I haven't caught up on all the replies yet so forgive me if I'm repeating what's been said elsewhere. Obviously, the usual caveats apply re individual taste, year of wine, etc etc but I would say most people (me included) like a nice bottle of Pinot Noir. Or a Gevrey-Chambertin? Or a Barolo?
Now I have a craving for wine and cheese at 11pm, which I'm blaming you for.

Just after reading some post by an uncultured oaf who boasts about drinking wine out of screw top bottle (not even in a paper bag in the park with the local outdoor wine guild) remembered your original post:

What did you bu and from where?

I’m sure I’ve read anything below £5 on a bottle of wine isn’t worth it because it’s mostly tax and the actual wine is only something like 30ps worth.

There is actually an argument for spending £15-£20 because you’re then getting at least £5 worth of wine rather than 30p.

The supermarkets normally do a decent job of selection and at £20 you shouldn't get a snotter and could get something rather good.

Malbec I find is not the best to drink on it's own, better with steak. So you've got £20 left in your budget for a couple of pieces of fillet and some oven chips.

Malbec goes well with a cheese board too.

Depends: I was 'taught:' red wine with wood and white (with a screw cap) with polymer?

I tried out the Mad Squirrel tap room in St Albans the other day, had at least 15+ different interesting beers/ciders on tap and a good choice of cans/bottles as well as doing nice food. I'm not from Watford, but I was thinking it's odd that nothing of that ilk exists in Watford, unless I just don't know about it? Even just a pub that does more than just your classics (peroni, fosters, guiness etc)

There is one in Amersham. They bought the shop next door and knocked through and now do pizza as well. You could sustainably live there for months.

Won't be able to get out the door at the end of it though, so it rather needs to be years.
