I will explain myself if you did not understand my point. There is no point voiding the season and starting a new one. The virus will not suddenly go away just because we start a new season, football could be suspended for the rest of 2020. Therefore, in order for the entire season to not be a waste of time we should resume this season as soon as its safe to continue playing football even if it means making next season shorter or just abandoning football for next season. This obviously does not suit Watford but its very unfair on a lot of teams who have worked all season for a goal and its just lets restart all your wins and points attained were meaningless. What exactly is the point of preparing for a new season? Are transfers going to occur when football is at risk of being cancelled for next season too? Football fans will not be buying season tickets. What meaning does starting a new season give anyway if there is a risk from that season ending. Planning for next season becomes meaningless until its safe to resume playing football and that may not necessarily be at the start of next season. In my opinion just suspend this season until its safe to resume playing football and then continue this season.

Could be that its 2020-2021 that gets void and never happens. We finish this season from in December. Then for 5 months have a champions league style cup. Seeded 4 groups of 5, 8 games. Winners of groups have semi finals then final for champions, spits out 3 champions league places. 2nd places have semis and final for europa league. The 4 bottom clubs playoff to leave 3 relegated. Fa cup could be altered or rearranged or cancelled.

The solution is all premier league footballers get given covid19 as healthy men to assess the effects for scientific purposes. When they recover, they'll be immune and can restart the season behind closed doors.

You may be right. And yet Klopp has released a statement to supporters which struck exactly the right note, without any hints of “woe is us”. I do realise, however, that acknowledging that Klopp actually seems to be a pretty decent bloke doesn’t fit the narrative of many on here.

Whatever we do will have to be inline with what ever happens around Europe for those competitions.

you can’t really have lots of different compromises in lots of different countries finishing at different times and weird half seasons and it all being a mess

we either postpone and finish or they just void and restart when the next season is due.

either way this virus will still be around

Is this the same decent bloke who is currently accusing atletico madrid of not playing football properly because they beat them home and away?

Just LOL at the people who have fallen for his act.

It was carefully worded. Not once were the words ‘cancel’ or ‘void’ used. I’m not sure the same tone would be struck if that were to happen.
I’ve already seen Scott Brown and Neil Lennon demanding they be named Champions in Scotland should cancellation happen to the season.

I just cannot fathom how you can award trophies and titles for things that haven’t been won. There are all sorts of stories that the PL are worried about ‘sporting integrity’ if they void the season - to me, nothing would go more against sporting integrity than handing out the biggest accolades or punishments (relegation) for something you didn’t achieve.

Anything too complex - won't happen
Anything that screws the big clubs - won't happen
Any reduction in TV or gate money - won't happen

2 year season with Liverpool given the 19/20 title feels like it has integrity
EFL can decide how they respond - they can freeze / do the same / do what they want but there will only be 3 places for their teams in May 21 - so both champions and a play off between 2nd placers seems ok (assuming the teams are different) or simply they could adopt the 2 year league idea

  9. I can't even see next season starting cleanly - the experts talk is this not peaking for 10-12 weeks which takes us to June, and pre-season trips abroad may not happen at all, let alone finishing this one in a smart way.

I don't think it will be anything other than voided.

I can see other sports, like F1 also being voided.

I think they will suspend relegation from all leagues, promote top two as if stands and then have 5 down 3 up the following year in all divisions. Only real losers are those clubs in the playoff places but they are only being denied a 1 in 4 chance.

I really can’t see it being disputable that Liverpool are this seasons champions. European places awarded as per league table now. Fa cup and champions league void.

To fail to relegate, because the season hadn't finished, but go ahead and promote WBA and Leeds when their season hadn't finished, seems very inconsistent. Fulham were 6 pts behind with 9 games to go and WBA had drawn and lost their last 2 - entirely possible they would have been caught.

Can this be decided without PL owners voting , I thought I had seen somewhere that any action would need their support

The fairest and most likely outcome is that the season will be completed at the earliest opportunity, whenever that is.

