tried however seeing some good actors being let down by the screenplay was disappointing. I liked Andrew Scott's (Moriarty from Sherlock) portrayal of the obsessive detective, James McAvoy was likeable and charming as usual, Daniel Radcliffe was ok but I found the lack of chemistry between Radcliffe and McAvoy detracted from the film. 6.5/10

It Follows - went to the cinema last year to watch it snd didn't really rate it. Watched it again and completely changed my opinion. Most original horror film in years and I enjoyed it more this time around having had to sit through utterly crap horror movies like another Paranormal Activity, The Vatican Tapes and The Forest. I'd highly recommend this one. 8.5/10

Goosebumps - Enjoyed this one, reminded me of another film called Inkheart (which was darker than this one), however an enjoyable family romp. 7/10

The Last Witch Hunter - not usually a fan of one dimensional Vin Diesel - he seems to play the same character in every film - however I enjoyed this one. It was good fun and good to see Rose 'You know nothing Jon Snow' Leslie back on screen. Also, I'm not usually a fan of messing with classic songs, however the closing credits and official song to the movie is the old Rolling Stones classic Paint it Black which I love, but for this film they re-imaged it and it's performed by Ciara and I've got to admit, I really like it. Anyway the film 7/10

 

I've recently re watched the Jason Bourne films, and what brilliant films they are.

I think "The Bourne" franchise could be well worth reviving, I think new Bourne films could be a great success and could possibly rival the "James Bond" Movies!

 

They've finished the new Jason Bourne movie due for release in July with Matt Damon back in the lead role.

 

That's good news, I did not know that.

Ennio Morricone winning an Oscar was only 40 years overdue.

 

Never apparently....some films should never be touched.

 

That looks really bad. It's like they blew half the budget just getting Morgan Freeman.

In other news, I've seen Batman vs Superman, and I confidently predict that the 'DC Cinematic Universe' is going to fall flat on it's face. Dreadful (although I'm not sure what I expected, Zack Snyder is a disaster of a director).

 

I watched The Intern on my recent flight....(whispers quietly) quite enjoyed it

 

Batman v Superman is a very, very decent superhero film.

A big part of the problem is that everyone is far too busy riding the d*ck of Marvel (Batman v Superman being comfortably better than anything they've released since the first Avengers film) and being hung up on the idea that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale are superhero movie gods and that nothing could or will ever surpass them (despite the fact that The Dark Knight Rises was an absolute mess), all the while holding an unfair agenda against Zack Snyder who has now delivered two good superhero movies in a row.

Also, Ben Affleck is also already a far, far, far better Bruce Wayne and Batman than Bale was. So much more presence.

 

Wow Nath, that's a whole bunch of reasons why people will deliberately not like a movie.

I haven't seen BvS yet as will be next week but the vast majority of the reviews I've read state that it's a effects laden, story light mess and a typically confusing Zack Snyder movie.

I hated Man Of Steel. I felt they turned Superman into a hateful jackass, which I initially blamed on Henry Cavill's range as an actor. Having subsequently seen him in other things, I know it's not that. The guy can act if they let him.

Without going into plot hole detail about Man Of Steel, I can't say I'm any more confident about BvS. It seems they've explained most of the story in the trailers. At least with the Civil War trailers, they don't tell you if Captain America and Iron Man make up in the end. In the BvS trailers, it certainly appears that way.

 

A documentary film called "The Bridge" was recommended by a colleague - more of a documentary than a film as it is from the families'/witnesses perspectives. I don't know if I recommend it or not because of "what it is" (wikipedia first - I didn't :dismay.

Batman v Superman. Just a big advert for Justice League and Wonder-woman movies in my eyes, sets it all up nicely. Didn't need to know all about how Batman came about as was done only a few years ago, hated the dream sequences but it was decent in other areas. 6/10 movie.

I wish you'd posted the title instead of annoyingly forcing me to click the link. I thought you were talking about Ghostbusters, in which case I agreed with you.

 

Completely disagree with that.

Bale had to play 3 characters in the DK trilogy - Batman, Bruce Wayne and Bruce Wayne playboy billionaire (public persona).

Whilst Affleck was ok, he plays one character, angry. He's angry as Bruce Wayne and he's angry as Batman. There's no real range as he's the same character with or without the cowel and cape and it looked like they abandoned his no kill rule.

However, having said that, whilst I didn't hate the film, I didn't love it either. I was disappointed with the weak screenplay and script - some of the dialogue had me cringing. The characters were ok. I have no problem with suspending disbelief, especially if I'm watching an indestructible flying alien and a billionaire vigilante in a bat suit...however make the situations and circumstances less tenuous and more realistic. I sat there sometimes thinking...really??

Wonder Woman's introduction was cliched and her character just skin and bones with no real background, just her musical theme had a very 'arabianesque' tone and she was getting on a Turkish Arlines plane...so we can assume she's from Eastern Europe or the Middle East.

I didn't like Jeremy Irons as Alfred, no warmth or affection for Wayne just cynicism and sarcasm...oh that dry British sense of humour. With Michael Caine you felt the anguish and love for Wayne, that he just wanted the best for him to find someone and fall in love. A few passing comments from Irons never sold that relationship to me.

I've just read Snyder is not doing the next Justice League film, and reading there was alot of interference from the studio on BvS, however I'm undecided about Snyder as a director.

Nolan's revival of the Dark Knight franchise after Schumacher and Clooney destroyed it, is to be lauded but for me they've kind of ruined the legacy with this film. I assume the relationship with Selena Kyle didn't work out?
Snyder wants to keep reminding us...nay...slapping us in the face with how Bruce Wayne's parents were killed...flashback after flashback with a dream sequence...quite possibly the worst example of exposition technique. Did you know, Bruce Wayne was driven to create Batman after the murder of his parents? Well if you didn't know before, you'll certainly know by the end of the film.

This film gets a "meh" from me. Marvel are streets/streaks ahead (except for the Fantastic Four remake - sh!tpile of a film)...give me Guardians of the Galaxy anyday.

 

Just the concept of batman V superman puts me off.

Watched star wars last week, not bad. Am I the only one who thinks it's a remake though? There would have been outrage at a full on remake with new Leia, R2, Han and Luke so they just rehashed the story.

 

I think that was on purpose to win back the fans. The prequels had completely lost the 'Star Wars' feel, over dependence on CGI, crappy story lines, wooden performances, terrible scripts and of course Jar Jar fecking Binks (side note I saw that they were remastering the prequels with less CGI and Binks speaking in an alien language with subtitles - however still hate The Phantom Menace)

This felt comfortable and fans could relate to the story as it's the blueprint of why Star Wars became a huge success. I think you'll see boundaries being pushed in the next 2 films...or at least I hope so.

 

I know one of the stormtroopers, he did warn about a year before the release of Episode VII that it was a near remake of IV.

 

Kids? I plan to see this as soon as possible!
