I think TV companies might have a case to reduce their payment for this season on a pro-rata basis. But they’d have to be very wary about their public image in doing so given this is a public health issue.
As for the first question, I’d unanimously say no. You can’t just lengthen a contract without agreement from both sides.

As @Ybotcoombes said above, I would think any decision on this season will be made after consultation with all PL clubs. I suspect the preferred option will be to delay the Euros for a year and finish the season if at all possible, behind closed doors if necessary. If the season cannot be finished, I suspect the Premier League Clubs will take a different view to yours, with Liverpool being 25 points ahead and only 2 wins away from officially being Champions. I would think the most likely outcome is also that Leeds and WBA come up, no one is relegated and then 4 or 5 clubs are relegated the following season/s.

You think in 2 weeks time there will be no player cases and none in isolation ?

True, no impact on the financial framework or structure of next season ........other than the teams actually in the prem and the lost TV money.

  5. It's only theoretical obviously, but if they all self quarantined now, and kept isolated, in 2/3 weeks we should have 20 clear squads, no?

  6. This season is already wrecked. There is no logical reason to deliberately wreck the next one too.

Play it on FIFA. 11 vs 11 on Pro Clubs, each player playing as themselves. Problem solved.

Even with no training, wives, kids, parents, neighbours etc - I can't see this being the case. No training or tactics meetings for next games etc ?

  9. Quarantine the whole squad management and ancilliary staff. Anyway, it's not going to happen so let's leave it there instead of going down a HB-1 style plughole.

There is talk of finishing this season when they can then just having everyone play each other once "next season"...

Or dumping the Cup competition to make room for league games.

Given that everything we're hearing is that the UK is two weeks behind Italy / Spain why don't we wait to see what they come up with and do the same.

Unless it involves us going down / L*ton not going down.

The only fair way is Bournemouth get relegated and Leeds dont get promotion.

Otherwise the only option is some sort of battle royale/hunger games scenario.

I rarely agree with that soppy tart Brady but I think the season is gone and begin again in August.
Two up from the Championship I suppose and reconfigure in subsequent years.

I also think that squeezing in the remaining fixtures effectively at or near the beginning of next season might well be the catalyst for the demise of the League Cup.
The other measure that could be taken would be to abandon the UEFA Nations League this time round, especially if the Euros are moved to 2021. That would free up all those international breaks before Christmas which could be used to make up time for the 2020/21 season.

I'd be pleased with both the League Cup and Nations League being scrapped.

Talk of giving any teams with games outstanding the three points, then whichever are the three at the bottom after that, get relegated.

Saw it on the Villa forum somewhere.

I really can’t see the government allowing people to take months off work because of this. Probably in 2 or 3 weeks people will be told if you can’t prove your ill you have to work. If everyone else is working footballers will soon be back training and probably playing behind closed doors. As soon as Arteta and Hudson-Odoi are back and the league has seen how it has evolved, especially if it is no worse than a normal flu things should start getting back to normal.

I’d be perfectly content with the season ending and all results/standings being void, before basically just hitting reset next season and starting again.

I wonder what they’d do with the prize money though? Hand it out according to league position at the end of the season? I’d imagine that clubs like us, who tread a tight line financially, we’d be relying on prize money as part of our budget.

Some teams are - some taking time off.

They will probably treat this like an International break ...

Until we find out the season will be out of action for a few months!

They should stop playing football entirely and forever.

That way we can all find something constructive to do with our time.

Over the years I could've learned a new language just in the time spent watching our corners only reach the first defender.

In the old days, when winning the Football Pools was the equivalent of the Lottery jackpot. When frozen and waterlogged pitches meant a lot of cancellations would make the pools invalid. A panel of experts decided what the results would be. Fortunes were won or lost without a ball kicked. Simply based on the opinion of some old blokes sat in a room with just their knowledge and experience to help them decide the results. Today a sophisticated computer programme could do the same thing. So why not use that to create a set of final standings?

Like all alternatives it's output would be subject to challenge. To delay the conclusion of the current season by several months, will create many new variables. Players availability, etc Would all require rule changes and mitigations. And also subject to challenge.

If you cancel the whole league for a spring break of more than four weeks, I think is bordering on nullifying it. Restart in August play the remaining games to end the season in November. That is no fairer than saying the leagues finish now.

The FA Cup surely won't happen now. So why attempt to restart the league? But how do you allocate points to teams who have played fewer games. For me that's simple just take the standings back to the point where every team had played the same number of matches. Match 28 for the Premier League. That's fact, not conjecture. But can you see the current bottom three accepting that?

So no decision will be respected except the one that disadvantages no one. Which might be the promotion of the current guaranteed promotion spaces in each league. Relegate no one. Start the new season but scrap the league cup, scrap FA Cup replays, to make some space for additional fixtures as each league increases in size, then reduce back down by additional numbers of relegations. That would mean five relegations next year.

People keep suggesting this idea of allowing teams to be promoted, despite the fact they haven’t completed the designated number of games, and yet not relegating teams on the same basis. I just don’t get the logic of this. If you can’t complete the season, either you accept both promotion and relegation on a reduced number of games (very unfair in my view because you’ve changed the rules) or you have neither - effectively voiding the season. Unfortunate but certainly fairer.

I think that given the extraordinary circumstances they should also be able put the technicalities aside and come up with some common sense solutions. Liverpool are clearly going to win the league so it would be unfair to deny them that. It would be unfair to relegate teams and it would be unfair to deny teams promotion. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

Yeah but the same reason that makes it unfair to relegate teams now surely makes it unfair to promote teams too?

I think it depends how long it lasts. The peak isn't expected for 10-14 weeks so every week we're going to see an increase until then. I presume. Then, hopefully if the chief scientist is correct it'll slowly fade away. Assuming play can begin in June, you can't just expect players to play if they've had no matches and I imagine limited training for 3 months.

I don't see how the top 2 can be promoted, the promotion money should be shared with EFL clubs at risk of financial collapse.

Why ruin next season as well? That's what will happen if play doesn't start again until June/July. As said before, there is also a world of logistical issues that come with that as well in terms of staff and player contracts, loans, player fitness, the virus likely still lingering even at that point in time etc.

Norwich, Villa and Bournemouth have not finished the full season to be relegated, or us for that matter, and in the same breath the likes of Leeds have not actually achieved promotion. The fairest, easiest and most logical solution is to void it off and get back to normal in August.

Yes, it'd upset some clubs, but it will cause the least long term disruption.

Depending on the contracts, that wouldn't be the case if it costs PL clubs £100mil odd from voiding the TV deal.

But people aren’t really losing out they’re just gaining, the only people losing out are the clubs in the playoffs, but they only had a shot at it anyway. As long as nobody is in a worse position, does it matter if some end up in a better position? Or at least just in the position they would’ve in all likelihood been in anyway?
