With the Euros fast approaching, what are your thoughts on England's chances? Personally, I think we have the talent to win the thing, unfortunately, the man in charge is clueless. If England were to set up with Vardy and Kane up top, with a diamond midfield containing Alli attacking and Dier holding, we'd be sorted. Wroy won't have the bottle to play Kane and Vardy together in attack, he'll play Rooney and Wiltshire and half a dozen 5h1te Liverpool players. With him in charge, expect another early exit
I've heard he wants to play Rooney and Lallana on the wings on Friday against the Aussies. I know that he is just trying stuff but he shouldn't need to try that for him to know it won't work. Our two best players are strikers, so play them both in their natural positions and we'll do well.
Still 'experimenting' a few weeks before the tournament yet claiming 'experimenting' as the reason for every poor result for the last two years pretty much says all you need to know about the dinosaur in charge.
Woy can experiment all he wants in these friendly matches because he will completely bottle it when it comes to the first Euro game and revert to his dinosaur ways. No way will he play Kane and Vardy together. The overrated Henderson will start (if fit) as will good old Milner. That said, even Woy should lead England out of a poor group and into the knockout stages. I just see it as some football to watch to fill in the gap before Watford start again.
he plays Kane and Vardy with Ali behind them. Ali gets sent off for being petulent Vardy gets sent off for diving twice Kane decides to shot at every opportunity rather than making the easy passs England Lose, Its Roys Fault Rooney starts up front With Kane and Vardy either side of him Rooney goes wondering into midfield and Vardy and Kane find themselves loitering around the wings The ref fails to give a blatent penalty for a foul on Vardy Stones tries one to many passes and gets caught out and we lose 1-0 It's roys fault England win the championship It was luck, nothing to do with Roy Who'd be a manager
One problem is the idiotic decision to include Wilshire. Roy has to start him every warm up game to try and get him match fit so the warm up games are all centred round one player rather than formulating the best team. Talent wise I'd expect us to get quarter finals. Anything else is a job well done by Roy.
If we get out of the group I'll be surprised. If we get to the Semi Finals I'll be utterly astonished. Win it?
With 4 of the best 3rd places going through, to get out of the group 1 win should be enough provided you don't get thrashed in the other 2 matches. I expect England to get out of the group but not much more.
He'll play them together, but not how they should be used (aka up top together). He'll use Vardy as a winger.
I despise how Rooney has publicly announced that he wants to move to a midfield role just a few weeks before the start of the tournament. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Hodgson will find a way of shoehorning him in there even if it's to the detriment of the team (which it will be). People raving about Rooney's performance in the FA Cup final are ignoring how many times he gave the ball away in a threatening position. We should absolutely be playing with Kane and Vardy as a front two - there's absolutely no point playing Vardy if you're going to stick him out on the left wing as he did against Turkey (or so I hear, I couldn't be arsed to watch it). I actually don't mind Henderson, Milner or Wilshere and I think 2 of them would fit in well in a diamond with Alli and Dier. It ain't gonna happen though - 4-2-3-1 with Rooney in midfield and Vardy left wing. Predicting a 2nd round exit to some tinpot Eastern European country.
Roy hasn't played with wingers all the way through the qualifying, so I wouldn't expect him to start now. His either played 4 3 2 1 or 4 3 3. If he is goin gto fit Kane, Vardy and Rooney in, which I suspect he will, then he'll out Rooney a little deeper just behind Kane and Vardy. Unfortunately this is probably going to be at the expense of Barkley or Ali My biggest concern is Ali's temperament. All those little niggels and flick outs that he gets away with or a yellow card in the premiership is a straight red in Euro championships. If he can keep that edge but take it down a notch, then he could turn out to be the player of the tournament
We are not going to win. We will go out at the earliest opportunity. In vardy and Kane we might have a chance at quarters ish, but they won't play or will be out of position
We have no chance of winning it, but the semi finals would equate to an excellent tournament. Alli is too inconsistent to play 90 minutes of every game, and is likely to pick up cards. Rooney moved into midfield before his announcement as he was absolutely awful up front this season. He was quite good in midfield for the final stretch of the season. Rashford has been excellent and deserves his chance to earn a spot. He has been better than Defoe and Sturridge in the EPL run in. Wilshire hasn't been fit all season and is the only question mark on the squad list if you ask me (although Foster might also have been taken as our third keeper). However, if he gets fit, he offers far more than Henderson, Lallana etc. The only person I could think who he could have taken otherwise is Carrick, as he had a pretty good end to the season. However, he has never staked as much of a claim as Wilshire has, so I can see why he is gambling. I'm not sure I'd even take Barkley, as he has had a very poor end to the season. I certainly don't think Roy is world class, but some of the criticism of him is completely unfounded.
So taking any discussion about other players not included in the 26 away now as is irrelevant, I've done a comparison of the replacements to the squad from the 2014 World Cup to this one and as far as I can see this is generally a vastly improved side: I'm sure someone will point out that I have a couple of defensive positions wrong, but the only position I see that is weaker would be Lallana. Otherwise, every single position changed is a big improvement on 2014. I think we'll do ok with this lot - I'd say lose in the semi on pens, Alli missing the vital one and being in the next Pizza Hut ad.
Good point. You have to think at some point Cahill/Smalling will be absolutely destroyed and we will let in 3/4.
Surely Drinkwater/Lallana are the wrong way round? Same with Clyne/Bertrand. But a good comparison, i'd agree although i'd say 2014 Baines is probably better than Bertrand, but not by a lot.
Most of you sound like the pundits putting Watford down before a ball was kicked. However i dont think England will win but I'll put my neck out and say we will make the final but only if the defence can put in some stellar performances. Otherwise no chance. Very much capable of creating and scoring opportunities. Those that write off Rooney, simply have very limited football nous. Its like saying we should drop Deeney. Rooney to England means as much.
If the squad and starting 11 was picked based on recent form then we'd have a chance. But the squad and starting line up will always be the same old faces and that means it'll be the same old outcome. Hodgson is a corporate yes man, a very safe bet for the old boys at the FA. He won't rock the boat too much and will always do his best to come up with some excuses as to why we haven't done very well at any particular tournament. Rooney shouldn't be going, simple as that. It is all too easy to trot out the line about taking him for his experience of Euro's and World Cups but what the fark has that achieved in the past? If there was ever to be an England manager who would pick a squad from scratch and pick on form rather than just tweak the odd one or two then we would have half a chance. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different outcome.
I don't think so, some people seem to have been writing off England's hopes no matter what team Roy picks and/or no matter how well the players he picks perform.
Don't think you will win it, think a lot of English players are overhyped once again for this tournament (bar Kane and Vardy who could probably play for any team at the Euros). Think your squad is on par with the likes of Italy and Portugal. I'd guess you'll get to the quarter finals. Hoping we can get through our group, will be tough in the fight for 2nd and 3rd (assuming Germany win). Take away Lewandowski and I don't think there is anything between us/Poland/Ukraine.
Isn't it that the 4/6 best third place finishers get through? So points, and then goal difference. If we didn't get through the group stages, I would be astonished.
If Rooney has another **** tournament I hope every English man boos him at league games for the rest of his career. Captain, record holder, 'talisman etc. Yet every tournament (which is what international football is about) he's been atrocious. '
