But where do Z-Cars come from? Z'ha'dum?

It's nothing about the age of the song (my choice coming out exactly half way through the Z-Cars era). It's about is it join-innable rather than simply clap the team out to? I couldn't care less if it was a 2015 offering if it had the required effect. Boy you're overly protective of tradition.

No, it should be got rid of so we can make, er, histor-history.

  4. He he. 424 Cares which team he is watching. I hope they never replace ZZ Cars, but I will still be a Watford fan.

    Oooh, that was very Freudian.

  5. I love tradition. What is wrong with it?

You are very dismissive of other people's love of traditions, and how tradition enhances their enjoyment of watching Watford.

Yet Football Club fan bases are built on the legends that gets you started, the match-day emotions that hook you, the good times that make you proud, the bad times where you proved yourself, the traditions that identify you, and the dreams of what you can do in the future.

Tradition has its place, as does innovation and change. Get over it. We are going through the greatest period of innovation and change we have ever been through, even under Elton and Graham (sorry, it is true), so nowt wrong in clinging on to a bit of what is Watford. Remember, we were criticised for losing our identity under the Pozzos, thankfully, in my opinion, they are more committed to tradition than some of our fans.

    Edit

PS Let's work together is a great little song, but it is not better than what we have. Sorry.

PPS ZZ Cars 1962, Let's Work Together 1970, Today 2015; therefor nearly as old as ZZ Cars rather than half way through ZZ Cars era, but you are right, it is not important

Well I for one love it, it gets the hairs standing up on the back of my neck...

All the build up is great, and I love Heart of Courage too, very dramatic, but just for balance, whilst I like to hear an Elton tune along the way, Your Song isn't really uplifting and doesn't create an electric atmosphere either does it?

All fine. I have nothing against tradition at all. Just that, in my view, this particular piece of tradition is well past its sell by date and really doesn't add to our support for our team. It would be good to have a poll though in two parts. Do you want to retain Z-Cars or not? If not, what would you like to see as a replacement?

.. or better keep it straight forward and have the poll in one part so when the choices are laid out Z-Cars can be one of them

  9. I sing along quite a bit, but not like the 1881 - I am more of a "come on you orns", "get in there Deeney" type soloist throughout the game, and more so if no one is singing. I rarely come away from a game without being at least a little bit hoarse. I have been told I won a game for us about ten years ago when the crowd were not singing, and I wouldn't shut up, and in the end the crowd did get its back up, we got back in the game, and we won, in that order. Me and a mate got to the Hull FA Cup game in 1988 just after half time, when we were 2-0 down, (I think, I was off my head), and we just went for it, including berating the sadly quiet crowd, and got them going, and we came back into the game for 2-2 FT.

Those are extravagant claims, but at the time it seemed real, even if I was just some idiot shouting his mouth off on beer and fine wine and likely had nothing to do with it at all.

My voice is there when we need it, and when we don't.

What do you sing when you're at the games?

ZZ Cars lyrics? Its a folk song, many football chants came from folk or music hall tunes (Molly Malone, Sloop John B, Coming Round the Mountain, My Bonnie, My Old Man, etc.); I'd be surprised if there weren't words put to it at football match sometime in the last 151 years. But we don't need words to it; it is the fanfare to the team coming out, its played for about a minute, and it is brilliant.

And yes, I confidently believe completely that I represent a majority of fans regarding ZZ Cars in saying I don't believe Watford fans want ZZ Cars replaced, that has been borne out by history, even though you also want to dismiss that repeated fact.

And please get over the fact that we are a middle class club. Polite clapping at the Vicarage is tantamount to a fan frenzy.

I'll join in Yellow Army, Stand Up if ..., When I was just a little boy ... (just a laugh really - nothing serious) etc. and generally get personally vocal just like you. I'm not a fan of the current Joka song.

I repeat. I have no idea whether Z-Cars is still something the majority wish to see retained and again neither really do you. Your traditional view might very well be in the majority and it might not. On this thread I'd say it's pretty even. If we have a poll we'll see.

Where did I ever say that we were a 'middle-class club'? Just a bit tame maybe that's all. And remember, the Joka was critical after Norwich. So please stop telling me to get over things that I'd never got in the first place.

Z-Cars was on the telly 1962-1978. 1970 was halfway through that era. Not that it matters.

It's old, boring and has little relevance to the modern day fan... move on

Maybe Elton's version of pinball wizard 'that deaf dumb n blind kid sure could play football!'

  15. Sorry, it was me saying we're middle classed. I was suggesting you were not in touch with our home counties roots, by not realising that polite clapping was actually the horns barmy army in frenzy (that is, ZZ Cars had driven them wild); it's seemed to me that the middle class thing was a bit of a running gag on the forum.

