    Now I feel much better!
Reminded me of when we won 3-0 (?) with Mo Jo scoring twice.

For a long time, the BBC stressed the part of its mandate which was to educate. Hence programmes like Horizon & Civilisation.

At some point the focus seems to have shifted to Reith’s third objective, to entertain. Hence the singing shows & dancing shows & the baking show. Clearly these are much better serviced & produced by the private sector.

Presumably these popular programmes adorn the cv’s of the BBC’s senior staff & ease their path into lucrative private sector jobs.

The story of our state broadcaster does, in some respects, mirror Animal Farm.

I think that’s unfair. There is still plenty of education on the Beeb, and it does it much better than anyone else. Civilisation was recently remade, for one. Blue Planet? Plenty of arts, history and science shows still on BBCs2 and 4.

It has its faults, but the BBC is generally something of which this country can be rightly proud. God knows there’s not much of that around at present.

I disagree regarding the notion that viewing figures aren’t important to the BBC, they are publicly funded and if they spend money on salaries for people like Lineker to present shows nobody watched they’d be absolutely hammered.

Sure they have greater licence to make programmes that aren’t all about ratings, but these shows can’t cost ridiculous sums of money to make and won’t be in prime time slots.

Surely it’s a simple equation that the greater the amount of people who watch BBC shows the greater value people are getting for their licence fees.

MOTD doesn’t necessarily appeal to the average fan on here, but it does appeal to the average Joe bloggs on the street and overall more people watch it and enjoy it than if it was made to please the average Watford fan.

Feeling remarkably fresh after a 6am start yesterday although my shins got battered after that second goal!

Thought we were fantastic and controlled the game really well, we're such a better team without Deeney and Grey (Same team next week please!) Fortunately Wolves didn't have a plan B which made it really quite easy going after the second goal went in.

Good day out and a good result.

    People still watch MOTD?

I feel the same, we did win 3-0 in the FA cup in 1980 a few days after they had reached the League cup final , Great atmosphere in front of over 30,000- sounds almost like yesterday’s emphatic win

Contrast that with winning there 5-0 in December 1983 when Mojo did indeed get a hat trick and George Reilly weighed in with 2 in front of 12,000 in div 1 ( premier league)

The number of repeats on those channels is significant & the quality of original content is noticeably lower than a generation ago. All cultural programmes seem obliged to have the presenter on screen for at least 80% of the time.

The weakest offering is the website. Mail style clickbait litters each page.

Sky Arts shows some interesting stuff.

This isn’t really the place for this debate but I don’t agree that the quality is lower.

People should be careful what they wish for. The BBC is still streets ahead of most broadcasters across the world. My post above regarding On The Buses in Australia being a case in point.

Having also seen the two League Cup gamess, I think the thing that comes out of yesterday’s performance is that we have the strongest depth of squad I’ve ever seen. (I’d still like another striker, though.)

I know. I’m saying that the fact that it was broadcast prime-time on Australian TV the last time I was there suggests that the quality of certain broadcast corporations elsewhere may not match that of the BBC.

Agreed - BBC 1 -4 are largely excellent channels and the radio stations are too. Excellent diversity and quality. Having lived in a couple of other countries, the BBC is absolutely top notch

Match of The Day would be better moved to a longer slot on BBC2 earlier in the evening. Say between 9pm and 11pm for example.

Yep, it's useful for watching the goals and that's it.

If people are so upset they don't show enough footage of our matches there's a simple solution: get off your obese buttocks and actually go to the match. We don't sell out anymore.

Your point seems to be that an ITV show is popular in Australia is testament to the quality of the BBC. If it's not then OK, but you seem unusually vague to explain what you really meant.

Yesterday reminded me of those early 1st Division Graham Taylor days. Of course we had shockers under GT, but the next match there would always be a reaction comeback.

We got that from Watford and a 2-0 at Wolves reminded me of two other memorable wins at Molineux. That 3-0 FA Cup win in 1980 and the famous 5-0 league win 1983.

The referee always plays a part in tight matches. We saw how it all quickly crumbles when you get a bad official making a few bad decisions. I see Wolves are making similar claims I've made myself over Lee Mason, but at least he didn't send off one of their players and give a penalty.

I saw Man City get the most ludicrous decision in their favour (how unusual) against Burnley. The ball was clearly out of play before a cross came in and they scored a goal from it. Burnley would have lost anyway, but the first and second goals in games like those are so influential in directing where the result is going to go. I would have been furious if that had gone against us.

Yesterday was very important to our season. It reminded everyone (myself included) that we are a good side. We will get the occasional bump along the way, we will get bad decisions which will affect our results, but overall we should do very well.

It was great seeing Deulofeu and Pereyra on the same pitch. I'm also liking what I'm seeing from Success. He's really improved (yet another player that has under Gracia). I wanted to see the link up of Kiko and Deulofeu, and although that didn't happen yesterday as Deulofeu was more central, their pace and quality will be harnessed very effectively in this team.

Watford clearly surprised Wolves yesterday, and I think it's a formation that will work well away from home, especially at tough venues.

It just goes to show what a good coach can do with a group of players. Would Silva have made Watford look this good with the players at his disposal? Not a chance imo. He'd have moaned about not having Richarlison, Chalobah, Cleverly and Deulofeu. He would not have managed to make a silk purse from what he had left, that's for certain.

Three very winnable games coming up next, and if (and I'm not counting any chickens here) we pick up 7 or even 9 points that would mean we're sitting on 23/25 points from our first 12 games. It would mean we'd only really need around 12 more points from the remaining 26 games. That would be an incredible position to be in.

It’s really not difficult. My point is that a 40 year old comedy is considered legitimate prime-time fare by an Australian national broadcaster. That’s the type of scheduling (it’s irrelevant who made the programme, it might just as well have been Terry and June) that we might well get if the BBC was commercialised, indeed we do already on satellite channels in the U.K. So, while there are certainly things wrong with the BBC (the website is one), we should be careful what we wish for when we are critical of it. At least it is attempting to make a diverse range of new programmes, some at least of which meet the Reithian values. That’s more than can be said for a large number of broadcasting corporations worldwide.

    Anyway, back to the match...

He should have been penalised early on against Arsenal (actually the most blatant one of the three), but the ref missed/bottled it. That's three in three matches. Conceding penalties is a costly business. His decision-making when the pressure is on is surely questionable. 95% of the time he looks good, but he has to work on this apparent impetuousness.

After personally suggesting goals on Sunday is a much better alternative to MOTD for analysis, predictably we were last and it was all about Wolves. Pardew did compare Peyrera’s finish to Pele though.

Cracking day yesterday despite the atrocious seating. We looked a strong unit and Wolves struggled to cause problems at all Masina and Deulofeu had great games as did Success who deserves to start against Huddersfield on Saturday. Wolves look a decent side lacking a half decent striker.