I think the only sensible option left will be to void the season. It is regrettable but if the virus pans out as promised then football may not be possible until the summer or even the autumn. I get that Leeds, WBA etc will have grievance but most sensible people can see this is a once in a lifetime scenario. Sometimes things are more important than sport and money.

  15. I don't see that as remotely likely if it impacts next season / the financial framework of a football season.

If it turns out to be three up five down, thats us screwed. Going by this season alone, i can only see us struggling again.

With no time for possible transfers, contracts ending etc it will be quite a mess. Not just for us, but every club.

The country isn't going to come to a standstill for 6 months. So nib don't see a good enough reason why it can't be played behind closed doors.

Obviously it's not the same and the fans are a huge part of it - but realistically 90% of fans watch games on TV.

If the games can't be played as normal I'm sure the billions of pounds of TV money from continuing the season can fund daily testing for footballers. They could even fly them out to a quarantined camp to finish the season off on a tournament. 45 minute games and twice the frequency???

Also introduce yellow cards for coughing, and replace goal difference with coronavirus cases.

The calender is an artificial construct. Why don't we just stop at 14th March until it all blows over? It could be 14th March for the next 60+ days.

Then just carry on with everything staying on their current dates. Christmas might end up in the summer but that's probably going to happen one day with climate change anyway.

I'm one of those that prefers a way be found to fully complete the season currently suspended, even if it means kinda tacking it on to roughly the beginning of the next one, before the promotions and relegations happen, with perhaps a few weeks gap in between.

Too much of the current season has already been played and the remaining fixtures could be reasonably managed in 6 weeks (whether that be later in the spring or in the summer). There isn't another fair way of determining the outcomes.

The few extra fixtures would also provide a handy excuse to finally axe the pointless Carabao Cup.

The only slight complication in all this would be where/how to squeeze in the transfer window. It might need to be another relatively brief one, say 6-7 weeks, taking place in the few week gap between the "end" of the previous season and the beginning of the new one, with a few weeks at the beginning of the season with the window still open. Not ideal, but should be alright as a one off before a more normal routine is found again.

  22. That's a bit harsh - I think we'd sign at least one u17 prospect that we'll loan out to some random Belgian club and never see again.

The issue is player availability due to decimated quarantined squads rather than lack of crowds.

  25. Not if you void this season, and start next season normally.

  26. Start next season on the same points as now (let Villa play their game in hand as season opener) - carrying over the points will mean that this season's achievements and failures will not go completely unrewarded or unpunished. There are of course arguments about who had the easiest run-in etc, but that is relatively minor.

  27. TBF if all squads and ancilliary staff are quarantined and kept isolated once 'clear' they could resume a hermetically sealed season in a couple of weeks.

I don't think this works as well as the "two year - double season" option, where teams place each other 4 times. Bournemouth and Brighton probably have tougher run ins than us, but they would avoid those games (many of which we have already played).

Is there any concrete evidence of immunity? I hope there is but I havent seen any

  30. Depends when they can start playing again. Thinking about it, once you've completed 'this' season's fixtures, why can't you stop, declare winners and losers, and carry on with next season?

It’s entirely disputable that Liverpool are ‘Champions’ - they haven’t won anything?
They would have won it but there’s no ‘Duckworth-Lewis’ in football. Teams can’t be rewarded for things they haven’t achieved.

The same with the leagues below. And I think European places should go to teams who qualified last season for the same reasons.

If the current season is ongoing after June 30, will player contracts be automatically lengthened?

Contracts finish at the end of June so anyone whose deal ends on June 30, 2020 (the year, not 8.20pm!), can, at the moment, leave his club and join another while the season is still in play.

It's also been said there is the possibility TV companies can withhold money due to a breach of contract if the 2019/20 competition is left unfinished.

  33. The PL would be idiots if there wasn't a force majeure clause in the TV contract

This occurred to me too. Although with a bit more thought I figured both the league and the broadcasters have a mutual interest in keeping a working relationship going forward, so I’m pretty sure a settlement would be agreed if 19/20 is cancelled.
