Where to Eat in Watford?

I have been given some tickets for tomorrow's match and 4Cyclones, Aethelred the Unready and I will be coming over a little bit early to have a walk around the town.

For once, my wallet is reasonably fat and spongy and so I thought maybe I'd take them for a spot of lunch before the game.

Anyone got any good suggestions for somewhere to eat? Any recommendations? Don't want anything too heavy, nor anything that is too expensive or "not for the likes of us".

Decent pub would be alright and we could have a pint then too.

The various "mixed grills" with a whole chicken from this place with bread(s), chips/rice are extremely well-priced and pretty good cookin' for three. (Dry but near to the 1 Crown)

If you want to do something exotic the Japanese sushi place above the market (there are a few places up there all seem to get a good trade) is "fun" and their chicken katsu curry (of you're not up for the sushi/sashimi) is very, very acceptable (and quite wallet-light for what you're getting). (Dry but not too far from the 'Spoons).

For a treat - at the end of the shops, past the pond there's an ice-cream parlour - it ain't cheap but if you're with kids/ladies they will enjoy it.

Might not be everybody's idea of a good pub, but I don't mind going in the Moon under water (Wetherspoons) before the football.

Cheap food and not too bad a price for a beer, and usually a decent footie crowd in there but nothing in the way of trouble.

Also - don't know how "techie" you are Clive - but the Wetherspoons app allows you to order from your table, so you don't have to queue up. Every time I've done this, I've been served my drink within 2/3 minutes, and the food has followed within another 5. Great for being lazy, hungry and thirsty:D.

All of the foodies I know don't have any issues with what the 'Spoons serve. They all, usually, preface any discussion about it with "For the price..." even after looking up what a Zebu is.

Why are people still recommending Clive places to eat some 48 hours after he's got back home?

Well thanks to the eldest, Aethelred, being unready on Saturday morning, we didn't get to leave until quite late. Then we spent another 45 mins sitting in traffic up St Albans Road and then about half an hour trying to find our way from the top floor of the car park out through the labyrinth of Intu via (eventually) Primark and being able to get my bearings again (!), we ended up having a polystyrene tray of chips each out of Fry-Days along with the aforementioned £3.00 rip off bag of fruit pastels bought in the ground.

Next time we'll try some of the suggestions - thanks anyway!

Yeah they were working like trojans in there. Boom, boom, boom, boom - chips, chips, chips, money, money. No messing about. They ate through that queue.

Chips weren't bad at all either. Sometimes you get them from a chippy when they're busy and they haven't given them enough time frying and they're still a bit raw in the middle. Not these though. Properly cooked right through.

If so, maybe time to give him a new forum title. Something like "The Codfather"?

The Intu company is being taken over and I was hoping the Watford shopping centre would be renamed something less daft - but I gather that the Intu name will continue.