I am 100% certain that the majority are happy to keep ZZ Cars, I appreciate where you are coming from, but please don't tell me I don't know. I haven't done a poll, but given people's marmite passions about the tune, if the majority didn't want it, it would be gone by now, or at least a campaign would be on the march. If you feel strongly about it, try starting one. Get a petition going at the ground or even online. I don't really think any of the people on here are really that bothered by ZZ Cars, or maybe they would actually do something. Indeed, I believe that most on here won't be thinking "Now's our chance to get rid", more likely "Oh God, not again".

History, and the overall lack of fan voices calling for change (outside of this forum), make it absolutely reasonable for me to claim that the majority want to keep it. And it is fair also to say that the lack of activism from the members of this forum in terms of getting the tune changed is pretty indicative that even those that think it is a stain on our complexion, would rather just talk about how crap it is than actually do something about changing it; so maybe they're not really that upset by it.

Good luck if you or anyone else choose to take some action; but I don't believe it will get you very far. For sure, if people did get it changed, it would either be only a matter of time until ZZ Cars came back, or we would just have constant suggestions for other tunes because people are not happy with the latest replacement.

  16. Sorry again, I thought you were referring to it's era at the Vic.

  17. Of course, said so myself didn't I? But I do keep going when others fall by the wayside.

Point now understood re our home counties, middle class roots and polite clapping. So, is it true and, if so, are you happy with that then? Is it a badge of honour? Do you recognise that something a bit more raucous might benefit the team? Do you understand that was what our excellent head coach was asking for? Are you happy that a team with more boisterous home support might have more of an advantage?

I have no particular agenda here. Just responded to this thread with a suggestion. The 1881 are the people who drive this sort of stuff and they know about various suggestions. No need for petitions and stuff. But I'm certainly on their and the Joka's side rather than yours methinks.

  20. I'm all for Raucous. I am fully behind Jokanovic's plea to the fans. I find it very frustrating when we are quiet, but things are getting better.

I think the 1881 is a great idea, and it certainly seems to be building up nicely; though I am no fan, like yourself, of the Volare Jokanovic song.

However, I am really happy with a minute and a half of Z Cars, and can honestly say that it makes the hair on my head stand on end, what there is of it, and kicks off the experience for me. But then, I am not a fan of booming music before a game. Yes, I believe it can really pump you up, but it also suppresses singing, and is more cinematic that football. I'd rather be led by the 1881 than a DJ; Like at the play-off games when we wanted to sing our celebration songs, about our players, and instead we've got Quo or Queen played so loud that it's either sing that, or shut up. So, from my point of view, I'd be happy to have Best of the Smurfs on the PA, played quiet enough to let the 1881, and everyone else, build up the songs until three o'clock.

Well it would seem that we're entirely in agreement then except over Z-Cars!

For the record, if we have a poll, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Z-Cars was to win an overall majority. However, it wouldn't surprise me at all either if a.n.other was to win collectively. What would really surprise me is if any one particular alternative was to beat Z-Cars. That would require some sort of campaign on its behalf at least.

Of course, you could try it out by playing something else immediately prior to Z-Cars and see of it added to the experience. How about, now let me think, - Let's Work Together!?

Of course Z Cars would win overwhelmingly in a straight Yes or No. If you put it up against other candidates who would choose those candidates and how many would you have? 100 people would suggest 100 different choices.

  23. Correct.

For what it's worth, I would play the B-Side of the Canned Heat single 'Goin Up The Country'. No i wouldn't. I'd play Louie Louie by the Kingsmen. But one thing's clear, we'd better get this sorted out pretty quick because our home record is abysmal at the moment, and we need to do what we can to give Joka and the Boys a lift.

Not sure how this has cropped up on this thread, but first of all the 'Murder' song is not the 'current' Jokanovic chant. See below for the 'current' Jokanovic chant we are trying to get going:

    I wanna tell you
    I might as well do
About a man who can do anything
    He comes from Serbia
    His name is Slavisa
    Jokanovic Jokanovic Jokanovic

I believe the 'murder' chant first started at Brentford away so not necessarily started by The 1881. In the past few home games, that chant has been sung by a minority of The 1881 for a few seconds before being booed/shhhed by the rest of the section.

Also, The 1881 is not a singular person with one view point on the Z Cars topic, opinions on it differ within the singing section just like they do amongst all of Watford's fanbase.

I'd keep it because I haven't got a better suggestion, nor seen one on this thread. It's one of the traditions I personally like. If it did go we need to replace it with something modern. An Elton song as walk on music would be about as backwards looking as you could get.
