Oh yeah, misread. It still underlines that Pool hadn't been the same since the winter break though.

No. Because they don’t exist anymore.

No I'm not joking. It would have clearly been more remarkable if we'd have pulled off such a result at the same time as Liverpool were actually playing well. Liverpool weren't very good on the day, had not been very good leading up to it, and have not been very good since either.

The winter break truly did them no favours and they've generally looked tired and out of ideas since.

ref 10% critically ill - account for those with chronic conditions who require life-preserving treatment (diabetes, asthma, COPD, heart-disease), those suffering life-ending conditions (cancers) and the demographic of the Uk that 20% is over 65; you'll see a conflation of factors leading to a health care train-wreck. So, yup 10% won't require critical care as a direct result of CV19 but 10% of the population may require critical care as a result of a secondary condition...clearly not in one-sitting - PHE modelling is predicted over 4-6 months. A key enabler in all of this is step-down care to keep patient through flow moving and to keep ICU units free - hence the urgent need to build treatment facilities. A recall a figure of 25000 extra beds required.

    edited to add:

In his opening remarks at the March 3 media briefing on Covid-19, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated:

“Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.

Isn’t the word ‘reported’ the biggest issue with that statement?

Do you understand why the opening statement of 3-4% is ancient news? It is directly related to how many people you test. If you continue to use this you are simply scaremongering. It's the figure that led Arakel to declare there would be 500 million global deaths when he compared to Spanish Flu.

Of course people will continue to be critically ill from other illnesses. 500,000 people die every year in the UK. But that's not what you said - you said 10% of the population will be critically ill from Covid related issues. If want to put your credibility on the line and say there will be 6.5 million UK people critically ill within 4-6 months then be my guest. We both already know you are wrong.

You need to stop being hysterical and alarming the populace. I hope you aren't posting your frankly cherry picking statistics all over Facebook and Twitter. Be responsible.

But on the flip side, it means we never hired QSF back for a second stint in charge of a Premier League season either.

I'm not on any social media platforms.
I've been working on CV19 since mid-Jan when it was limited to Hubei/Wuhan (some exposure in Henan) - well before it hit UK MSM- incl processing first hand reports from the city when it was already in total lock down with police/mil enforced curfews.
PHE modelling 20% of infections will require hospitalisation.
    Mortality rates for UK from Imperial College modelling date is: 50-59 0.6%; 60-69 2.2%; 70-79% 5.1%; 80+ 9.3%.
There are 11m 65+ year olds, with 4.7m 80+ year olds.

No, I'm taking it very seriously having been directly involved for nearly 3 months and seen the UK slow to react. The flu won't adversely affect everybody; the economic impact will hit us all, for the next decade...

What do you mean you are "directly involved"? You are quoting out of date statistics with obvious limitations. No professional would do that.

Richard Murphy is "directly involved" in economics in his blog but he is unqualified and thankfully completely irrelevant. What is your "direct involvement" here?

  14. neraksarrab

I'd say academic data commissioned 10 days ago is a current as it gets. I widely circulated that UK would go into lock down last mon; the next phase will be overt military assistance to civil police.

Sorry if you don't understand the limitations of the 3-4% mortality rate then I don't know what to say. Do you understand why it may be flawed?

What is your "direct involvement" that you keep claiming? You claimed earlier that 10% of our population would be critical with COVID related symptoms. 6.5 million people.

NHS director is targeting 20k deaths as a good result. Frankly you have no credibility.

There's a difference between hospital care (up to 6.5m) and mortality (up to 9% for elderly).
But okay - keep me updated - let's chat again in a month (and again, this season is finished).

Yes they were in terrible form coming into that game having won every league game in 2020. Maybe not as fluent as pre Xmas but still winning every league game. I recall how everyone saw as strong favourites for that game given their poor form.

The football is irrelevant. What is relevant is you claiming expertise and scaremongering. Again - what is this "direct involvement" you talk about? And you seem to be fleet of foot between "hospital care", "critical" and "needing some kind of treatment".

