There are several species of sentient animals in the world. Which makes human mistreatment and cruelty, destruction of their habitat all the more distressing.

Trailer for The Criterion Collection remastering of all Olympic films. Some 6600 minutes of coverage and a special edition book. Out for release in December from Amazon USA. Hefty price tag of $260. But if you love sport or the Olympics in particular an ideal Christmas gift.

If you enjoy the 'Golden' age of Hollywood and the musicals this might be for you. Superbly edited by someone who is no doubt in the film industry.

If you’ve never heard it I suppose it won’t mean anything. I was in my early teens when the song was released but I remember a story at the time perpetuated by radio DJs and TV presenters, something about a man drowning, another man just watching so Phil wrote the song. As a youngster I told the tale a couple of times, proud of my musical knowledge. Eminem even mentioned the story it in his song Stan. I Googled it several years ago, as you do, turns out to be an absolute urban myth. What a faking numpty! Fake News!

BBC4 no doubt with the release of the film Bohemian Rhapsody aired two programmes on Queen last week. One on their formative US tour playing songs from News Of The World and a documentary on the creation of Bohemian Rhapsody. No doubt available on BBC iPlayer.

  19. I'm not getting all these fan matchday "vlogs".

I was hesitant to put these in things you hate as I don't hate them as such, I just don't get the love for them. I saw this so thought it was an appropriate place.

I'll admit I've watched the geordie boy one and I'll admit his rage and anger amused me.

But these match day "look at me" videos I don't get the popularity of.

Maybe the people who like them are people who don't go so support watford vicariously through the videos.

But it's mainly just a selfie close up of a person and their thoughts on a matchday cut into a usually pretty long* 15-20 minute montage.

*(I mean maybe modern culture has trained my attention span to be that of a newt and 15-20 minutes isn't considered too long)

I'm completely open to understand why they're popular and have my mind changed. Anyone actually like them and if so why?

Some of them show a story of the day with different angles of the game or crowd that either bring home the memory of the game in an interesting way. Mostly its saddos who think you want to watch them talk bollox.

Historians of the future will have plenty of film and photographic material to work with alongside the staples historians have used to dissect the past. Archaeology, the written record and a visual record that along with the written record as one goes back in time through and past the creation of the printed press can be wildly distorted by oral tradition, propaganda from writers and painters and tapestry makers. The further you go back the more of a reasoned guessing game it becomes until the sole visual and archaeological record are cave paintings, random stone marks, the odd tool and latterly should DNA present haplotype sequencing for instance to study population movement in prehistory with a big enough sample.

As we progress the amount of data available increases. But what would an accurate record of ancient events and visual data of the past that was never photographed and recorded do to the modern frame of mind regarding history. If we could and cannot thanks to the laws of physics practically speaking send such instruments back into time. We have to make an imperfect visualization instead or indeed guess to an extent how people spoke in terms of accent and dialect as language also evolves with time.

All of these considerations make the oral record as of the lady above invaluable and the early films of Mitchell and Kenyon restored by the BFI equally so. Time caught and replayed by the wonder of human ingenuity.

They died doing what they loved. You could call them reckless but for people like this willing to push the boundaries we would all be huddled in caves. That sense of daring and exploration is what makes us move forward.

Incredibly poignant I think. This was filmed back in 2016 I think and broadcast on RTE. A series of interviews and that is all with Irish centenarians all of whom have now passed on. It's a touching memoir of how each and every life has it's uniqueness and moments of sadness, happiness and the absurd. And little pearls of wisdom acquired over that lengthy lifespan. And how love really is the most important thing of all. I suppose that is what makes WH Auden one of my favourite poets with ****inson and her observance of the fragility of life.

Two more excellent channels. I seem to have an addiction to watching old footage and comparing locations then to what they are now. There has been an enormous amount of work going on with the advances in AI to restore old footage for historical reference and for future generations. These two channels are run by amateurs although they may work for professional bodies like the BFI who do a tremendous job in archiving all sorts of film from it's very inception at the end of the 19th century. With Remembrance Sunday coming up a rather poignant look at the battlefield of Lys with German POWs being placed in front of cameras and no doubt relieved it was all over on Armstice Day. And happier footage from the resort of Biarritz from glamourdaze. Colourizing the film, correcting warp, frame speed, removing damage and adding audio makes it feel as the footage was shot yesterday. Especially if you squint with an eye.
