Terry Garbett in the 60s was known as "Blower" - presumably for his habit of puffing his cheeks out when running - rather than the obvious.

Duncan Welbourne's nickname was "Chopper" - however it was not unique as Chelsea's Harris also carried that monicker. My Dad & I stood along the half-way line at White Hart Lane for the 1970 FA Cup SF - right in front of us was the legendary Welbourne-Harris "tackle/collision", which set church bells ringing for miles around, showered "The Shelf" with rust from the roof and frightened every bird in Norf London for miles around. Rumour has it the ravens at the Tower had to be netted to stop them flying away.

I still have the bone splinters from Harris' lower leg embedded in various parts of my body.

  12. I was a bit young but I also remembered a few people using the
'Bites yer ankles' monicker (territory of Norman Hunter) on a few occassions with reference to Duncan. My family knew him from the Supporters Club events and I saw him more off the pitch than on it; he seemed one of the less boisterous of the players, so I was quite surprised to find out his reputation as I grew up. I'd always thought of him as a kindly uncle!!

So in answer to your question.. no we dont have any witty/humorous player nicknames. Just your standard play on names.

PS and we've never really had any standout beast/psycho players over the years either.. we are Watford after all :)

Wasn't Ross Jenkins known as Big Ross?

And Chris Iwelumo as Big Chris.

In fact on Boxing Day games we used to sing 'We wish you a Big Chrismas'.

It never caught on though .

    Yes, definitely.
It's a clear memory as a kid hearing a bloke shouting 'Come on Digger' as Barnes advanced on goal v Leicester and not having a clue who this 'Digger' was.

Jason Lee was Pineapple Head, even when he shaved it all off.

  23. RookeryDad

As a slight digression, is Femenia the first Hornet to be known by his first name on the shirt (viz Kiko)?

Also, why does he use the form ‘Kiko F’?

More Kikos to join in the Jan window?

Btw, I appreciate there’s Richarlison but didn’t he sign after Kiko? It’s also almost like a Germanic compound noun with first, second & third names all combined into one word.

Cliff Holton was the first "Big Fella", the first Ross Jenkins was "The Long Man". Amongst many in the Rookery, Stewart Scullion was known as "P1ss 'em Sculls".

I believe Homus Erectus was the first "Big Man" averaging a height of well over 6 ft, when walking the earth over 300k years ago.

Unfortunately long ball football hadnt been invented then so it was an opportunity missed.

  27. Stevohorn

I think it may have been both.
Only i remember reading in the brochure produced when Jenkins retired that when he reached a hundred goals for the club he was presented with a tankard from the Rookery enders engraved "Congratulations on reaching 100 goals big fella"

  28. wfcmoog

I believe John Cother was known as "Darkie" in a rather unfortunate case.

  29. wfcmoog

Reginald Williams was so good we named him "Skilly."

His grandchildren, Grant Cornock and Daniel Grieves who later played for the club , failed to earn the same moniker

  30. Keighley

    Ineffective?