Well actually, although I didn't think we'd win I thought we had a decent chance of a draw given their team and form, so it wasn't that significant a shock to me that they didn't play well:

For about a day after the game Watford were praised in the media for their performance but thereafter it was: “How could Liverpool have lost? Why did they play so badly?” The truth is that, although Liverpool were not at their best on the day, Watford had a perfect game plan and, more importantly, every player executed it perfectly.

Nah, they had been horribly out of form in 2020 and a were a thrashing waiting to happen. Home games don’t come much easier :D

Suggestions that they are looking at a World Cup style end of season with teams kept in hotels and playing the games at neutral grounds behind closed doors.

I can see this sort of thing happening and everyone would be up for it. TV companies, sponsors, even a majority of clubs that are playing for nothing or playing for promotions and Championships.

I was thinking we'd be disadvantaged in this, seeing as we have 5 home games and 4 away. Clearly teams playing at home have the edge. As luck would have it though, all those clubs down the bottom also have 5 home games and 4 away. Villa even have 6 home 4 away.

Seeing as it's a level playing field in the home and away stakes, I see this could certainly happen.

That's no more satisfactory than voiding the season for me. Whatever happens, whether we go down or not, 2019/20 will always have an * next to it in the record books and be considered to be a failed or pantomime season.

I think the only issue with playing behind closed doors is what has been raised before and that is how do you stop people gathering near the ground or in groups to watch the games on TV?

I can't, for example, see all Liverpool or Leeds fans watching the games that could see them win their leagues isolated in their own homes.

The idea is as good as any for finishing the league but it should only happen if there is no risk to public health.

  25. hornetboy1

For me, voiding the season is the best option, but it's unthinkable for the moneymen.

I still think we'll disadvantaged playing at neutral grounds. Playing Newcastle, Leicester, Norwich and Southampton at home in front of our own fans is far better than playing in a neutral venue with no support. You could say playing Burnley and West Ham would improve our chances of a good result and I would agree. But we're still down on the deal on balance.

I don't think it will make any difference where we play Arsenal, Chelsea or City. The result will probably be the same.

If we play behind closed doors, then I think Watford will not get as many points as had they played out their games in the normal way.

    GoingDown "The Stability"

And this is another reason why it's highly unlikely to happen. As we've seen, people are idiots.

We're three months from the date UEFA have dictated things have to be finished. We're at least 6-8 weeks from rules possibly being lessened. Clubs will want at least 2 weeks to have a mini pre-season and then that makes 2 weeks to finish the season with 8 or 9 games. With contracts running out as well? Never going to happen.

  27. The only way this would be acceptable is if there is no relegation

Otherwise taking away home advantage is unfair - we have a decent-ish run in with 3-4 winnable home games, an advantage we would instantly lose

There will be plenty of players who will kick off a fuss and not want to spend weeks upon weeks in a hotel away from their families. Also, the whole thing would have to be scrapped if a few players picked up the corona during the competition. As much as I'd love to have a bit of football to watch, this season is done for.

Totally agree, but if you play out the season you'd never get them to agree to no relegation. It's that jeopardy that draws the crowds, or rather TV viewers in this scenario.

If you play 38 games, there will be no justification for not having relegation. If this World Cup style formula gets voted in, then it's tough, we'd have to abide to the rules. 14 clubs have to vote for it to make it happen.

Just look at the league table. 14 clubs are safe from relegation. 6 are battling it out. It's clear if they put this to the vote it would be agreed...IMO.

Well they won't be allowed to play any games if the self distancing rules are still in place.

Or will it not matter for footballers?

They are pretty keen to finish the season though aren't they!

It will be ok for our defenders. They are always at least 2 meters away from the opposition.

All people who are sane, rational and have any intelligence will stay at home, only complete idiots would go to the ground or congregate in other places.

If you want to stop people going to the grounds, block all transmissions in the area so they have no idea what is happening.
