Does anyone remember a few seasons ago when we had yellow and black goal nets? I think it may have been the first season in the Prem. I thought they were pretty sharp. Why didn't they stay? Did they break rules? Or did most people apart from me hate them? Would anyone want them back?
No rules were broken as many clubs abroad have nets that match the club colours. The posts and bar must be white, netting cannot interfere with the goalkeeper and while colours are permitted there is no room for any logo commercial or related to the club.
This thread sent me down a rabbit hole about football nets.. http://that1980ssportsblog.blogspot.com/2016/11/goal-nets-posts-and-stanchions-of-1980s.html?m=1
That’s nothing. Who remembers the time in the 70s when we painted the base of our goalposts yellow and black?
The stripy nets were too dark and made it harder for our forwards to find the target! When we reverted to white nets Ighalo started scoring again. It was the first Quique season.
Totally agree with all of it. When I started my football journey in the 80s I could normally identify at a glance the country of goal net and in England the club. Such a brilliant innocent joy. Around Euro 96 everything became uniform and the magic was lost. Article misses a trick by not talking of the magnificent billowing goal nets of USA94.
Great link . There’s something sentimental in looking at those old nets that brings a melancholy tear to an old mans eye .
