    That's another stupid idea that will only increase the gap between the big clubs with rich owners and the smaller clubs which rely on developing talent to sell on. Hopefully it wouldn't have too much of an impact on us, but there's no way we would be able to afford Category 1 or 2 models, so it probably would reduce our academy's appeal and effectiveness.

  3. This is disgraceful. No guarentee of money if a player, say, breaks his leg.

    This could kill alot of clubs; us included.

    If this happens a lot of teams outside the premier league may be forced to go part time as they survive on developing youngsters and selling them for a profit.

    The premier league is getting far to strong and the whole of English football seems to be geared towards giving the top 20 teams as much of an advantage as possible.

    Who did the PL propose this framework to ?

    This would have to be sanctioned by the F.A. and the Football League.

    Another great idea to make football less competitive. These hothouse super-academies will poach kids from the likes of us, but it doesn't matter how much super-poaching and super-coaching they do, if they don't give them a chance in the first team the kids won't develop. Harry Forrester, anyone?

    So my guess is that this will actually mean fewer kids coming through.

    My thoughts are that this will not hurt Watford FC.

    If we already have the facility in place that is of the category 1 standard (and I think we do), then we will sit a**** the big premier league clubs in this respect. The 2.5 million quoted is an estimated cost to set up, not a fee to pay for running the academy. The telegraph article states;

    Watford are reported to offer 16-20 hours a week.

    The 1.5 hour rule being scrapped hardly scuppers us either - There's 3 of the top 6 premier league sides within London who could poach them already. There are already stories of Watford acadamy products turning down moves to the likes of Man City and Watford is still a more attractivce option given the reliance of our academy to produce first team players. Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham all have a poor record of giving youth team players a go. Even Man Utd and Arsenal force players like Foster, Pennant, Cleverley away.

    The only problem I see is with compensation fees being too low becasue they are overseen by the FA not the FL. Meaning the Academy struggles to pay for itself. However I think this is being over dramatised, How much did we get for Eagles? The true value of what he was worth or not?

    We got Danny Webber, so the jury isn't really out on that one.

    That does seem to be what is written in the article:

    That sounds to me like 2.5 million every year, not a set up cost.
