Which club would we be mirroring right now?
Maybe might have got relegated at some point but comeback ?
None of the above. Would still be a mid table Championship club I reckon. Why are all the teams in the poll League one or below?
Are you an ostrich? Bassini had the club on it's knees.
Because the person who set the poll up is incapable of reasoning and thinks the only owners in world football are Pozzo and Bassini?
The Pozzo's were brilliant and saved the club. The best ownership set up since Elton John. There's no rival to them and what they've done. However, you can only be judged on what you're doing right now and what you're planning on doing in the near future. What is the projection and how are you going to deliver that? Past history will only get you so far. Credit in the bank if you like. But the past two years cannot be ignored. There have to be reasons for it, and the fans deserve to know why these mistakes keep occurring. Has there been a change at the top? Is the enthusiasm for the Watford project diminishing? Are Watford no longer a very high priority?
No one is saying the Pozzo's weren't our saviour at the time they took over the club, but is that still the case today? Things change and if Watford are to gain promotion and prosper as a club, then far better decisions have to be made at the correct time. A clear understanding of where the team is lacking and a plan to improve that issue. They were oblivious to the defensive failings last season. They seem oblivious to the issues up front. These are things which are concerning. You won't gain promotion if your entire central striking unit muster only 2 or 3 goals in half a season, as has been the case so far this season.
To question the leadership is healthy, to blindly back someone because they were good once, is not.
Kings Langley FC.
Man Utd fans were probably saying this about Ferguson on Internet forums in 2006.
I speculate that since relegation was confirmed and the main third party lender (XXIII Capital) to the club announced in September that they were running down their operation ie we want our money back- they have been calling the shots with Gino as to who you can buy etc.
The Pozzos have been great as you say so why the change. If you stayed in PL then mistakes like overpaying for players or issuing long term contracts can be covered up by the revenue and profiling of players to get the maximum price. The combination of Covid affecting player sales, reduced TV money from relegation and your main backer wanting out has done for us (I also feel that's why Pearson was sacked once the horror of being relegated became a reality with the resulting financial implications)
We have yet to see for the accounts for last season so we only have June 19 to go on but Gino used the lender market as it was from 2016 to 2020 to find someone to loan us money whilst a PL club-sure there would have been a Loan Agreement but I would be amazed if it didn't have a relegation clause in it that made it "on demand". Us then borrowing against the parachute money from Barclays showed our urgent need to plug the gap between income and wages but as the security to XXIII Capital remains in place I suggest monies remain owing.
Most other clubs around us now in the Championship either have no debt (Norwich, Swansea) billionaire owners (Stoke, Bristol City) or rely on loans from their owners (BMuff, Blackburn, Brentford, Reading, Boro and Preston). We remain alone in having external debt and no meaningful financial support from the owner bar using Udinese to send us players which is unique and may yet help us get promoted.
Didn't we finish 9th or 11th or something, the season before they took over?
Burnley, pretty obvious
Yes - we always seemed to do ok despite appearing to be in a mess off the pitch!
Won 7 away games in a row and Sean Murray was the new kid on the block....what happened to him?
Like under Lewington - 2 semis finals and 2 fairly solid seasons with kids and older pros who were actually professional like Allan Nielsen and Marcus Gayle.
I mean we did only score 12 goals away from in one of them but that is quite good compared to this season!
Bet the football wasn't any worse and we made efforts to attack at least too..
Well people said they hated the way they play and wouldn't want to watch it so just as well we're not?
The majority of football club takeovers are unsuccessful, look into it you will be shocked. I've mentioned 5 similar sized clubs who have all been taken over at a similar time to the Pozzo takeover here, and all 5 clubs have absolutely capitulated. Given the way things went at Watford with those amateur c*nts Russo and Bassini, it is very reasonable to suggest that we could have been sold to the type of idiots that ran those 5 clubs down the divisions.
We won the lottery with the Pozzo takeover. Yes we've had an underwhelming 18 months or so, but they deserve the respect and patience of every Watford fan.
First part of post true/possible. Final paragraph is laughable. The point is you only put in your poll clubs with owners who have performed poorly. It’s quite possible when the accounts for 2021 are published in a years times we are in a worse position than when they bought us (see other thread).
Blindingly stupid thing to say considering the fact that Ferguson did not own the club.
This is the best era in the clubs modern history, and you're talking about "worse position than when they bought us". Utter rubbish. Go argue with your ex wife
Read the accounts for 2019 cup final season (you’re likely not capable). Then imagine what they look like for 2020 relegation season (not available yet). Then think what it will look like in 2021 championship accounts (not yet done).
A grammatically correct sentence requires a verb, a subject , and must begin with a capital letter and end in a punctuation mark.
And it also requires definitely not putting a space after a word and before a comma.
I always thought we were about the same as Oxford United before the Pozzos.
Similar size ground. Similar colours. Similar crowds. Similar success rate.
I reckon that's where we'd be now. Middling Div 3 with dreams of promotion to the Championship.
3 sided ground too of course.
You didnt say Bas would still be in charge. Explain this alternate timeline you are envisioning so I can make an informed decision.
Fergie is the reason United were successful. The Pozzo's are the reason we've been successful over the past 8 years.
I am likening this moronic anti Pozzo rhetoric to what would have been a similarly moronic anti Ferguson rhetoric after Man Utd had an underwhelming mid 2000's
I'm very qualified when it comes to reading accounts. I have total faith the current board has the club on steady financial ground. This isn't Ashton and Simpson we're talking about
If you’ve read the accounts and understood them then you’ll know that post relegation and Covid we certainly aren’t on a steady financial ground.
If we don't go up we will sell the likes of Sarr, Deulofeu, Cucho, Hughes, Femenia, Ngakia Wilmot etc etc. That's how Championship clubs make money. We will rebuild the team with cheap/clever signings as we did 2012-15.
But we haven't been successful over the last 8 years. You are presumably also inventing your 'moronic anti Ferguson rhetoric', with little to no no proof, yes?
Kind of hoping they were the future!
The others yes but that would require a big re-build and wlel we won't be allowed to get 10 players from Udinese to help us.
Well i think we did well between 2015-19 getting promoted and staying up fairly easily but yes the last 18 months or so has been a mess.
Exactly, our period of success could not possibly be considered to be further than between sometime in 2014 and sometime in 2019, and realistically the Pozzo have been making mistakes routinely for the best part of two years now - more if you trace back some of the decisions that led us to this point, as many of us have on here already.
I agree with you. I pointed this out on another thread which talked about a suggestion of someone forming a protest group. I said 'protest group, what for?'
I also pointed out that people moaning about signings, managers, players etc are part and parcel of forums and will never go away, so let the Pozzos carry on doing what that they are doing and let the moaners moan and the more optimistic folk be …….. optimistic. There will always be people who will criticize about these things, sometimes reasonably sometimes unreasonably. That wont go away whoever is in charge.
Exactly. Let's go on being a poxy little club with fans that push the poxy little club mentality.
You praise and laud the owners who have spent the last 8 years telling you to stop viewing ourselves as a poxy little club.
I guess fans like you have selective hearing in that regard.
Oxford would be horrified by this. They've won a major honour that we can only dream of.
Someone like Rochdale is a better comparison.
