Watford entertain League One Gillingham at Vicarage Road assuming the sinkhole outside the stadium hasn't engulfed it by then. Watford's record in this competition is pretty poor in recent seasons since the 2004/5 edition which saw us hammer Portsmouth and Southampton on the way to a semi-final against Liverpool. Last years campaign was a dismal one ended at the first hurdle by Preston North End with Miguel Britos being sent off on his debut and roundly decried as one of the worst players ever to don the yellow.

Once again the League Cup offers a valuable opportunity for Mazzari to test some of the youngsters and reserves. Hopefully players like Vydra get a run out along with Jakubiak, Rowan and Hoban. It is unlikely that Success will feature though just to keep him wrapped up for the main event at the end of the week. Presumably the team will stick with a 3-5-2 formation.

Gillingham managed by Justin Edinburgh currently lead League One as they did for the initial part of last season before fading away in the second half of their campaign. They have won all three of their games including a 3-1 win over Southend to secure their passage to the second round of the EFL Cup. They play a 4-4-2 formation in which Ryan Jackson at right back has been impressive so far.

Edinburgh has made several acquisitions over the summer with a view to ensuring a reasonable shot at promotion. These are players with experience of the top flight and Championship such as Jamie O'Hara, Lee Martin, Paul Konchesky and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas as well as several younger players who have impressed at other clubs like Josh Wright and Billy Knott. Jake Hessenthaler son of Watford stalwart Andy may feature at some point. Max Ehmer for the Gills is unlikely to feature having suffered concussion.Gillingham will see this as a potential giant killing and they certainly have players that can trouble us given that we will field in all probability a much changed first eleven.

Fingers crossed we can secure passage into the next round and build some forward momentum and players press their claims to the first team particularly Vydra who will hopefully be retained by Mazzari.

    Gillingham 2016-17 season:

    3-1 W Southend United A
    3-1 W Southend United A (EFL Cup 1st Round)
    2-1 W Bury H

Kabasele to one-up Britos and kill someone on his debut.

Good chance to play the reserves.

Hopefully Vydra and Forestieri get a bit of a run out here.

Sounds like it might be quite a good game and worth the tenner to get in, contrary to what one of one resident misery guts think, with Gillingham again one of the contenders for promotion - at least more interesting than some of our other ties at this stage of the competition (not very difficult TBH). Let's hope we aren't reunited with them next season!

Realistically, what would be considered a good second round tie when we usually play lower league opponents? Morecambe, Bury or Southend at home out of the top of my head?

I'm looking forward to this one. Hope we smash them, they were a bogey team of sorts for a while. I seem to recall a painful boxing day defeat at their **** hole of a stadium 15 years ago or so.

I remember going there with my brother for a 1-1 draw I think.

You're correct their stadium and the surrounding area is horrid but then I suppose most are. Not every ground is Craven Cottage after all!

Gillingham always remind me of the directions from our programme which were something along the lines of...

"Drive for approx 3 miles out of Hertfordshire and then park". We were miles away from the ground. On reflection that was no bad thing!

Tickets go on sale after 5pm today £10 adults, £1 U16s. It also says that for those buying tickets who are not yet Home Category C it will count towards their tally, I don't think they did that last year if not then this is a good way to get the attendance up a little bit.

Gillingham have made a few marquee signings of late. This will be a tough game. Their players could more than cut it against ours, especially if they play a full-strength team. I'm expecting rotation, of course, but I'd like to think we maintain a decent bit of clout.

And so, I would call the squad like this:

Pantilimon; Nyom, Kabasele, Hoban; Djedje, Doucoure, Behrami, Zuniga, Anya; Vydra, Success - or something like that. It depends on the lineup v Chelsea, who we get in, and who is injured.

Might as well go with a team like this

    Pants
    Kabasele -- Hoban -- Cathcart/Prodl/Britos (1 of these 3)
Anya -- Doucoure -- Gueds -- Behrami -- Dja Djeje
    Success/Sinclair/Vydra (2 of 3)

Anyone who hasn't played in a league game & also doesn't get to start against Gillingham might as well pack his bags

Hope he does. At least for Jon Mark's sake. If he's left out and commentates, they'd better reinforce the gantry.

Entirely possible Pereyra could feature in this one.

    If he signs of course.

No chance. Haven't they started the season ok? This will be the usual early season cup game where we either struggle through 1-0 or they grind out a 0-1. Uninspiring stuff.
